Survive! Gso-6

Hey guys - I'd like some advice/feedback on this please....I ordered a Starter 5.1, so I'll have that in hand in the relative near future. My question is; do you guys think I should just cool it on trying to find a good camp knife because this new 5.1, even longer OAL (10.93") than the original GSO-5.1, will fill that need/want perfectly well?...or, with this new GSO-6, will I be getting something substantially different, more capable, or even just more fitting the "camp knife" criteria (whatever that is) than the Starter 5.1??

Thanks in advance!

edit: Revolver beat me to the choil comment!

Hey VD! I think it really comes down to your thoughts on choils, as the 6.0 is a 5.1 sans choil (give or take). As we say get both! sell the one you don't like or keep both. I am more of a choiless guy so when funds recover, I'll be placing an order for the 6.0, but i'd really like to try the 5.1 too....not sure this is helpful haha

You ask that to a bunch of knife addicts. This is like asking a fat guy if he wants pie. Of course you should buy more knives!!! Lol.

Thanks guys - I realize most of the difference is in the choil...that's the reason I'm contemplating the 6 over the 7/7 or 8, as the 6 is the largest choil-less GSO...and it ends up being about 5/8" more cutting edge going with the GSO-6...which now that I say it aloud is tough to justify, even for a class-A blade addict like me. I think what I'll do is wait for the new 5.1 to arrive and see if that satiates me or not. Knowing myself, I'm going to talk myself into needing the 6 - or better yet, by that time, Guy will have introduced his newest model - the GSO-7 (sans choil), and I'll jump all over that.

Now I'm craving pie....

I almost bought this on the spot, the only thing that brought me back to reality was I couldn't decide between the extra rust resistance of 20cv, and the unbreakableness of 3v

not to complicate things for you, but I think i remember reading on FB that the new heat treat increases the rust resistance of 3v.

hopefully Guy will comment on this further, but in the meantime here's a couple quotes from Facebook from the 4.5 Bushcraft pre-order posting.

" I don't currently have any plans of making the GSO-4.5 in a stainless steel. I chose CPM-3V for its outstanding toughness and edge retention. With the new heat treat protocol it should also have improved corrosion resistance as well."

"The main goal of the new heat treat protocol was to further increase blade toughness and improve edge stability. The improved corrosion resistance is simply a side effect of the new process. I'll take it though, it is a pretty neat side effect. "

That's how Nathan the Machinist describes his 3V heat treat - maximizing edge stability and increasing the stain resistance. I wonder if Survive or Peters have adopted his regime?

I find 3V to be fairly stain resistant with the original GSO/Peters heat treat. If this modified heat treat can increase toughness, edge stability and stain resistance:eek:, count me in.

Alright, well, speaking of 3V...I'm now the proud owner of another bid hunk of it. Sadly, I suffered a relapse late last night and ordered one of the new mid-tech Fiddleback Forge camp knives (I went for the black micarta). Just when I had my mind made up that I'd save some $ and order a GSO-6, I was finally able to find the accurate dimensions of the FF camper, and found that it was noticeably "more robust" that the 6, and as all of you can relate with I'm sure, I could have it in my shaky addicted hands in a few days as opposed to a few (or more) months with the GSO-6...and I needed it bad, I mean real bad...had the sweats and the whole deal. Now that I've got my dream camp knife ordered and I'll have it sometime next week, I feel that sense of calm that we all know of. I humbly apologize to Guy and Ellie, and anyone I've offended in our SK family. Survive! is still #1 in my book!! Again, I'm sorry....I'm a weak man.

That camp knife is sweet. I love the design and dimensions. I said before in one of my ranty threads that this beast is on my short list of non-S! knives. As the "production" version, I just couldn't handle the price tag. I did some math, though, and decided to use the same amount of money to get a 10 and pay for almost half a 2.7. Decisions, decisions!

Please work that baby into some S! related pics, ok?

I know exactly what you mean Silver, I did very similar math. I told myself that I could preorder a GSO-6 & a 4.5, and only pay about $70 more than I would pay buying a single FF camper....and I ran a few other scenarios...one of them involving the 2.7 as well. At the end of the day, the knife was just too perfect and too available, so I pulled the trigger and found a way to justify the price tag for a mid-tech blade.

All good! Use it, abuse it, review it and sell it on the exchange for a 6 in a few months. ;)

I do not own a FF mid tech or Custom Shop, but I have a bunch of the hand made versions. The reason that I have accumulated so many is mainly because I love the look, the feel, the company and all of the people in the sub-forum. But, if there is a do or die situation, I would rather have a GSO on my belt. The FF mid tech Camp knife in 3V would work just as well if the crap hit the fan, but the economics don't make sense. I get it that the availability is a big factor, which is part of the reason I have so many. Every Friday there is a shark tank to jump into. But if you can wait for it, the GSO is the better option IMHO.

Lol. I was thinking along the same lines. Or keep it, put it up against a 6 at some point and let us know the results.

The year before last when I got my first 4.1 I used it to clean several Whitetail deer and some squirrels (and maybe a rabbit, I can't remember now). I washed it with soap and water (sometimes it got some bleach if it got extra funky) and let it air dry. It got put away until the next time I needed it.

This went on through most of deer season (long here) and I finally pulled the scales at the end of the season. There was some impressive corrosion built up, especially around the holes where the screws go through the tang and along the top edge (I guess there was a slightly larger gap there maybe?).

I was able to clean it all off no problem with some steel wool and a little gun oil (it did leave some dark staining where the corrosion came off), but I don't keep them oiled because I use them to clean game so this is just something I have to deal with. I thought about sealing the scales but I imagine it wouldn't be perfect and water would still get in. No big deal though.

But if the new heat treat process increases corrosion resistance, I don't know how edge stability could get much better. I hit bone constantly with my 3.5 and 4.1 (both CPM-3Vand I don't even try to stay off bone anymore like I used to with other knives) and I don't get any rolling or chipping. Maybe once in a while I might get a slight dent (I guess that's rolling), but that is much easier to fix with a steel and a strop than a chip would be.

I guess we'll see how it performs when it is released.

Sulaco, you could always epoxy the scales on the knife... No more blood or water under the scales.
I put some heavy motor grease under the scales of some of my knives and it works great.

Sulaco, you could also try using mineral oil since it's non-toxic.

I just smear a thin coat of Vaseline under them and wipe the excess off. It's probably not food safe though.
