SURVIVOR - Progress Thread

Here's a pic of the sheath - let me know what you guys think.

The price on this one is $95 natural leather.

Add $20 for tooling, and $20 for black leather.

I'm very impressed with how it turned out....I expected it to be a LOT bigger and heavier...but Butch is THE MAN!

He also figured out a nice-looking way to tie in front of the handle to the sheath. Together with the folded-over spine...it "locks" the blade in place. The strap is more of a formality - in case you end up upside-down. And it is a beefy strap - integral to the sheath...thick and stout.

I put it on my belt and was able to draw the knife very easily. I really don't know how else to explain it. It just "feels right".

Like I said...I was worried....but my faith/trust paid off!

Hope you like it Jim!

Dan

Yes - forgot to mention the double-stitching too....

Like I said, Butch did not hold back on this....figured if guys were going to buy one, they'd be using it...and they'd want their money's worth...not just a display piece!

Dan

Wow, that does look very good! I'll put my name in for one. Butch is doing nice work, glad I sent the ironwood to him. How well does that strap get out of the way on the draw? I've got another large sheath with a similar strap arrangement, and I keep cutting it, sometimes hard to keep a big blade out of the way.

edited - had a sheath from Kenny Rowe I think that had the strap on some type of swivel arrangement. Don't have it any longer or I would take a pic. It worked very well, essentially the strap swiveled down completely out of the way. Just a thought.

Yes - I've talked with Butch about that...and we decided it would up the price too much...not to mention plagarize Kenny's work.

The strap does lift up good...and you can put the knife back in with one hand - but it does take practice...you won't get it the first time you try it.

OK, cool. Didn't know it would infringe on Kenny's work.

Man, there has got to be some way. I just know from experience that sheathing one of theses big blades is hard enough without having to be messing around with a strap, and the repercussions of messing it up can be ugly. Anybody have any ideas? Cost, bah, if I'm going to pay $95 for a sheath, I'll pay $5 more for a functional strap arrangement.

ETA - Well, 5 minutes of looking found me at least 2 other well known sheath makers that are using swivels. Must not infringe too much?

Not to belabor the point, Dan, I just think the strap is a pretty important piece of the sheath, and getting it right is important for ease of use and safety.

I realized I did have a sheath with a swivel in house. These are both by the same maker. The sheath on the left the strap swivels down out of the way. The one on the right doesn't, and it is always a juggling act to keep the strap out of the way while resheathing. I always feel like I am going to slice the strap, my hand, or both. It's just a matter of time until I'm tired, cold, and my grip is gone (these are choppers after all), and I end up cutting myself. Actually, I'm going to sell the sheath on the right and get one with a more functional arrangement.

I realize the Survivor sheath doesn't have the same arrangement, and I haven't used it in person, but from looking at it, it looks like the same juggling act. Just trying to help get a great sheath out there! :)

Jim Hall - the leather sheath showed up today!

Will post pics later...

Dan

Not sure why I made "front & center" on these two posts:confused: but I think the sheath is very nice looking. However, I do tend to agree with mapper66 about the strap problem. If the blade was being used a lot during the day on a field trip I think the strap would be a pain. Just my .02!

oops - got my wires crossed.....too many Jim's....:foot:

Jim K (jlkitch) is the one waiting for the sheath.

What do you think about no strap at all? and making it a bit deeper pouch?

Dan

I like the sheath...looks good except the strap looks too narrow for such a big knife...

I like the look of the sheath. It's beautiful and think the double stitching is both attractive and functional. I would love a swivel on the strap. For knives that I carry this size, and even a bit smaller, I use a dangler sheath. I think a good drop-leg dangler is the way to go.

feel free to post pics of other sheaths, guys....I'm not sure if your descriptions fitting my understanding of the terms...better if I can see an example of what you mean.

Thanks!

Thanks, I have been searching like crazy for some previous comments I had made about the Survivor sheath.:D

Nearly all of my sheaths are pouch type so I am use to that kind. Don't have enough experience with big knives to know how this one will work with the straps the way they are. I do like the looks of the sheath and probably would prefer the pouch style. However, I will yield to the experience of those more knowledgeable and go with the flow.

This is a Chuddy Bear sheath I have for my Busse Hell Razor. It is a dangler with a swivel strap.

I hope that clarifies what I'm talking about.

I like a deeper pouch, and no strap. I also like to have the top of the belt loop about even with the ricasso area of the knife, so the knife handle is more exposed and the knife doesn't hang so low on the belt.

My first vote would be for the swivel. I really like the way Butch worked the top of the sheath where it meets the scales, and a pouch would loose that. If the swivel is not an option, I think the pouch would probably work pretty good, and I'm sure Butch would make it look great.

What I can say is that the first 15 are FINISHED!!! Just need to etch the logo and sharpen.

Dan

Cool ...... thank you for the update Dan.

Feel free to send mine on without a sheath when you etch and sharpen, my neighbor is gonna make me a sheath. ;)
