Survival Gun of last resort.

When you get rain you do!:D

We got a little this last month... Lake Hartwell is done for though I'm afraid. There is supposed to be a little town under that lake when they filled it in... I wanna go exploring to see if there is anything left now that it's down.

Steel-Junky
Very fine shooting. I shoot a stack barrel 22 with 1 inch barrels and find it extremely hard to hit with it at more than 10 feet. I need lot more practice with it. I still drop it my pocket for some wood walks. It is better than nothing.

I bought one of these once. It was the 22lr/22mag conversion set. It was well made, and pretty cool...

...until I shot it a few times. It's the most INACCURATE thing I've ever shot; that includes throwing a stick at something blindfolded. The 22mag was crazy. It burnt my hand every time I fired it, and kicked like a mule.

It's a cool little hand gun, but has only one real purpose, to be shoved into someone's gut and fired repeatedly.

For a survival gun, I have two options that I would choose:

S&W 686+ w/ 4-6" barrel
S&W 22A w/ 4-6" barrel

I'm not tooting S&W's horn, but have owned both of these, and they're well made, easy to clean and maintain in the field, and above all, super accurate w/ just the iron sights.

Well keep in mind I was sitting at a bench with my hands resting on a padded block... I didn't hit that pack free hand LOL. But since my 22 has the folding handle... I can get a good grip on it and double fist it. And I think the trigger on mine is better than most. It's not hard to pull at all and break cleanly and evenly... I think I got a good one.

Perhaps I got a good one but they're really not incapable of some accuracy though... They are hard to shoot well and don't lend themselves to traditional shooting styles... but they can hit somewhat.

I agree with wulfshrunting. As a self-defence gun of absolute last resort, the little .22 has a place, but as a survival gun of last resort it leaves a lot to be desired.

For a survival gun, I have two options that I would choose:

S&W 686+ w/ 4-6" barrel
S&W 22A w/ 4-6" barrel

I have a 4" 686 myself, and as a survival side arm I would not feel at all distressed to have only that gun. For the minimum gun I would consider for survival purposes, I would choose a S&W J-framed .22 or similar gun from another maker.

I think it boils down to three things; ease of carry, power and preference. I thought long and hard about a "trail gun" - one that would allow me to defend myself against two and four legged critters, allow me to harvest food and allow me to easily carry it whenever I needed to. I thought that the .22 was a good answer - there were many choices for delivery systems and though it lacked "stopping power" I could carry a bunch of it. Then I considered the 9mm/38/357 - good guns, good cartidges and good power. I gave thought to the 44/45 calibers for about a minute until I realized I wasn't man enough to pack one of these all day. My choice?

A Glock 19. Lots of good powered rounds in a delivery system you can't kill. It will take medium game but I decided that wasn't my primary need for a portable weapon in the woods; feral animals and people are a far bigger threat just like in the big city. Bears? Big cats? Every one I've ever seen has been running away from me and I maintain a high situational awareness. I figured that 15 rounds of 9mm +P would discourage most predators, if not I was probably meant to be their meal. Plus this is the gun I carry every day everywhere so I am intimately familiar with it.

As Fred Dryer's chacter Hunter used to say: "Works for me!" YMMV

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a survival gun? After all you aren't going to have a bench or rest when you have to shoot at game.

Not really you can fire while lying down and rest your arm on a log or something... Most of the time when shooting at game people rest on something.
