Survival kit food??

Anybody have favs. regarding food choices that they use in their survival kits? Being a former Marine, I am partial to a case or two of MRE's, but geez, they sure have gone up in prices since I got out (2000). I used to be hard pressed to sell cases to surplus stores for 45 bucks, but now the going rate is $60 and up, not even including shipping!!! :eek: :mad:

Other choices?? I know about Backpackers Pantry, Natural High etc. but honestly, I am a cheap bastard, and 5 bucks per meal is about the max I wanna spend for something that I'll probably just end up eating while backpacking (before the expiration date ;)) which means the end of the world hasn't happened yet.....:D
 
For my suppers I use backpacking dehydrated ones, I do end up using them for backpacking and then rotate new ones into the kits- works pretty good as none go to waste. Taste wise you'd be pretty hard pressed to beat them- they've gotten much better in the last 5-10 years, some of them borderline gourmet (Cajun, Tai, etc) :)

I split the two person meals in half, costs comes out to pretty close to $5 a pop.

There are a lot of guys who have invested in dehydrators and they make their own meals up- they get to choose their own ingredients, spice them to their liking, etc- I've thought about it, but it's so easy to order them online and such a wide variety I haven't
 
I take it Power Bars and ramen noodles are out of the question :P $1.50 well spent!
 
Usually for me it's tins of smoked oysters or clams....sometimes sardines. The cans are nice and flat and store easily and they are a good source of protien. The large tubes from heavy duty masonry drill bits make good containers to store crackers in. I do keep several of the flavor packets from ramen around...great for making warm broth drinks to knock the chill off.
 
probar,ramen,boullion and moose goo....right now im onlying carrying a probar and boullion in my kit.

i also agree with sasha on the salami,cheese,crackers combo...easy to keep and no cooking necessary! high in fat and carbs.tastes good to boot

Yeah...I forgot to mention the summer sausage, it is a favorite....cheese is allways a fav no matter where or when, but I don't like packing it in the warm months here unless it's the stuff in the tins.
 
Sardines. Peanut butter. Not high class grub, but they provide fat/protein and will keep you alive.
 
For survival kits, I use Datrex or Mainstay lifeboat bars. They are the only things that will survive the summer heat here for any period of time.
 
Mountain House Pro Paks. 500-700 cals apiece, small, light, and you can feed two, or feed yourself twice. Sardines, kipper snacks, summer sausage, homemade beef jerky, trail mix, cliff bars, and MREs. I strip down the MREs to minimal packaging, and what I will use. Check out all the ethnic food stores. They offer a huge variety of dried foods, canned goods, and spices that are not available in normal stores. I also get my butane cannisters there for less $ than anyplace else. Dried squid is mighty tasty. A nice big container of Kimchi is better than Viagra.
 
I pack several types of dehydrated or add water and eggs kinds of meal stuff from the grocery store, $3 or less. I smoke my own meat to take, pack eggs, sardines, tortillias and the like.
 
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I'm not sure of the nutritional value, but with enough of them I can survive anything.
 
On the RC forum there was a thread about Quinoa as a great survival food. I am looking forward to trying it -never even eaten it before.

I dont know what kind of "kit" you would put it in though. -Probably the same kit you would find ramen noodles in.

i eat quinoa on the regular...its a super food. ive found quinoa with beans wrapped in a tortilla with some tapatio is heaven. also its great with fish...you really should try some...way healthier than rice.
