Survival knife for bug out bag

Becker BK2 Companion, fairly inexpensive, and has good tank like qualities. The Rat RC5 has all the qualities of the BK2,a bit better in terms of fit and finish, with a bit steeper price tag.You can't go wrong with either,it all depends on what you are willing to spend.

Does the Becker BK2 come in a combo edge or just a plain edge? I've Been checking online and can only seem to find the plain edge. I think I would prefer the partial serrated blade so is there another model similar to the BK2 that has the combo edge?

Thanks.

($55.00 to $85.00)

In this price range Beckers are definitely the best IMO. Bk2, BK7, or BK9 depending on what size you want, all are tough as nails. Some people have been talking about Fallknivens and Rat RC5, but those knives cost $125+, not the price range he was asking.

No it only comes with a plain edge. Plain edge in my opinion is much better than combo edge for outdoors work.

Wow, some folks are carrying real big knives in their BOB's.

Well it's not EDC, it's for a bug-out bag, this is what you might need in an emergency so bad that you are bugging out, maybe into the bush, that kinda pushes the envelope for size and weight. Hopefully no one is actually "carrying" the BOB or the knife in it much. But if I have to bug out I assume circumstances might just call for a substantial hunk of steel.

Personally I wonder what "articles" the original poster read that seemed to range only between the SOG this or the SOG that. Their products are OK but I've never thought they were the best, for a BOB or other purpose, either in pure performance or bang for the buck.

I would have more than one knife, however, one would definitely be a Rat Cutlery HEST....Must have in BOB!!!!!

Try a CS fixed blade bushman, costs about $20, and a Swiss Army knife or multitool. The fixed blade is sharp and thin, will sharpen easily because it is not too hard. Alonmg the lines of the Mora, you could also check out Martinni of Finland for stainless knives in either wood or rubber handles. I have been tempted to get a Condor Rodan knife in carbon steel (wipe it down with lubricant, I have heard mineral oil works well), or a machete.

+1 on the comments for a Mora and a SAK with a saw. If you could throw a light machete in there, you're golden for just about anything.

I'd suggest you do not skimp on the knife. It is your second most valuable tool for survival. The brain is first.

So far I'm leaning towards the RAT 7. Is there any mentioned problems with purchasing fake RAT knives on Ebay? I'm just wondering if its safe to purchase from there.

Thanks.

Stainless steel MORA knife. Or better two - somebody who might be with you might need one too.

Agreed. A small, tough knife like the HEST would be perfect because you can carry it concealed. You might not want to have a huge knife on your belt.

There are quite a few suggestions for the Mora. Can you please suggest which model?

Thanks.

While some prefer Stainless, I like carbon and keep a carbon Clipper (840 MG) in my day-hiking bag. They also make the Clipper in stainless.

There is also a "favorite Mora poll" in the wilderness & survival skills forum. The clipper is doing quite well in that thread, by members who even actually use their knives outdoors.;)

I use my Mora knives indoors & outdoors, for food prep & for cutting paracord & carving wood and whatever else I need a knife that size for. I don't chop or baton (I have bigger heavier knives for that sort of thing) but the Mora is good for pretty much everything else. Great utility knife, great price, great utility tool to have in anyone's bug out bag!

Get a Rat Cutlery RC-6, better overall quality and one of the best warranties out there.

You might also want to check out a Glock field Knife.
