Survival kit food??

Hoopster.

Ask and ye shall recieve.

Mix 3 cups creamy peanut butter, 2 cups honey or powdered sugar, and 2 cups milk powder ( I like the milk powder from Bob's Red Mill more than the others it is finer and doesn't have the binders in it). You can add soy protein powder as well.

All measurements are approximate. If the mixed product seems too gooey add some dry ingredient. If it is too dry and stiff add some more honey or peanut butter.

It ain't rocket science...Thank God.
Made some yesterday. I was surprised that the mixture was not sticky and came out of the mixing bowl no problem. I just put a few large spoonfuls each in some ziploc bags and tossed them in the refrigerator. I wonder if this stuff needs to be kept refrigerated or not? Tastes good almost like peanut butter fudge.

I vaccuum pack mine. Never have refrigeradted it. I have kept it over 6 months without any problems whatsoever.

The stuff packs the weight on kids who are 3/4 dead from famine in Africa in record time.

Only eat a little at a time (which is difficult cause it is damn good) Otherwise it;ll pack weight on you too.

I was just thinking that a head of Garlic would be nice to take on a trip. It is really good for you, and it can flavor any woods stew.

I think it has good antibacterial properties as well as nutritional value.

I think of a survival kit as a 24-72 hr thing. I don't take food unless I'm packing a lunch. I do keep a couple bags of tea for psychological benefit but I store a variety of foodstuffs at home in case of natural or other disasters or shortages.

Food is not my concern on day hikes, water is. If I think i'm going to be out for a couple days I like beef jerky and candy bars.

August West,

Heinz produces Spotted Dick Pudding in a 285 gr. can (got two cans in the cupboard right now). It seems a bit more like a heavy, dense raisin bread than what Americans usually think of as pudding.

Is that like an english style Christmas pudding? Me mum (my english mom) makes it every Xmas -and lights it on fire with rum or whisky.

A couple of Snickers, and an instant soup or two. Snickers is particulary nice at winters, when it freezes solid. One candy bar can last an hour :)

I used to carry some jerky too, but it has too much salt in it to be "survival" food.

The Government,

Yes, Spotted Dick Pudding is very English. Funny note: I read that a few years ago they tried to make the name a little more politically correct sounding by calling it "Spotted Richard". The new product didn't sell well so they changed the name back to the traditional one.

zombie_killer,

As I understand the term, "Summer Sausage" is often used to refer to any sausage that can be stored without the need for refrigeration. It varies quite a bit between different producers.

I also made a batch this evening. My wife looked at me like I was crazy, and asked me if I had any starving children. (We were at Wallyworld when I bought the ingredients, and she asked why.)

I made only a small batch to start, using about a cup of peanutbutter, 3/4 cup of honey, and about a cup of dry milk. Once mixed, I also added some Ovaltine (chocolatey taste, loaded with vitamins) and some dry oatmeal. It came out resembling a batch of no-bake cookies, which I love!

I cut it into 4 portions, and placed them into ziplock bags, then stuck them into the fridge.

Thanks for sharing this great info with us!

Everyone thought I was crazy also but all who taste it like it. I was wondering about adding oatmeal also because the mixture does lack fiber. Any tips on how much oatmeal to add?

I've added sesame seeds to mine and minced almonds too. I'm going to try coconut flakes next time. I think almost anything goes with this stuff.

I roll my plumpy'nut into logs between some waxed paper and then freeze it. One could fill an ice cube tray or mini cupcake tin with the mixture and freeze to make small, ready-to-go portions too.

Good snack for the gym.
