Survive! knives

Just got my 7/7 today (not from the Moving Sale so don't get stirred up), so now with my 5.1, I have a good backup, or primary. Gonna be a tryin' it out over the next few weeks to see which should lead and which should follow.

Any of you out there run this test and picked a winner?

I understand they are busy and all, but I don't give much leeway when it comes to shipping me something I paid good money for.
Waiting several weeks between clicking the button online and the item shipping (when all components are in stock and ready to go) is kinda ridiculous in my opinion. What's the holdup? Why can't they put my knife together and ship it out? I mean, isn't that the entire purpose of their business...?

I dunno, I guess I'm just used to online retailers like BladeHQ who ship out your order the next day.
I'm not trying to bust their balls, and I love the knives, but how are they "too busy" to send me the knife I bought?

They tell you when you place your order that it could take up to 15 days and I take that to mean business days. They also assemble them to order and them sharpen then at that point.

I don't know if he was referring to the 3.5 preorder which I also took part in. So in this case, I paid for my knife last September and have yet to receive shipping notice.

Thank you to Guy and all at Survive! for creating a new line of knives with softer steel!
I've just ordered an SK4 with S7 steel. Can't wait to receive it! 50% tougher than 3V, and better rust resistance compared to 1095 and way way tougher as well.
One thing that I personally feel is important is the ability to be able to easily sharpen any of my knives on a rock, in case I somehow lose/misplace my sharpener which has happened before on extended trips. I have gone full circle from starting with softer steels, then into the super steel territory, only to arrive back at preferring easy to sharpen steels once again. It's interesting why anyone would want a knife designed for wilderness/survival use that can only be easily sharpened using dedicated sharpeners if any edge damage is created and scandi's with 3V, you better pray that you don't chip/damage the edge because that's a real b!tch to remove all that super steel material as I found out. I know stropping works well for touch ups but beyond that for edge deformation issues I would GREATLY PREFER a softer steel like S7 to 3V. Just sharing thoughts and of course respect many folk love the hard stuff.

so what makes 3v better?. Just more corrosion resistant, and harder?

And is it gonna be harder to sharpen than 1095 on a diamond stone or just take longer?

Hey Olybears...thanks for sharing all this...looks like a great time. I was curious and am serious when I ask this question...do you think you could have made a seat somehow from all that wood? That is about the only thing I couldn't see in the picks, unless I missed it. I was thinking a quick 3 legger would be possible and the 10 is sure up to it; but you may not have had time.

Thanks! Out of shot, we had bear boxes (big aluminum boxes that we are lucky enough to have mules pack up for us) to sit on, otherwise I probably would have made something up!

50% tougher than CPM-3V? Got any links to where you got this info from? Thanks

In that case, I would call them. Now that they are in production, I would think preordered folks should be first in line. I ordered one with the Moving Sale and expect it to come with the 2nd 4.1 I purchased in the next week or so.

I don't know about 50% tougher. This is from Crucible.

It looks to me that S7 is more like 20 to 25% tougher. Unless you are planning to use your knife as a crowbar, what difference does it make? Really. :roll eyes:

Here's another comparison. It looks to me like 3V is superior to S7 in almost every other way. At HRC 58, it is 68% as tough as S7 and has 6 times the wear resistance
and is much more stain resistant.

Interesting. I'll check it out. Appreciate it.

Is it sucky to sharpen? This eill be my first knife in 3v my others are 1095 and a bk24 in d2. I just have an india stone

So what makes 3v better (cost more)
Holds an edge longer?

That's something that you have to decide for yourself. Read the specs. They are pretty clear IMHO.

I had a hard time finding the price of these steels online, but I don't see a lot of difference.

S7: .125X2X18 inches costs $76

CPM-3V: .207X1.5X24 inches costs $59

My BRK Bravo Necker II sharpens fine on my EPA, but that's really my only experience with it.
Haven't had to sharpen my GSO-10 yet :D

S7 is not necessarily softer than 3V, but it is much less wear resistant, so it should be easier to sharpen.

Does high wear resistance=holds an edge longer.
So does 3v hold an edge longer than s7?
I guess i dont really know what wear resistance means.
