Survival knife for bug out bag

You are going to have to sharpen any knife you get, sooner or later. When serrations get real dull they are a royal pain to sharpen,in my opinion.

Becker BK-2 an AWESOME knife for 60$ and also the best heat treat of 1095 by far
Ka-bar knows how to do it, and after this many years of being millitary issue Ka-bar has proven its 1095 over and over.

The Becker knives are not made out of 1095, they are made out of 1095 Cro-Van.

1095Cro-Van - Western Chrome-Vanadium - Case CV - 50100B - Carbon V - and 0170-6 are all the Same Steel.

:)

Cold Steel SRK or Recon Tanto would be excellent choices, both light weight with good blade length.

Can you please expain the differences and pros and cons of 1095 compared to 1095 Cro-Van?

I kinda thought 1095 Cro-Van was just like 1095 except for added chromium and vanadium which would make it a better choice considering the positive attributes of the added elements.

This is definitely a learning process.

Thanks.

I'm with ToddA. Give a small hatchet a try. Much more versatile for wood gathering and fuzz creating. Also if your BO includes the taking of small game, the hatchet is superb. If you find yourself being hunted by a four footed type, the hatchet will give you a chance for a get away. A hatchet and a knife of your choice would be the what I carry in mine.

I already have an 18" Gerber camp axe ready to purchase in my Amazon "shopping cart". I'm just deciding if I should get the smaller version which is a 9" camp hatchet instead.

In my experience, whatever you get you will always feel there is something better out there. My advice is to get something and learn how to use it.

Depends on how much room you have in your bag.

I have 30",19",13", and 10" axes/hatchets.

My 19" is my favorite "all rounder" and sees a lot of use around the house, and car camping. But if I haul one around it is my tiny 10". It fits in my bag, I am not tempted to leave it at home. However it is not as efficient as a larger axe/hatchet in processing firewood.

 I can't even believe I'm posting to this!

For a bug out bag that you will probably never have to use I'd get a sak and a mora (2000 for humid/salt or a triflex for all other areas).

Just have to ask, WTF is up with all the big knives in the reccomendation boxes? Planning on going rambo and slicing and dicing your way through zombies in stealth mode

1095 is bacically Iron and 1% Carbon.

A great solid knife steel.

Performance will totally depend on heat treat and geometry.

1095 Cro-Van is 1095 with a little chromium added for better hardening - A little moly for edge strength and a little more edge holding - A little nickel for some added toughness and a little vanadium for better bonding.

Not quite. Carbon V/0170-6B were proprietary steels developed for, and by Camillus. 1095 Cro-Van is a different steel, as attested to by Ethan Becker of Becker knives.

I keep my most expensive in my BOB because I know if I have to use it, I would expect them to be gone when I get back

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but can someone tell me what a Bug Out Bag is?
Thanks.

When the s**t hits the fan and you need to get out in a hurry (AKA Bug Out) you grab your 'get the hell out of here' bag (Bug Out Bag) which you have carefully pre-stocked with a bunch of useful tools and supplies in preparation for such an event.

You would normally have emergency equipment like a first aid kit (FAK), a good knife or 2, one or more flashlights & spare batteries, water, emergency blanket, paracord, a lighter or 2 & a firesteel & tinder, camp stove, some food, etc.

my choice for a 7 in blade stems from marine corps experience. all things = the larger blade will need less sharpening, be stronger, & for the zombies i perfer my ruger mini 14.

I've got a USN Knife that I used in the boy scouts...I just turned 50. I have it in my maxpedition BOB/survival kit I will be retiring this Knife and purchasing a RAT RC-4. A Bug Out Bag as some call them, is a pack with personal survival items. I,ve had one for years, but people told me I have a man purse. It goes every where with me, even on the back of my Harley. See one Hurricane and you will get one.

I'm now deciding between the Rat RC 4 and the Fallkniven S1. Can anyone recoomend which would be the better choice and why?

Thanks.

A Mora 510, I have a couple spares. They are cheap but they will do anything that needs done for me. It stays in there 100 percent of the time.

i had to make this exact decision. RC-4 vs FK S1.

one is made from 1095 high carbon steel (the RC-4), the other is made from laminated stainless/VG-10 (S1).

personally i'm getting an S1. the order will go in later this week.
