Initial impressions:

1. I was disappointed he wasn't explicit about his knife and multitool. From the sheath and the scene where he cut up a big metal jug, it looked like his fixed blade was a Buck 119; I also thought he used a SwissTool in that scene. However, I can't swear to either.

2. How many letters will he get about kicking those dogs?

3. Interesting that he "officially" used a "survival kit" for the first time... He has some neat stuff in that kit.

Buck 119, I thought it was a SOG tool, and he wasn't kicking them, he was breaking up a fight...that has to happen, I have owned a husky, they can be mean suckers. I liked the show...it was nice to see him say that he had his full kit, and that it included an axe and a saw. I thought it was a good show that again showed that he was human, and that the wilderness can be tough. Gene

Looked like a 119 to me as well. Good show. Also glad to see the human side and a survival kit utilized.

Anyone who whines has never tried to break up a fight between full sized dogs that haven't been inbred to the point of being slavish lumps of brainless meat. I invite them to try sometime.

I think it is unanimous, it was a 119, but I thought it was an older Wave. My one question was why was he farting about with the coffee can when he was packing his kit in a german mess kit?

I've also noticed he's added a Fox40 to his gear.

What kind of axe was he using is my question. I thought it might be Fiskars but they're orange on the bottom where his was an orangish on the top near the head.

Great show, I just love the far north. I think that Les might want to add a hunting advisor on the show he spent a lot of time tromping through the woods wasteing energy when he should have hunkered down and waited for game. He did get quite a look from the dog that he took his meat from, it has been my opinion from reading that those dogs don't spend much time processing there food. The dog fight broke up fairly easily , makes me think they were a fairly mild team. All in all it was a great show.

One of my fav eps. I liked that he used a fixed blade - Buck 119, as well. The multi-tool looked like the Leatherman Charge that he's been using in every ep this season so far.

You called that kicking? Perhaps you should try breaking up a dog fight by inserting your arm into the middle of it and see what happens.:)
Not only is it good way to break up a fight, but would you want to take a chance on being bitten on your wrist (veins) with help so far away?

Just to be clear, my comment about kicking the dogs used the sarcastic emoticon () because I don't think it was a big deal but I do think the same people who complain when Les harvests game will complain about this...

His survival kit looked like basic stuff that you can buy from Wal-mart, Coghlans brand. I'm not saying that Wal-mart is junk. I buy a lot of replacements for my survival kit from Wal-mart. I had just started watching Survivorman this season. The Buck 119 was a good choice. That was one of my first knives when I was 16. I used it for everything; skinning, gutting fish, you name it. The Buck 119 could easily stand up to a Kabar in my opinion. I have had both and I would still pick the Buck 119.

Well, a new look for Les. Survivorman is now generously equipped with hardware. Too bad he is not a gear buff.

The only thing he showed off was his storage modification on the 22LR stock. His interest in gear is for its ability to do the job. Can't knock that.

His main interests seem to revolve around technique and optimal mental outlook as the necessary tools for survival. A practical attitude. But us gear buffs are left to guess about his edged tools.

Les looked to be wearing a nylon Goretex parka (Arctyrx?). It would have crackled loudly as he hunted with his .22, alerting all nearby game. I agree that his chances of success would have increased by sitting still and letting the game come to him.

In the next episode in South Africa, the preview shows Les using his knife as a spearpoint. Maybe we will learn more then.

I haven't had a chance to see the episode yet since they aren't being aired in Canada yet. :grumpy: He might well have made his purchases at a Wal-Mart, but I'm guessing he went down to the local Canadian Tire for most of his purchases. So far all his gear all seems to be brands that they carry-Buck, Leatherman, Coghlans. Other than a couple low-end Gerbers and SAKs, that's pretty much all they carry. The Fox 40 whistle he probably got through Mountain Equipment Co-op. The multitool probably isn't a SOG, they aren't that widely available up here so he'd probably have to go out of his way just to find one.

Im almost certain it was some sort of leatherman probally a wave because in one scene you could see the one handed knotch thingys

I'm watching this episode now. (DVR on computer) I like that he is doing an episode where he is actually equipped. I think he has been reading our posts. I also think that the coffee can bit is a hat tip to Ron Hood and his legions.

As useful as it is to see "how to do it" if somebody is caught out with nothing, it is great that he emphasized preparation, and showed how to utilize the gear he brought.

Yes, and in addition he was wearing a nylon shell parka which crackles alot; An unfamiliar sound in the woods, sure to alert game. Here is, at least, on instance where Les misleads the viewing audience, even if unintentionally.

Aside from this one glaring error, it was another great episode.

I haven't watched it yet, but it could still be a Fiskars. I've seen them with black handles painted orange close to the head. I'm about to watch it now, so I can tell you in an hour for sure.

Just saw it. Definately not a Fiskars. I've seen axes identical to it, but can't remember where or who made them.

I too was glad to see him with some gear. I thought he said he put the kit together himself.

To me:

Best part was Les using his foot to break up the fighting dogs. I always thought of him as a tree hugger, and I expected him to try other ways first.

Worst part was Les pulling the firesteel out of the kit and using the edge of the knife to strike sparks. I still have nightmares.

What kind of axe was he using is my question.

The axe handle looked yellow to me -- yellow near the head and black at the bottom. I wonder if it was one of those yellow synthetic handles with the lower part wrapped in some kind of tape?
