Fox said:Dan, as Roger noted, there is a liner. It is Kydex. Sometimes the top has to be trimmed a bit to fit the knife design and make sure the retaining strap fits behind the front finger cut. This one had to be trimmed about 1/8". I just use some good tin snips, which work quite well. While you cannot see it under the bottom strap of the sheath, there is a double headed screw that allows removal of the liner for modification.
Fox, I like these sheathes. My question is how wide a blade would fit in them? The knife I'm making has a 1 1/2" wide blade, length 6 1/2". I was looking at the Blackhawk Airborne Tactical sheath by Spec Ops.Fox said:Thanks a bunch for the compliments, guys.
Dan, I must confess, as you might have guessed that sheath is from Spec Ops. Most of my customers prefer that type of sheath for tacticals or utility knives. Sometimes I use the Navigator model. The one in the photo that is going to Afghanistan, is a Survival sheath. Spec Ops Brand out of TX is the manufacturer. I got the latest shipment from 1SKS since they had the best price and their service has always been excellent. Their entire line can be seen here: Spec Ops Brand.
I believe it was Greg Covington who turned me onto these when he made a post about using them for his fighters, some months back. At least I think it was Greg. At my advanced age it might have been someone else! If so, my apologies.![]()
Sounds like I'll go with the longer sheath. Thanks again.Fox said:Scott, I think your blade may come up against the screw in the bottom of the Kydex if you use the short sheath. It will be touch and go. You cannot go wrong if you go with the longer sheath. I think there is only $4 - $5 difference between them. The measurement appears to be from the top of the Kydex to the screw. I have not actually measured the depth of the sheath and do not have another 6" around here. I always measure from the front of the handle to the tip of the blade before deciding which sheath to use. If 1SKS does not have them in stock, check with Brigade Quartermaster. I had to wait about three weeks for the last batch of sheaths from Spec Ops. Apparently, a lot of them are going to the military.
