Is there a survival magazine out there that shows gear, tools, stories, advice, etc.? I know there is multiple hunting magazines but is there anything that specializes in survival?

Ive read some interesting survival stories in Backwoodsman. Wilderness Way is another good one, though that focuses more on primitive living and technology, which obviously can be helpful.

Backwoodsman is the closest thing I know, but that is much more about self reliance and homesteading. I think there might be one in the UK though.... something like bushcraft magazine... anyone know?

The time might be right for one. Seems like many of the outdoor magazines carry survival stories at least every couple of months.

Yeah, I've never seen a magazine that fills the right niche for (frankly) what this place discusses every day. It would be easy to imagine a great format for a popular magazine: common inexpensive and 'hotrod' gear reviews, stories, skillset development, travel reports, political issues... Everyone on here, I have to imagine, would be regularly picking such a magazine off the shelves.

But at WSS, we get to have more or less the same thing, but the ability to converse over the issues on top of it. We've really got a diverse group here, with tons of real-world experiences and varying tastes. Also, I've saved boatloads of money after finding out here that gear I wanted didn't really work too well.

But yeah, I'd still buy one :D

I always found something useful in either SOF or American Survival Guide, but thy got a little to politically oreintated for me ( I already know what my politics are). I subscrbe to wilderness way and enjoy it but wish it was a litle more techie., so I think a new survival rag would be great.

I'd just like to add that I'd be all over a mag like that.

Just encouragement, if, you know, you actually start one.:D

I bet there is a big market for it, gear reviews, fiction and non-fiction stories, pictures and hiking trail reviews, I'd buy it.

Here's the site for one I've been tempted to subscribe to, but it's pricey. I wish someone in the U.S.A would begin publishing a quality survival oriented magazine.

 I like this. Can't figure out how to watch all the videos yet but the magazine one is kinda neat. :D

Has any one ever read Accidents in North American Mountaineering it has storys of mountain survival and goes over what went wrong. I have always wanted to do that with storys of not just basic mountain incidents but all types on out door activities, hiking, camping, kayacking ect. Have storys either from the SAR guys or the induvials them selfs explaining what happened. Along with tips on survival things and reviews on products. Pics of area around the world. Have like pull out pages of check lists. Clothing tips and reviews. Bags use and type.

All geared to a more bushcraft/survival type of mind set. In stead of the generic "camping" that most are about now.

I think it would be great to start up such a mag! I would love to start one. I am sure we could start collecting stories and reviews, from members here and people the members know to start to get enough storys and external contacts to get enough info to put out in a mag.

What do you guys think? something worth while? How big of an target market is there?

First, let me say I know nothing about publishing a magazine. That said, I believe if one was introduced it would have to appeal to a fairly broad market, including the average hunter and fisherman. I think that most of the magazine could be devoted to survival, but then have a section each month on the following: Firearms, Knives, Tools (Shovels, saws, axes etc.). Anyone have any other suggestions?

You could print out a few threads from here a month, put a flashy cover on it, staple it together and call it a day.

What about starting a E-Mag for a starter (Emailed PDF). My partner used to be in publishing, advertising and design, I'm sure she'd give some worthwhile advice.

Yeah i think a online site or online/emailed newsletter would be a good way to get it started. And once there are enough people asking for a mag we put one out.

Hell there's enough people here to contribute great pics, gear reviews, trail reviews, international stories, the list goes on and on.

What do we think? Give it a crack?
