Surviorman, Season 2, Ep 3: Labrador

Well, a new look for Les. Survivorman is now generously equipped with hardware. Too bad he is not a gear buff.

The only thing he showed off was his storage modification on the 22LR stock. His interest in gear is for its ability to do the job. Can't knock that.

His main interests seem to revolve around technique and optimal mental outlook as the necessary tools for survival. A practical attitude. But us gear buffs are left to guess about his edged tools.

Les looked to be wearing a nylon Goretex parka (Arctyrx?). It would have crackled loudly as he hunted with his .22, alerting all nearby game. I agree that his chances of success would have increased by sitting still and letting the game come to him.

In the next episode in South Africa, the preview shows Les using his knife as a spearpoint. Maybe we will learn more then.

Hes using a knock off Sly II in that one.

I was pretty disappointed with it. It seems a lot of footage that would normally have been cut out was left in after he lost half his time to the weather.

One of the things I think is cool about Les is that he does tend to use gear that the average person could and would reasonably have available.

Screencaps for the gear lovers:

Axe: (sorry about the artifacts, accidentally compressed to 70% quality and can't be bothered to retake the screenshot again). Also, it looks like he never took the barcode sticker off :D: No idea what it is though. Not my area of interest v:(v. The handle material is definitely yellow, not orange.

Rifle: Too fuzzy to tell, but assuming a stock rifle, the receiver and checkering pattern looks like a Marlin 900 series. Also could be a Winchester Wildcat.

Knife: Looks like a Buck 119 alright.

Head lamp: Don't really know, but as a lighting enthusiast don't really care :p. Princeton Tec Apex with the Luxeon III is still one of the best on the market.

Folding saw: Coghlan's Sierra Saw.

Multi-tool: distinctively a Leatherman clip point, and by the previous episodes this season, it's most likely a Charge TTi.

I'll look again but I recall a tape wrap on a wood handle.

Okay, looked again. . . not wood. Yellow and black -- is the black section polypropelene?

It just occurred to me -- this was the first time Les (or even Eddie) has been shown using a flashlight, isn't it?

Pretty much. This is the first time Les has shown up with any real gear at all, so that naturally follows...

If you want to know about dogs then read, "The Wilderness Life" by Rutstrum. He spent lots of time in Manitoba when The Hudson Bay Company was still arround.

Les had a DVD out at American Walmart. Has anyone found it at the Canadian Walmarts? None of the stores carry it in Nova Scotia.

I don't think that Les' knife is a Charge. I vote for a Leatherman Surge. I think that blade is too big to be from a Charge or a Wave. Of the three, I only have the Wave, so could some who has a Surge set the record straight?

I enjoy the show and I also try to guess what stuff he is using.

Isn't it weird though that it is still the skill and knowledge of the man and not the contents of his kit that make the difference?

I don't know...That looks just like the blade on my Charge TTi.

It would make sense that it would be a Charge, since that's what he's been using in every ep this season. But who knows, I could be wrong.(It's been know to happen):D

If he is who and what I think he is, you could outfit him with a very basic kit from the 1830's and he would do quite well. Or no kit at all but time and materials to make his own and he would make what he needed.

Codger

Did anybody notice Les making sparks with a ferro rod and the blade edge of his knife or was just drinking too much???

One of my favorite episodes also. I hope the dogs made it out OK, did they mention if they did? I mean, everyone else had to be air lifted out.

Yep. He did the same thing with a mag bar and an SAK last season.
