Suits and Knives

I recently purchased a William Henry EDC E6-4. I live in California (LaLa land to be precise) and the last thing I want to do is advertise to anyone that I'm carrying a knife. So the clip had to go. I sent it to the spa for a lanyard conversion. Then I got a 5" Sack-ups to protect the blade and put the rig in my front pocket. It's practically unnoticeable in there. The Sack-ups conforms to the blade, so it's not going to fall out. And I like the idea of carrying something classy like a William Henry. :)

I carry a Benchmade 941 in my pocket, it's light has a blade made out of s30v so it's very sharp. When I go out with my wife and I am wearing a suit I will carry several knives, emerson cqc-7 clipped under my belt, Benchmade 941 in my pants pocket, then you can also put one in your inside blazer pocket. Hope this helps

These may be too small, but here goes.
Either a Victorinox, or Wegner money clip. 3 blades, and very functional.Very thin profile, and smooth.
Another odd one that I carry is a California Knives auto. Very solid, and fun to play with.
I also agree that any small William Henry is a good choice

For some variety, what about a Marttiini MFK-W1?

8cm blade, liner lock, polished stainless handle, 22 degree grind and curly birch handle scales. It's classy, but it can be hard to find outside of Finland.

Go to your tailor. Have them stitch one of the front pockets to fit the slip joint of your choice. Find a nice thin Knife. I recommend something like this:

I wear a suit most days. I can't really have a pocket clip showing. The deep, loose, pockets in my suits are also relatively smooth and I've had some of my slicker-handled knives fall out when sitting down. My Buck Mayo TNT is about the right size and profile, but doesn't stay in my pocket very well. I prefer an FRN Spydie Native (which stays in) or a Victorinox Spartan (which doesn't cause problems if it falls out.) My Strider PT was pretty good about sticking around, too.

Looks strangely close to a Buck Alpha.

I wear a suit 6 days a week. Depending on where I am working that day, i.e. in office or out I use a couple different setups. I always carry my Benchmade 1100-1 Black and Blue Tactical pen. I have found that any knife that you can find a sheath that allows for a horizontal carry is great for the small of your back.

what about the benchmade nagara? looks like a nice classy knife, with seemingly smooth sides

Good recommendation, it`s what I carry when i have to suit up. It is always carried clipped regardless of what im wearing. I'm also looking at picking up a special William Henry as a celebration/present to myself.

When wearing my suits I go with one of the nicer Kershaw Leeks (I like the smoky blue and red ones for this) with the lock on in my inner jacket pocket or even the Kershaw Centofante (I got the black one with the mother of pearl inserts. A dress knife that is slim and easily concealable is generally the key.I know the risk of the holes though. I would cry if I had a knife make a hole in a $3000 suit. I am not sure I would pick anything with a rough surface like g10 handles and so on.

I don't wear a suit but do wear a lab coat every day at work along with a shirt and tie. My EDC's include: BM 440, BM 480, BM 530, Spyderco Ladybug, Spyderco Dragonfly. All are pretty light in the pocket.

If you want your suit coat to drape well I would not recommend a larger folder in a breast pocket, inside or out. One of the front side pockets might work ok for you, depending on the coat and your needs.

My work environment is business formal, so suits every day. Some people in my office wear knives with clips in their trouser pockets but not many do. I don't because I don't think it's appropriate. I carry a folder inside my right pocket. Either a traditional like a Mike Alsdorf, or recently a Burger EXK 1 with the clip removed.

I like the knives to ride vertical so they don't print. I can't stand wearing a suit and having a knife laying sideways in the pocket. Mike sells his knives with a great slip pouch that will not slide in the pocket. Highly useful.

I also have a larger knife in my bag that goes with me every day.

Good luck in your new job! Only you know what is appropriate for your environment but if you're wearing a suit remember you always need to look good; bulging pockets and clipped accessories likely do not serve you well. Be aware of your image and be sure you're projecting the image that will serve you best.

Boot Knife with "Bastion Walnut"
This is what I carry when I’m wearing a suit during my executive protection jobs.

Lot's of choices here. Off the top of my head, I'd go with any of the following.

  • William Henry (almost any of their line)
  • CRK Umfaam
  • Lone Wolf Paul knives
  • A traditional slipjoint, especially one in pearl. There are many very nice custom slipjoints offered by knifemakers here on BF.
  • Spyderco Kiwi
  • Benchmade Benchmite
  • A.G. Russell Spire
  • Benchmade Opportunist
  • Benchmade Shoki
  • Kershaw Squaw Creek (very nice little knife that is often overlooked)
  • CRKT Montana Gentleman's Knife
  • One of the smaller Moki gent's knives
