Here is to you bro! Ye be missed. Arrrrrr.

I miss my mentor Sarge. And now the search function works again, I want to encourage all the newbs to go and search out his posts. They were good for us all and good for the country IMHO.

Anyway, since I've been thinking about my friend a lot lately, I decided to give away one of the knives he loved, and gave to me. (Pay the Karma forward, etc)

So, I will be giving a Laguiole that he sent me (free of charge) away right here at the Cantina.

So please, reminesce, post links, and pay tribute to our friend. Discuss the knives he loved. Tell stories about Sarge. Post pics of the ones he made for you! Post knives he inspired and directed us all how to make. The one with the most moving story about ole Sarge gets a free knife!

Jake and I will judge this affair (if Jake is willing and there is any interest), and to pay Jake out for that, and because its long over due, I'm going to send him a Laguiole too. That way he'll finally get to try one out.

Sarge was a regular here when I discovered this place. I didn't get to know him as well as some others may have, so I don't have any stories to tell. I can say, though, that he was a man of honor and integrity and I felt his words came directly from his heart and experience. Count me among those who would be most tickled to hear from him again. A very nice tribute, Andy.

You're still welcome to participate. Find a link to a tutorial, project, knife or story he told and link to it so others can see it easily. I'm hoping this thread can consolidate his stuff so its easy for others to find!

Yep. Thats a goodun! I'll call you entry #1 in post #4.

Edited to add: So far, you're winning.

This isn't an entry, because I have several of Sarge's knives. I use one of them every day, as he intended. But it's an illustration of something he wrote in the post linked to above.
Wish I had time to come down and have a cold pint with you at the old Dog & Duck pub Berk. Good times. In my mind's eye, I can still see Pappy sitting there wearing his sly grin, and all of us standing out there in the parking lot, right in the shadow of the state capitol, sunlight flashing off gleaming blades. None of us would have hurt a fly, given our druthers, but to casual observers we no doubt looked like a barbarian horde, ready to pillage and plunder.
:D

Thats awesome Berk! Thanks for posting here!

Great thread idea, Andy:) Sorry it took me so long to reply to this thread. I was out of the office for 24 hours gambling with the in-laws. As a twist of fate would have it, the really ritzy steakhouse we went to had Laguiole steak knives for the meat. I got to share with my wife, mom-in-law, and father-in-law a little knife history:D My wife asked if the steak knives folded, and I told here that a folding steak knife at a restaurant would be silly. Then I got called condescending....Thank God for Bourbon!:D;)

I miss Sarge a lot. He was a real embodiment of what the Cantina was all about. I still remember his po'boy knife tutorials as well as his stories. Some of my favorites were about the real world use of his khuks in The Sandbox. Who could forget the khuks for soldiers campaign years ago. I know that he got the itch to move around a bit, but I sure wish he would visit from time to time.

The only knife that I have of his is a small pocket fixed blade that Kismet sent my wife....which I promptly snapped up for myself. Sorry, I am usually a gentleman, but that little beaut was just screaming for a simple leather sheath. It felt so good in my pocket, that I just had to leave it in there. I had no choice in the matter, ya see:D I'll see if I can find any pics of it on the old computer. It has a nice clip pointed blade maybe 2.5" long and a simple epoxy polished horn/antler handle long enough for a 2 finger grip. Of course, anyone that know anything about Sarge knows that his stuff is SHARP:eek: Even gave me a little kiss when I was unwrapping the package it came in;)

Its cool Jake. PM me your address. I have a knife for you.

Cmon guys. Links to Sarge stuff!

Man, Andy! Saw this and I thought Sarge was back. :o

Hm, did I ever show you the curly maple slicer he made... that perfectly matches the nessmuk you made?

I had considered getting a Laguiole for a long time, but never pulled the trigger. Sarge's continual praise about these knives really got me thinking about it. So one day I just decided to get one.

This is still one of my favorite knives.

This thread is really bringing back some good memories, guys:thumbup:

The Lagouile sure is an elegant folder.

As per Sarge, anyone that can shave with a bilton deserves our respect. :D

I miss Sarge also. His posts were refreshing, but I'm gonna have to ban you for not asking me to judge the entries. Sorry Andy, but I gotta keep my rep intact.:D

Too many pics for this thread, but Sarge made a bunch of knives for me to sell to help out Ram. You can see some of them at http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v163/sferguson53/Public/Sarge/

I emailed him a while back, but got no answer. I hope he's well and happy. :D

I have three of his knives and carry one of them frequently.

Sarge thought he could do anything he set his mind to, and he was right! He could do more with less, than anyone I've ever met.

Andy, I know Sarge was very proud of you, and so am I!

OK. You guys have to stop prefacing your cool ass posts with Not an Entry. The guys that have been here the longest knew Sarge the best. Post away.

Fantastic post Steve. I got one of those knives. Not in that pic. Mine was the coolest one. ;):D Of course I also got the Bonny wee Sgian Dubh from him too. And he sent my wife a knife at the same time, so I have 3!:D:D

Sorry Ted. Maybe you and Jake should judge. That IS a fantastic idea.;)

My God, Steve....I had forgotten just how gifted he is:eek:

Look at that Gaucho! All of those are heirloom quality:thumbup:

Hey...he's not dead, guys. :) Just on about his business, shooting arrows and stuff, doing ON THE ROAD, or running a bar owned by a beyoootiful red-headed woman who knows a good thing.

Greg also went under the nic "Thumbcutter Goodbeard" from the Talk like a Pirate celebration. A search found this thread...replete with veers, anecdotes, and suggestions for villainy, and --one of the most gruesome links I can remember..
