Survive! Skills, Tips, Tricks and How to's

Tinbanger... Is that you in the pic?

Needle... When we say "operator" are we talking a phone operator, surgeon or crane operator??!! Or are we talking Meal Team 6

bhahaha the famed and dangerous meal team 6, assembled to hunt down the remaining feared mall ninjas!

Funny!

Riz, to be honest, I've never found a good definition of what an operator even is. I think I've figured it out using context clues though.

I believe it orignally was intended to refer to military guys who conduct special operations. It has been adopted by SWAT teams now and they also refer to themselves as operators. Its common definitition now applies to anyone who conducts CQB and raids so it encompasses military special forces, counter terrorism groups (ironically lately most domestic counter terrorism has been conducted by Patrol Officers and SWAT), elite forms of dignitary protection (like DSS) and groups like the ground branch of the CIA.

All the talk about packs got me looking again. I really wish I could find a good deal on a TT extended range operators pack. Looks ideal for me and my uses. But I don't wanna put $350 on a pack I hadn't even put on.

Also as far as all day packs check into GGG they have some pretty slick packs not bad pricing american made. I think there's a sell this weekend too. :) worth some drool time.

That Griff pack looks pretty nice.

The thing that is never in a lot of kits but always useful is Chapstick. If you have chapped lips it sucks, and there isn't an easy way to fix it. Plus it can double as a fire starter
Hi all,

Long time lurker here. Kevin from N'Awlins (New Orleans) area.

Redwood22's idea is a good one but there is one bit of advice I'd add: UNFLAVORED ChapStick!!!

When in Scouts, neighbor went to Philmont, NMex. One night asleep in tent, there was this big ripping sound. Suddenly a bear was leaning over him licking the cherry-flavored ChapStick off his lips. Then it just mozied away having had its dessert.

Haha and I just watched one on how to cook Bacon and eggs in a brown paper bag. Who knows how good it is but it might sustain you I guess.
A lifetime ago I did this in Scouts. Most of my peers sent theirs up in flames. Wasn't bad tasting - certainly edible - if you don't mind a paper-ish tinge to the taste.

Not hard to do. Key is not to let the flame/heat linger too long in any one spot of the paper bag; keep moving bag around.

never did the paper bag one, but we used to put eggs/veggies/spices in ziploc bags and boil them, they come out as eggroll shaped omelets... the boiled plastic isn't so good now a days, but it was effective. I do agree with your point of flavorless chapstick...HOWEVER just think of the story your neighbor would have missed out on had he not chosen cherry...now that he is alive and well and all..

Sous vide omelet! Way cool and before it became popular!

ChapStick: hahaha I agree.

Ronin, glad you decided to make some posts! I just cannot find unflavored/unscented chapstick anywhere. The only thing close is vaseline, but that doesn't come in the convenient twisty tube. The struggle!

EDIT: Also, some jerk totally derailed this thread, so thanks for getting us back in track!

Avoid flowery scented shampoo and body bath. I have a friend who had bees following him because he was sharing his wife's shampoo. They were circling around his hair.

I've found it at Wallies World (Walmart) and Walgreen's, though the supply of flavored types seems larger.

ETA: Thanks Silver Needle. Nice to be a part of this community.

I just learned about this, steel wool will burn very hot and will catch a spark as easy or easier than cotton. Supposedly it works best with very fine steel wool, and does not require much oxygen. The biggest difference between it and cotton is that you can use a battery to light it even if it's wet!
Here's a site that shows it.. http://www.practicalsurvivor.com/firesteelwool

That's really unbelievable. I never thought that steel wool would make a good tinder. Thanks for sharing.
