Hello all,

I'm starting to create a "Bug out Bag" and I'm in need of a quality knife.
I've read a couple of articles that recommend the SOG Seal Pup M37, or PUP Elite. The larger version (Seal 2000 or Team Member) was also recommended.

Before I make my decision on the SOG knife, are there any other brands including models, that I should consider which have a similar quality
and price range of the SOG Seal knives? ($55.00 to $85.00)

I'm a definite newbie to knives and would appreciate any knowledge from the experienced members of this forum.

Thank you.

There are plenty of options that are better than SOG in the same price ranges. RAT (either Ontario or R.A.T.), Becker, BRKT, etc etc...tons of options, its really in what you want to spend.

Personally I have a Kershaw Outcast and a Cold Steel Folding Bushman on/in my BOB. Neither are pricy, both are very very tough.

You will find alot of information in the Wilderness Survival and Skills sub-forum.

I keep a USMC Ka-Bar in mine. It's well used but since it is in a BoB that will be sitting, I didn't want to spend on anything new that was going to sit around. I also keep a Mora 510 in there for small stuff.

Had a couple of SOG Seal Pups/Elites but the tips are pretty fragile if you need to poke anything.

I'm sure you'll get lot's of nods for RAT's, Rangers, SRK's and Fallknivens.

Check the Buy/sell/trade sub forums here. Lots of good deals to be had.

A Cold Steel "Master Hunter" would be hard to beat for that application.

An Ontario RAT 7 D-2 is also excellent.

I don't now about you but I don't want a brick in my BOB. There is nothing in the world wrong with the SOG Field Pup for about 40.00. Sturdy and lightweight.

I have several BOB's and I keep a Mora stainless steel knife. The kit goes for long periods of time without use, It's cheap to put a Mora in each of them and they have worked very well for me.

+1 on the Mora - throw a $12 knife in a bag and you have it when you need it. If you never need it then all you have done is wasted $12 on a knife that never got used - what a crying shame! I would sharpen, clean & oil (mineral oil - better foodsafe than not) the knife before putting it in the bag - better to have a sharp knife that can be used for whatever you need.

The Outcast and the Pocket Bushman are both excellent choices, IMO. I would also give a Mora some consideration, as there are few knives that surpass it in it's price range.

I don't want a brick in my BOB either.

I like the Fallkniven F1. It's an incredibly solid knife and a great size IMO (3-3/4" blade of laminated VG-10 stainless.)
Also, its Zytel sheath won't dry out or rot.

If I wanted something a bit larger, I'd just go with a Fallkniven S1 instead.
(5" blade of the same steel.)

A mora and a machete might make a nice combo depending on your area.

If the machete is too large and the Mora is too weak I would second RAT cutler products. I have an RC-3 and it is a stout little blade. The RC-6 might be something to look into.

That sounds like a useful combo - should be able to buy them for under $20 too. At that price you could have that combo at home and also in the car (or in each car if you have more than one).

Ditto on these posts! I keep a Mora and a Vic Huntsman in all of my BOB's.

I keep a Fallkniven F1 on my BOB. Don't even know it's there and it does everything I need my knife to do.

wow cool project, take a look at the Becker companion, it is indestructable and is about 60 bucks. in that price frame it cant be beat this is not a fighter but an excellent blade if i needed to pick just one if the end of the world was happening

Fallkniven S1 & a folding saw.

I agree with this suggestion. If you want an SOG product I think some better all around choices are the field pup or the team leader. I had a Seal 2000 and didn't care for it for a number of reasons.

I asked the same question about a week ago. I was looking at the Sog Seal pup vs. Cold Steel SRK. I ended up deciding on the Seal Pup Elite, due to being a better slicer, lighter, and just the right size.
