Survival Gun of last resort.

"I have been in combat situations, if you think you can draw that little pistol and put one in a bad guys brain pan, when at the same time, he is trying to do you serious bodily harm, I suggest you rethink your ideas."

Had to smile when I read this. Let me tell you a little story. A friend of mine was jumped by 3 bad guys in the driveway of his home. Forced into his house where his family was. Here the three armed bad guys DISARMED my friend, relieving him of his holstered Colt 1911 in 45ACP. They wanted money. He played along, reaching into his pocket and retrieving his NAA 22 Magnum. He moved and shot bad guy number 1 directly in the face - DEAD RIGHT THERE - and fired another round into bad guy 2. Bad guys 2 and 3 fled out of the house as my friend grabbed his 1911 that bad guy 1 dropped as he was shot.

Survival?

That's a really cool story

I also know a story about a man that killed a grizzly bear with a 410 shotgun and birdshot and another about a friend of a friend that killed a moose with a 22 short. Chris

Killing people, even in self-defense does not make for a "cool story", runningboar. He did what he needed to do to protect his family and himself. I suspect if you asked him about how "cool" he felt about having to do that he'd tell you not at all.

Sorry but I disagree, some people deserve to die, sounds like the guy in this story might fit the bill. If you come into a man's home to steal or do him or his family harm, a 22 in the eye is what you should get, better yet, a full load out of a 12 bore. I love a story where the good guy wins. Chris

I don't think runningboar is being especially bloodthirsty; I think he was just expressing his satisfaction about a good man defending himself and his loved ones successfully from unprovoked aggression.

Well, I have to admit, I have never killed anyone, but killing someone else rather than have them rape my daughter or kill my wife is much "Cooler" than having my family violated by some maggot.

I guess it is all relative.

If you have some demons in your past that haunt you, I'm sorry, but very bad people deserve to die and I have no compassion for them.

I sincerely hope I never have to do it, but I have no problem with it if the moment arrives.

 +1

My dad was the victim of a home invasion at the tender age of 67. He was beaten with a tire tool and left for dead in the driveway. He suffered four skull fractures and the left side of his skull was crushed, he was in ICU for 2 weeks. 3 years later and sometimes he still has trouble talking and is unsteady walking. My dad has no enemies, he has been retired for about 7 years and about all he does is work in his flower beds. The guy stole some prescription drugs and about 40 dollars out of my dads billfold.

I wish I could put a double deuce in the guys eye that did that to him. Chris

If you have no regrets over taking another life for whatever reasons you will as you grow older or you're a sociopath. I see you list your career as army. I was a cop. I have regrets 30 years later. Maybe you will too as you grow up.

Spent my time with a shrink, my son calls it my angry time.

Still take medication for what is called stress disorders, I fight my demons you fight yours. I still have no regrets. Chris

Ok... went to range today. And in 13 shots... I hit a cigarrette pack at about 25 to 30 yards with the mini 22mag twice. Not an every shot kind of thing but I can definitely hit something standing still at that range. I'm sure those who believe it's not possible will cry BS and those that aren't sure will assume whatever... but there it is. I got some pics... But then again those are easy to fake as well so I don't expect anyone to put any stock in it. I'll post them up later.

We're almost into W&C, sigh.

Look, there will always be arguments about having enough power to kill humans. For every story you find where it took half a dozen large caliber pistol rounds to drop a crazed dude, you will find a couple about one shot .22 kills. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I've never shot anyone with a pistol, I've killed animals with them. *I* personally don't feel naked with a 9 shot .22LR, and I'll tell people that. Whether you can feel at all comfortable with it is up to you.

What gets me is when people insist that there is now way anything short of a .357, .45, 9mm, whatever their personal preference is, can be possibly good enough. There's a perception of an incredible defensiveness in the big gun crowd. Sure, there is a benefit to the power, but it's made out like there's a law of nature that states that if you carry a .22, YOU will get killed and your attacker will gain magical powers when you shoot him. This isn't generally borne out by the results.

Saying that a .22 is unusable is unjustifiable. Saying that a inch barrel .22 as a survival gun isn't going to work is fine by me. It's an up close and personal SD gun. I've stated several preferences, and as a WILDERNESS AND SURVIVAL gun of last resort with maximum concealability, in a pistol, I think the .22 will win out. But only because there isn't a 50 grain 7mm LR cheap rimfire round out there. (Hell, I'd even got for a .25 long except that it'd be a nightmare for revolvers.)

IMO, that's not good enough for hunting. But I'll bet you could have quadrupled that with the minimaster or widow barrel. I also think that in anything under a nice long barrel, you are better off with a long rifle than a magnum. There are some LR subsonics out there with 60 grain lead that have a smaller powder charge that should burn much more completely, but I haven't gotten a chrony out to compare them.

If defending your life and sleeping well after that is the criteria, sign me up for that "Sociopath" list.

Will it affect you? Yes. Should it make you disfunctional? Uhhhh...NO!

You have to remember, people deal with stress differently. It has nothing to do with being a "Tough Guy".

No doubt... I was just addressing that fact that some think it can't be done. Again... again... and again... I'm not saying that in any normal situation would I pack only this mini revolver. That would be stupid. But... it's not as incapable as some think.
