Tacticals Made by Us for Special OPS Forces

After thinking about it and reading Dan's and Roger's post, I geuess I am in. Brian, email sent.

My misgivings weren't about retaliation-I'm old, live alone, have a good dog and am armed and onery. I just didn't want to give the impression that I had donated to get publicity. There have been makers on other forums here that have blown their own horn pretty loudly over this and I thought it cheapened the act.

Agreed......I'm in. E-mail sent

Brian,I also dont want to do this for the publicity. But if you want to add me to the story that is fine with me.If someone wants to make something bad of it then they can find me and take it up with me personally. All the info you will need from me is here on this post or at my website..

I don't understand why making it known to the public that we did something to help our troops is like trying to get publicity or drum up business. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm very proud to be able to contribute to help our people and in no way am I trying to get knife orders out of this project. I don't come on BF specificly to get business. If I do good, if I don't, I could care less. I make knives because I enjoy it and I come to BF to learn, talk to people with a similar interest and hopefully make some friends. :)

I did say in my last post (I think it was my last post) I would say no more about the subject mentioned above. However, I have gotten an email or two that also relates to what you are saying. This is the way I personally see it: my view is publicity helps spread the word. Its kinda like advertising. You get the word out and knife makers that may not even have a computer might see it and become interested. Who knows and there are really good knife makers all over the free world. I can't see any editor approving an article about totally anonymous knife makers. To repeat though what I earlier warned, if you're out there the enemy may see you and your family, so use your best judgement. Even the super brave guys we are wanting to support do not allow their identiies to be known. I hope it gets published and for the correct reason.

One other note that I have in very recent days been meaning to mention here, it appears our SF Alpha is about to become saturated and very soon I will have to ask advise of our contact as to what team to support next. This is really good. A successful beginning to this project. The way I am counting it up 10 knives have been shipped. Seven have been received. They are a team of 13. There is the fallen man and one that I understand is leaving because of time spent. That would total 15. With Bruce's 3 knives and the one I am to make we have 14 knives shipped or spoken for. That leaves two more to complete our team. I say two more because the man going State side will hopefully be replaced. Also there is a knife of Brians to count too. So very soon now I will be asking our SF Alpha for advice on who to continue shipping. You guys are the best in my view.

If I have neglected to remember any other knives in the works, and I am sure there are, please forgive me. Times are fairly busy of late.

Roger,
I am cutting the new blank out early enxt week so I hope to het you something in a few weeks. Dont worry....you'll get it :D ;)

I'll get your info Bruce.

Hi Roger,

I have one that I made for this project. It is out for heat treating as we speak. It has a 7" blade at approximately 1.5" wide and is made of 1/4" ATS-34.

Best Regards
Dean

AOK the way I look at it Guys
the more I sell the more I can give no mater if it's here or the others, when you're full time it's about the only way. I stand My ground. we are the tax payers, we all are in it, and they do target us all. 911 remember and all the other attacks here on our ground. we can not deny it. it's their war that they asked for..are we to sit and let
the people of the towers go down in vain? I think not..Taxes Plus, right here.

OH BTW speaking of target, do you know the US Target Store is French owned. just thinking about backing..or not  . :footinmou

Brian is the spear head for the Blade thing. I sent this to Brian a day or so back. Brian is very respectful of the thread and all pertaining to it, including all involved. I wondered if he might post it, which would have been fine with me and our SF. Without asking Brian, who is in charge of the Blade involvement, I do hope he does not mind me posting this email set. I feel it important to share all possible correspondence I become aware of between us and ours with all us in this. Brian is responsible for correspondence between him and Blade and I would not expect all that correspondence to be made public for good business reasons.

The email set below is in reverse order.

Roger

I will be more than happy to provide a team picture,
we will take care of the faces. Let me know if they
want any write up from us...all of my guys really
support this and we will help in any way possible.

Thanks

BTW just checked out the forum and wow! the new
knives look awesome!

Thanks again

More article info-
Well, there interested in shooting some pictures of future knives before we ship them out. I still have my 2 to finish up(just got them profiled last night) and I know others have knives to complete.
Anyone wishing to have a knife photographed, try to have yours completed by early April. We will send out what we have to the editors before shipping to Roger. If you ship your knives to me I will take care of the rest.
I wish we could have had all the knives photographed but this is evolving as we go. I will not release any names unless you tell me so. You can send me a knife and I will not disclose the maker also. Just a way for us to get out there.

Brian,

Might it also be okay to state that those opposed to the mag publicity can just send theirs directly to me for shipping straight to SF?

Also Brian if you could consider this please: I wonder instead of having makers wondering who to send to for what if it might be best just to keep it as simple as before. I know the mag is your doing and it is your front and I support that and you in that. Logistically it might better things to continue with one central depot. In which case I can send either to your man at Blade or direct to SF, as the individual maker requires. What da ya think?

Thanks and please advise.

RL

Sounds good Roger. Send all knives to you. I can help fund the shipping to the Mag. Thanks for keeping things simple...I tend to add steps when there not needed :p

Roger and Brian, let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. Roger if you are in need of another knife, I'm more then able to put together another one.
Scott

Brian, you have managerial qualities in you. Very glad to hear your opinion. Don't email me your contact info yet. I'll ask for it when I have knife(s) to send. Okay? Let me - no let all us here know when you feel it looks like it will really fly. Thanks

Scott, can't get too many but remember the home front too. You've done yours already, haven't you? I don't even expect to start mine until April. :o

Hi,

I don’t normally jump into a conversation that isn't directed to me, however in this case I hope you can forgive the intrusion.

I simply wished to take a moment to say thanks...I am not an SF Operator nor lay claim to be. I am simply someone currently in the same Area of Operations as your team and wanted to take the time to thank each one of you. It is as your Team Chief noted a truly selfless act and given from your hearts. Thanks for caring enough and I too will benefit from your gifts in that I depend a great deal on those guys getting their job done.

So THANK YOU...I’m sure you don’t hear that enough....

Jim

Rlinger could you email me your mailing address? I finished up the knife i was working on. Here are some more pics of it, and one shows the balance point which is a little back from the guard, i made it a little back heavy for hammering with the endcap.
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/terry_dodson/album?.dir=d833&.src

When you get it if you dont think it measures up to what they are looking for i can send you the return shipping.

Here are the specs i listed earlier:
blade is 1080 steel, clay coated (Imperial Fireplace cement/mortar from Lowes), heated in my coffee can forge, quenched in my ammo box of veggie oil over water, tempered twice for 2 hours at 385 degrees, sanded to 220 grit, etched with a qtip with ferric chloride lightly. Blade is 6 inches long (1" wide), tang is 5" (with 10/32 threads on the end. I ordered a steel 1/4" x 2" guard with a 3/16" x 5/8" slot milled in it, the handle i also ordered with a 1/4" by 5/8" slot thru the oval Hickory wood (i am going to dye it dark), the end cap i also ordered is octaganal with a 10/32 threaded hole half way into it. The sheath i bought at a gun/knife show for $8 (it came with a knife but.....).

I shaped and dyed the hickory handle with brown leather dye, soaked it in teak oil for 2 days, let it dry, sanded to 220 grit, added 4 coats of teak oil, finished it with 0000 steel wool to take out the shiny glare. All metal has ferric chloride etching. I used JB Weld to fit and seal guard, handle, and end cap.

edit: i forgot to give you my email, it is terry_dodson@yahoo.com

Jim (CPT Jim),

What a nice suprise for us to hear from you from Afganistan. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I am not educated well enough to write appropriate words describing my feelings toward such fine makers as they are doing this for the cause. I believe we all here in country and elsewhere, save a few wacky Libs that seem to get most of the media attention, back you and yours all the way. You guys are a gigantic part of the reason we can be. Without you - then what. Say hey from all us here when you see the guys.

RL

Terry,

You bet. I'll email that to you tomorrow. I've been up late again grinding and its past time to shower and hit the sack. Thanks Terry and I am sure your knife is right up there. EDIT: went and looked at her. That's something and hichory is good. Anxious to see her Terry. I wasn't able to study it much as I am way past bed time. I'll take a better view and reading tomorrow (which I see is already today). Thanks Terry.

RL

Well, here are the 2 for this project. Looks like the first set huh? :D :D
