Survivalist's love of "batoning" with a knife seems abusive & impractical

when it comes to size, we are not going anywhere in this thread....

I must say something that i learned:

- the double guard on hidden tang
- hidden tang with corners (not rounded) between the tang and the blade
- holes in the tang, near the guard
- thumb traction grooves
- serrations on the edge
- ricasso too quickly inclined
- double bevel
- stainless steel with high hardening
- knocking on the guard

Those are all contributing factors for broken a knife with the batoning.... the more there are, the more it's easy that a failure is behind the corner...

And in any case there are also defects of manufacturing... wrong hardening ecc. ecc.

I could posts a lot of video like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmO0XSWhV04

If you want batooning, you need the right knife and the right tecnique ;)

I had no idea this was an ongoing drama when I got involved :)

Not all that surprising really, with the current trend of TV shows, reality and other there has been a increase in Survivalists, Preppers and other sorts.

Each to their own I say.

but... but.... what about the drama... and the controversy... :D
That reminds me of the commercial where the customers were expecting more drama, so an actor comes in creating a scene so they won't be disappointed.

I've never batoned a knife, but I got a Becker knife recently I'm wanting to take camping....:)

The drama isn't the preppers - it is the people that can't help but get upset that people are hitting their knives with sticks.

What size would you like?

What's the problem?
Now you have two knives. ;)

Seriously, if that broken knife means you die out there, you were just going to die anyway.

(Or think of it as now having a knife AND a wedge...everyone says wedges are good for splitting wood)

I don't care what people do with their knives personally. :D

If someone breaks or damages one somehow when I am around I don't say a word, might shake my head.

I need one of those.
Strangely, the city bus doesn't get you to as many remote places as that would. :(

I can't help but suspect that the OP knew it was an ongoing drama, especially since he or she has not participated in the thread since dropping this one.

Probably...but if not for the batonning, Strider, best survival/tactical/zombie knife, or best knife for $50 threads, what would we talk about around here? :D

Don't forget the Mall Ninja Fantasy knives . Something for everyone.

I never got why anyone would baton any knife. In all of my entire life I never needed to baton anything. I think that it is a knife requirement that the mall ninjas came up with. I was always told. Bring what you need and more for an adventure. If your out in the rough with only a pocket knife. Don't call me. Every one has there priorities

I think that it is a knife requirement that the mall ninjas came up with.

Except that woodsman from many decades ago did it too.
So yeah, you're just wrong. :)

You don't have to do it yourself, but it was not an invention of the dreaded "Mall Ninjas."

"Survivalists, Preppers, and other sorts" Can we take it that those are derogatory labels?

Into which category do you put the USMC Gunny who taught us how to "split wood with a knife" fifty years ago? "Other sort"?

Mors Kochanski?

Ray Mears?

Are there people being idiotic about beating on knives? Sure. Many have seen the guy with the 8" x 6' log smashing in the general direction of a knife.

Driven on a freeway lately? Idiots are everywhere. That observation does not exhaust rational discussion of driving.

If we could get past all the attitude, inclusive of smug superiority, on both extremes, there might be something to learn about risks and methods.
