This thread has me searching for wharnies as I like them. I think I may get the Spydie Kiwi. Looks like a useful knife.

Hey, yeah I read through that thread a few days ago and it was really interesting. Wasn't able to figure out who Warren Thomas is though. I don't doubt what the folks here on BF are saying, it just all seems really conjectured? Not that I know any better......
Warren Thomas is a knifemaker, who has also done a lot of collaborations with other companies. It's not conjecture the issues he has with QM. He's posted the issues on his Facebook page.

Warren Thomas Knives does not approve any reproduction of it's designs by Quartermaster Knives.
There was a limited arrangement under Mantis Knives with Jared West with the friction folder and coin knife, ANY and ALL other copied designs are NOT approved by WT. Thank you.

Go to Google Images and type in "Wharncliffe folder".

AVD Butcher is pretty B.A.

You could always get a tanto of your favorite flavor then grind it back to a wharie.. Send it to a good pimper or if you are handy, DIY.

Here is a CS Recon 1 tanto ground back..

Yeah, my buddy has a Tuff Lite. Looks like a capable tool, I just hate the feel of CS's smooth Griv-Ex on the handles. Feels so chintzy, even though I know it's tough stuff.

This one probably wouldn't be a good choice for you DF, since you're not into plasticy handles and aggressive profiles, but I thought I'd throw it out there for others who might like the looks of it. It can be had for around $100ish: 154CM steel, linerless FRN handles.

I have been looking for wharncliffe blade some time ago.
My final selection was:
Benchmade griptilian
ZT0770
CRK Insingo

Finally I am still wait to make up my mind between ZTS and CRK...
I like the insingo a lot... But it doesn't come for cheap...

As mentioned before, the ZT0770 (I have the CF version, or had before it ran away from home). The forthcoming ZT0808 is another promising wharncliffe style blade.

I've just picked up a small micarta insiglo Sebenza.
Lovely little knife.
I'd try to pick one up used. If you don't like it, you can easily move it on and get your money back.

Re grinding a tanto is a great idea!!! I make knives, so something I'm well set up to do. Thanks

Yeah. I decided to get a 550HG from benchmade now and save up for a small Insingo. Definitely what I want, and will get one eventually!

I know it's not a pricey kind of thing, and it's a liner lock, but I've been carrying a CRKT Swindle for a few months now, and its been way better than I expected. It's a little sway-backed looking, but surprisingly, that works. Not knowing any better, I'd call it a sort of gently swept Wharnecliff... It is also an assisted opening kind of thing and is just too easy to operate.
I'm not terribly fond of the clip design, but it's workable..especially for about $35..

I'm a fan of Wharncliffes and have owned many.

The Tuff-Lite represents the best value. The ergonomics are beyond comparison - every time I used it, it felt like an extension of my hand. I often would continue to do work with it open in my hand just because of how natural it felt - never made an accidental cut with it.

The Hogue EX-04 is a heck of a knife. Custom-like fit and finish, with perfect pivot action and lockup. My only gripe is that it is certainly a TACTICAL knife. The curve of the blade and the teensy thin little blade tip made it unsuitable for hard-use or utility tasks. DOn't get me wrong, it'll cut stuff really damned well - but, that tip will be the first thing to go.

If you can get one for cheap, the CRKT Eraser is a fantastic sheepsfoot blade. Great flipping action and a nice forward-curved tip that won't snap off. (My picture! Custom scales, though.)

I onwed and carried a CF-inlay large Insingo Sebenza for a while, and it was really quite nice. I only sold it because I worried too much about losing it to enjoy carrying it. (My picture!)

The Yojimbo has the same tip issues as the Hogue. Still, an amazing knife.

The Boker Plus Nopal is a good option if you want a Tuff Lite but don't want a lockback. I've never carried or used one, but Boker is reasonably decent quality so I feel safe recommending it.

A Kershaw TiLT is basically the grail wharncliffe utility knife. I've had two in my hands and could never bring myself to damage such a rare item, but I know that someone without that inhibition would have one of the best utility knives ever designed.

The CRKT Edgie HA HA HA JUST KIDDING WHAT GARBAGE

Anyway, the Sog Access Card 2.0 is a nice little VG-10 wharncliffe knife that gets basically no attention because it's SOG.

The Boker Plus Mini Vanquish, now for a limited time in CF and VG10 (normally G10 / 440c), is an exceptionally good option as well.

The Kizer Ki405 is hard to beat as well. S35VN Titanium linerlock flipper for $100. Seriously. $100.

The Benchmade 555HG is a wonderful knife, and is worlds better with a custom grip. Seriously, that hollow handle ruins everything for me.

The Benchmade Triage knives can be found in a plain-edge with a wonderful sheepsfoot blade.

Spyderco's now-long-discontinued Rock Lobster would be a contender if it wasn't basically a collector's piece at this point.

Don't neglect the Nilte Quiete, though - it's worth looking into.

The Spyderco Southard, Kershaw Needs Work, Kershaw Echelon, and Kershaw Junkyard Dog are all very good options that I'm too tired of working on this post to type out descriptions and find pictures.
