If I remember correctly we share the same birthday Nov 20. He made the most amazing knives from files

is sarge still alive? or is he just on a vision quest?

wasnt sure.
ryan

did a search and read alot of his old posts.good man!

Yep, Ryan, as far as we know the ol' Sarge out there somewhere. Probably still pounding steel and gifting it to folks lucky enough to be deemed his friend:)

He just felt that he had grown too many roots where he was at. When you've been all over the globe multiple times, I'm sure you get the itch if you sit too long in one spot. As I'm sure he knows, Sarge is ALWAYS welcome and encouraged to return to us here at the Cantina.

I miss Sarge, and think of him often, Though my correspondence with him was limited to the Cantina. I don't kniow if I could fairly refer to him as a friend (though I would certainly like to) but he is a man I have tremendous admiration for, and truly enjoyed his presence here on the forums.

I learned alot from him, both in skill and attitude. It aint no secret that he and Andy were the ones that taught me to make a knife, (whether thay knew it or not) and got me started. Not that I've ever progressed to any major level, but it feels darn good to make my own darn effective cutting tools for usually $2-$5 dollars. Whenever people in other posts ask me about making "file knives" (more appropriately referred to as po' boys):D I always tell them the basic idea, and then give credit to Sarge, and tell them to search the Cantina for his threads. I get a feeling that few do, cause they always thank ME profusely for the knowledge being passed on from Sarge. Heck, I aint no genius, I was just a couple spots ahead of them in Sarge's line of knowledge.

Just a short while before he left, He gave me a Nessmuk. a very sharp knife for REAL wilderness ventures that has the only bone handle I have ever loved. He gave it to me the same week I had ordered a Bark River Nessy. The soulless Bark River has never been used, and is seeking a new home. Sarge's Nessmuk will probably be heading out on a few bear and moose hunting trips this year, especially if I use my muzzleloader. It just seems somehow the....appropriate thing to do.

My favorite thread with him....gosh....It's hard to say, really....but I think it's this one: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=427282&highlight=douk

The only reason this one comes up is because it's the only thread where It ALMOST feels like I got to contribute something to him instead of constantly taking.

Yeah, I know he aint dead, I imagine he's pretty well satisfied, especially being he was always one of the one's that seemed smart enough to realize that happiness comes from within, rather than the car lot, real estate market, or other material pursuits. I don't know if I really would even want to see him back, as long as he's enjoying what he's doing, but...I still darn sure miss 'im.

That WAS an excellent thread. And relevant too. Not long after that thread Sarge sent me the Laguiole that I'm going to give away now.

Great post RWS!

I still have and rotate my Douk Douk into my pocket.

Count me another big fan of Sarge's, and sorry he's not found the way or the interest to post.

Like everyone else, I loved Sarge's knifemaking threads. Thanks to him, when my father passed and I ended up with an old, worn-out file he'd used for years, I knew what to do with it. The first knife I made - reminds me of Dad and Sarge every time I strap it on.

Thanks to Sarge, when my brother and his two boys came for a visit last summer, on the heels of a very nasty divorce, I was able to share some time making knives with them - which went on a long canoe trip later in the summer.

Finally, Sarge sent me a beautiful 18" AK when he set off on his walkabout. I'd mentioned on a thread that it was on my "to buy" list, and an e-mail showed up shortly after, asking for my mailing address. It arrived beautifully polished and sharpened, with a re-profiled karda.

To me, Sarge represents among the best aspects of this place, when it works as it can. I look forward to the day he shows up again, showing more of his trademarked generosity and self-deprecation.

Andy,

Great thread, and I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner. I have 4 Sarge knives, the 3 shown in this thread here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=412861

And a beautiful antler handled knife he made that is the single sharpest knife I own, that was a surprising and wonderful gift to me from my good friend Aardvark. It has an edge on it that is just incredible.

I also posted a thread about Sarge giving me a great old straight razor, one that he took overseas with him. I still have it, unchanged. I thought about putting some nice wood scales on it, but realized it has a magic all it's own just as it is, so have left it alone except for stropping it each time I use it. He included a hand made case for it.

I have actually gotten pretty good with it! Here is the thread telling about it, and I had deleted the original picture but add it back here.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=410544

FYI, I sent Sarge a check for probably less than what the razor was really worth, knowing what he paid for it. He has never cashed it, and that was nearly two years ago! And Steve showed just some of the many knives he so generously made for the Ram raffles. A talented and generous man indeed.

Oh I had forgotten about the straight razors! Man, Sarge really did pump a lot of blood in this place. I've got a boat load of boxes to open up in an incoming shipment today. I have elected to pack the little pocket fixed blade made by Sarge to help me in this task.

Some how, some way, I hope that the good Sarge makes his way back to the Cantina one day.

Yes!! Great post Norm! Thanks for playing!

I got to looking at Norm's thread, and now I remember why i don't use a straight razor. Kurt carved his face up something fierce with that bad boy:eek:

Then here I sit, little sissy powderpuff complaining about how his ergonomic 3 blade razor offends his sensitive neck:p

I only had brief contact with Sarge during his quandry of retirement decision. Uncle Bill had talked with him and suggested I send him an email about retirement from a fellow USAF NCO SMSgt Ret. I don't think it was too well received. Sarge had his job really in his blood.
He did many good things for people, a dayum good man!

I have often wondered if he had eventually joined one of the 'Security' companies for Iraq or Afganistan. His experience and talent would have been a big asset and his adrenalin would be pumping to bring life back to him.

Where ever he is, he is remembered and respected.

I remember why I don't use one too. At 35 I have almost no wiskers to speak of.......;)

I would rather be beardless, Andy. My ancestry is such that I can only grow a patch beard. Not the thick manly Grizzly Adams kind, but something that is between hobo and carnie folk.

Sounds close to what I have. It's called a "Western Beard" - full of wide, open spaces. :)

Don't forget Sarge's cool Dietz oil-lantern thread.

I can't search ;) but I wound up with three of them- and use them. There's a type of oil you can use indoors, even, with no smell. You need to use a new wick, though, if you've burned citronella or other types of oil in it. Handy, cheap light.

I saw that Dietz lantern thread the other day.

C'mon folks. Put up some Sarge Links. I'm giving away a knife here!!!

Nobody has linked to the threads where he discussed using his khuks around the bases in Afghanistan. Etc. Etc. Etc.
