survival firearm??????????????

Do you guys carry these 'survival guns' everywhere/everytime you go when in the wilderness? Cause if you don't, how can you call them 'survival' guns? If not, what you do carry will more than likely be your survival gun. Like that J frame in your pocket.

In the case of preplanning for a primitive sustainment circumstance well my choices would be different.
On Foot: Ruger MK II 7.5" pak-lite, and a Lever 45-70 or maybe my lever 30/30, possibly a bolt .223/.308. haven't really deceided on the rifle yet.
If by vehicle: add whatever I can stuff in there.

Any idea's?

I carry my custom ruger 22/45 almost everywhere I go, it fits perfect in the bladder pocket of my camelback hawg, which is always over my shoulder. I have 50 rounds of minimag HPs and 50 rnds of solids and two mags in the front pocket. Chris

Runningboar again with pissing contest. I have personally known people to have gotten shot with .22 and the bullet INDEED bounced when it hit bone. If a person gets shot with a .22 in the arm that bullet WILL richochet and exit through the neck or somewhere else. ANd I know a person cannot believe everything they read but the Backwoodsman is a magazine that I feel has merit and a lot of useful and (hopefully) true information by people who have been there and done it. My reference is the Backwoodsman Volume 27 No.4 July/August 2006 article intitled "When Homesteading Was For Real".

A .22 caliber is potent enough to kill. Again I have read that some snipers for closer shots prefer a .22 less recoil etc. when doing close hits. Not is not to say that for every person to go out and shoot a moose in the head will indeed kill, granted there are factors to consider.

On another note I usually make it a note to say I have read "x" or I have did "x" so please do not feel the need to challenge me on every post I send. You have merit in what you say and do, as do I. I'm not blowing smoke up no one's arse to uplift my outdoorsman ego. We are all here to learn and share that being said I have read in a previous post you made stating that you can be an asshole...so I'll read that for what it is well. NO harm No foul.

Thanks double D I needed a chuckle tonight, shot in the arm and came out the neck, really?

Quit reading magazines and the internet and go shoot some animals, bullets do not bounce around inside of an animal, 22 or otherwise, they may change direction but even that is slight. A 22 is a piss poor big game round survival situation or any other situation, I never said it wouldn't kill a moose but if it does or did it is mostly luck IMO, fact, not assholishness, conjecture, or what I heard. Chris

Guys I have to respectfully decline on the issue regarding the .22 if shot in the head will just give a person a headache. Again, I have read on hunting sites, mags, various articles that people in the day have gotten their share of deer meat using a .22--where they a damn good shot probably, but to say that a .22 cannot do this is wrong. Heck there have been people killed by a richocheting .22. THis is not lie. I have a good friend a LT. in the Fire Dept. and he has told me of gang members who have gotten into shoot outs with small mini like .22 semi auto's and have died.

I am offering up what I can on a simple computer forum as so a person can get a variety of views and perspectives. This is why I value the forums to get insight, perceptions, ideas and other people's experiences. SO if a person reads on a forum from said forum member they should or should not take it as truth??? I would hope we are all telling the truth about our experiences. I do not mean to get anyone rilled up and maybe I'm a little passionte about this .22 biz when I have known personaly close people to me who have died with this round.

I agree .22 poor round choice for everyday hunting, but in a pinch with the stars lined up right it would work. I have never shot a deer with a .22 but have shot rabbit and squirrel. But to say a .22 or other round would not richochet is ridiculous. Good advise quit reading... I'm sure everyone on this forum as well as yourself follow that advise.

Snipers no, assissans yes, large difference between the two. Making a shot at range, and sticking the barrel to the back of someones head makes a big difference in performance and lethality. I did not mean to start a pissing match, or is that what you say when anyone disagrees with your armchair ideas and theories.

BTW, who the hell said the 22 wouldn't kill, it certainly was not me, as a matter of fact it kills all out of proportion to it's size, but let's not forget reality, it is not a moose round, and it does not enter your arm and exit your neck. Chris

Points taken Chris. Challenging an idea is fine, having dialouge and sharing experiences is fine. But for goodness sakes there is a way to be respectfull in doing so without the sny remaks as to call into question the experiences and knowledge of others. Like I have said before a person is indeed privilaged in this day and age where they are able to hunt and have had someone teach them how to instead of maybe researching on respectable forums as this and a few others on various outdoors subjects. And like I have concured with you from the begining a .22 not a mooseround, but it could and has done the job.
I may have flew off the handle a little in regards to my remarks--I apologize to anyone and to you Chirs for stating what I did.

The .270W is better than the .30-06... or is it the other way around? I forget. 9mm vs. .45 ACP- even Uncle Sam can't end the debate. Whichever arm (and type of ammo!) a person has on them has limitations for survival use. It's a matter of understanding those limitations and adapting to them.:)ss.

Quiet Mike===>
That is my 1st gun!!!
I bought my Ruger 10/22 when I was 16 yrs old
I worked at a place called BEST Catalog...I had a 20% employee discount
It cost me $79.00 bucks...I bought it with my 1st ever tax returns to boot!!!
I think i bought the Butler Creek 30 rd mags for 6.99
I think I bought the Butler Creek folding stock a few years later for like 39 bucks
Those were the days
(and yeah I still got it..right next to my other Butler Creek stocked rifles)

I always recommend the 10/22 to any one who wants an all around camping gun
I won't kill too many bears but you can sure tear up a lot of tin cans for cheap
Maybe if you unloaded 30 Winchester Wildcat XL High Velocity Hollw Points into a bear it might slow him down
Depends how hungry the bear is I guess......

That's not what I said. I said: "If the angle is wrong, it'll skid/bounce off the skull causing a headache for the recipient, nothing more." There are cases of the bullet hitting the skull at such an angle as the bullet bounces off the skull or at least one case where it went under the skin around the skull, exiting the skin on the other side. Result? One serious headache !

CAN a .22 down a deer or a moose ? Absolutely......but it takes surgical precision, something not easily found afield.

How, exactly, is it "custom?"

Sounds interesting.

.

Trigger job and a Tactical Solutions upper that I had a combination adjustable sight/weaver rail installed. Maybe stretching "custom", besides the trigger job and drilling and tapping it is pretty much bolt on, but it sure as hell ain't stock. My largebores are true customs built by Jim Stroh at Alpha Precision, I am afraid I am one of those people that can't leave anything alone. :o Chris

I think that this is one the most reasonable survival arms made. It would be my choice if I didn't worry about cats, black bears, and 2 leggers. I have a MK II with a 7.5" pac-lite, and it is a definate game getter. I think that if it is ALL one had it would be a certain layer of defense against all manner of predator. Because of the light ammo, I think that it would be a great tool to sustain one in a survival situation.

Although, I know that a violent encounter is low on the probability list, I like the versitility of .357, and definately the long rang capability. When backpacking I carry my wheelgun and a speedloader with .357's. Usually a half box of .38 wad cutters thrown in also (Low recoil, Much less noise)
