WOW thats quite a story.. i have a close family friend who was in a german concentration camp and got liberated by the allies. No matter how much we may disagree on knives i think everyone here can agree that they hate nazi's.... but there i go getting off subject again :D

He wasn't in a concentration camp, his only "crime" was that he was in the Belgian Army, and we lost in '40:(. He was in a normal prisoner of war camp until '45.

But yeah... we're drifting off-topic again!;)

Kind regards,

Jos

I actually wasnt aware the germans bothered to seperate pows from the "undesirables" but i guess my wn experiences make me even more prejudiced than most people. Well either way thanks for the interesting story

You sound a little more rational here so ill give you rational post in response. There really aren't true knife fights like in movies people pull whatever they got and try to kill the other person with it. If i was in a bar and a guy pulled a knife on me id use a chair or a pool cue long before id use a knife so that im far the f%^k away from that guys knife.

I carry a gun for SD a little khar CW9 loaded with hydrashocks if a guy pulled a knife on me id double tap ( i think the new politically correct term is controlled pair) him in the face. There's this aura that surrounds blades of all types that makes people think there is something supernatural about them like there are super martial arts attatched to them. i had a buddy i went to school with and shortly after he graduated he was waiting at a bus stop (i come from the dc area and there is alot of gang activity) my buddy was in a gang and was wearing colors there was a guy at this bus stop looking for someone and when he couldnt find the person he was looking for he grabbed my buddy by the shirt and stabbed him 32 times turned his insides into swiss cheese. The guy who had the knife was a 16 year old with a cheap made in china piece of crap and it did its job so to some degree yes you are right. But knives that are designed for what we have dubiously termed knife fighting are purpose built for the task.

I used to carry my emerson k-bit all the time for SD and it was purpose built for SD small and quick with a sharp curved edge capable of doing some real damage however full size fighting blades tend to be double edged with either dagger or modified bowie profiles.

Now id like to point out that a combat knife is different from a fighting knife. a combat knife can be used as a fighting knife and will usually incorporate a guard towards that end but they tend to have more utility driven designs as they are mainly used as tools to pry smash bash and of course cut.

Also sorry but you came off as a serious mall ninja.

So thats the meat of my disagreeing with you now on to the military as a fighting knife. Sure you could slice or stab someone with it but that doesn't make it ideal also it wouldn't get into the fight as quick as a waved emerson or a fixed blade. furthermore the thin blade could be shattered or broken with an ASP baton or pipe or chair leg or chain or baseball bat or another similar blunt object all of which as i mentioned earlier i would use before a knife as will most people who have been in a fight or two.

I really don't like discussing this whole knife fight thing here on general knife discussion this is more of a prac-tac thing and i also think its a bit silly and naive to think that talking about a subject like this on the internet will help make you a better knife fighter.
I'm sorry to hear that I come off as a mall ninja (I'm not surprised that I do to be honest). Believe it or not, I agree with most of your post, however (I may be wrong) but it sounds like you are under the impression that I said a knife is the be all end all SD weapon.
Allow me to elaborate:
you are in DC where you are allowed to carry a gun. Even with my limited fighting knowledge I know that a gun will make a much better SD weapon than a knife. Using a pool que or a baseball bat would also probably make a better weapon than a 4 inch knife (I fully agree with the first part of your post). However, unlike you, I wasn't in the military and being in Australia, I can't get a concealed weapons permit (think of it as UK laws gone wrong). I don't drink and have never been in a bar so I will take your word on the bar fight thing. What I mean to say is: if someone were to attack me with a weapon I would run for my life (or throw my N97 at them and hope it hits them in the head :D). If running is not an option and I had my back to a wall, I certianly wouldn't mind having a knife in my pocket - Which is what I have been trying to get at since my 2nd post (got carried away on the first post).

EDIT: If were to get into a fight, it would either be in uni, or in the street. Most people in uni and most people on the street here don't carry baseball bats and chair legs. Also, better knife fighter? HAH! Like I said, running would be my first option and chucking my brick phone at their heads with the hope of knocking them out with them would be my second option :P

This has turned out so nicely I think I'll just shut up and enjoy the warm fuzzies.

ps I sold my military it just looked too thin and weak.

Haha. This thread nearly went south at some point but instead went on to a big (and friendly) drift to wartime stories. It has traveled far indeed during this time but to the credit of all who participated the discussion never turned into ugly name-calling. Carry on folks!

Nice to hear back from you. I certainly didnt mean to directly insult your character or anything to that extent, and i am sorry if offense was taken. :foot:

Actually my CCW is for VA but it covers about 25 states. DC is a pain in the ass but sometimes i carry there as well....

Never been in a bar? WOW:eek: but that's why i mentioned chairs and such i didn't mean to imply carrying a chair legs around in plain view. :p

I always thought that australia had pretty loose weapons laws guess i'm wrong. Ive never heard a bad thing about it tho and i cant wait until i get a chance to visit your country someday, but that will have to wait until after i go to europe

My best friend and i have a favorite quote from a show called desert punk we like to apply to situations like this: A man has to know when to stand and fight, and when to run like a little bitch! :D

Take care

Heh none taken mate. Aussie knife laws are even worse than uk knife laws: in the uk you can carry a slipjoint around that is less than 3 inches from my understanding. In Australia is it illegal to carry any knife unless you have a valid reason :(
It sucks, but it's easy to get around: just carry some fruit around in your bag or put some fishing gear in your car :P

Some better laws would help too, wouldn´t they? :D

I wish. Hooray for draconian knife laws :barf:

Well you have certainly dissuaded me from ever wanting to live in australia...:( I think it sucks that you ausies have to put up with that kind of stuff. i always just kind of imagined that with all that wilderness everyone carried a knife around and a rifle of some sort. i guess i was a very misguided.:foot:
