Survival knife for bug out bag

i had to make this exact decision. RC-4 vs FK S1.

one is made from 1095 high carbon steel (the RC-4), the other is made from laminated stainless/VG-10 (S1).

personally i'm getting an S1. the order will go in later this week.

What were the reasons you based your decision on the S1?

I'd have to agree with the suggestion of a RAT or Becker knife. I personally have a Breeden PeaceMaker & a ZT 0500 Mudd in my BOB, along with extra mags for my handgun, extra disposable ear-plug, some ammo, multi-tool, etc.

mostly design and materials then price.

i think the S1 looks a lot nicer than the RATs and at US$100 for an S1 blank, it's ~$25+ cheaper than an RC-4.

I don't want a brick in my BOB either.

I like the Fallkniven F1. It's an incredibly solid knife and a great size IMO (3-3/4" blade of laminated VG-10 stainless.)
Also, its Zytel sheath won't dry out or rot.

If I wanted something a bit larger, I'd just go with a Fallkniven S1 instead.
(5" blade of the same steel.)

I think I'm leaning towards the S1. I already picked up a Mora #731 (1095 carbon steel) and I'm ready to order the Mora #761 (serrated blade, Sandvik 12c27) and #946 (Sandvik 12c27).

SOG makes sissy knives. Get yourself a RAT Cutlery knife AKA ESEE knife. The cheapest I've seen an RC-3 go for is 65.00. Or, you could get an RC-4 for around $80.00 if you look good enough.
