Tai Goo

Tai's knifemaking skills are more than well known and impressive to say the least. I consider him one of the most creative makers going.

One the the best parts of 2004 for me was when he spent a few days at my house around Blade time.

He is as good of a person as he is a maker and that is saying a lot. There have not been many times in my life when the friendship of a brother gelled so quickly.

Here is another picture. The guard and handle have been rough shaped and rough fit. Just thought you guys might like to get a bit of an idea of what it will look like when it is done. More pictures to come.

Keith,

That knife is already stunning. The blade shape reminds me a little of his "Rainbow Bowie" and the red stag will look great with the fittings he will put on there. Congrats and thanks for the thread!

It has been brought to my attention that not everyone likes the look of this knife. That doesn't surprise me in the least. When you have a design like this, it is going to evoke different feelings in different people. There was a time that I wouldn't have cared for this knife either; my tastes ran to the more conservative look. Over the years my taste in knives has changed and evolved. There may well come a time that I like the highly ornate fantasy/art knives. Right now that seems unlikely, but then again, a few years back I would never have thought of owning a knife like this one.

That would only be a problem if you were buying one for each of us. Say... that's not a bad idea.. can be first in line? Can I, can I? ;) :D

I used to not like his designs much, but they have grown on me immensely. I love his work these days -- so clean, flowing, and absolutely unique. Great snag Keith. :)

Yup,
I started on Case patterns in the early '60s.

Never thought it would lead to what I am collecting now knife wise, but it did teach me to keep my mind open :D.

Tai is as original as he is traditional.

Original in that he chooses shapes and designs, materials and textures, techniques and processes, that earn him a 'master among masters' in the forged knife world. He happily works alongside ABS mastersmiths and understands their stature, but just as happilly dismisses his own need for such a title.

Traditional in his stark handmade tools that he fabricates, and processes of build and forging that have a 'frontier' quality to them.

To acquire a taste for his knives is correct. To lose that taste is VERY hard, once you enjoy a sip.... :D

Tai Goo is indeed an undisputed master. But he's losing me here. Is it a meat clever, a knife of the south seas, or just a strange design? Guess I'll have to wait and see, but I admit, so far I prefer his earlier designs. And, I hope no one says I have little sophisication, I guess, as in all things, it's in the eye of the the holder.

Hadn't thought of that one. I don't care for the design at all. I do however, respect immensely, the skills that are going into this knife, and the appreciation that Keith has for it.

I don't like sunfish patterns, elephant toenails, laguioles, spear points, or my most hated of all time, and would like to see eradicated from the face of the planet, Green River Skinners. But.......there are a whole bunch of people that do like these patterns, and as has been pointed out many times, wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same knives?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

This is going to look good by virtue of this blade style.

Keith, will it have a ferrule or buttcap?

A meat cleaver, hmmm? Don't see any resemblance to one myself.

As I stated, this is a design that is going to elicit varying opinions on its appearance. To tell you the truth, I could live with being the only person that thought it looked great.

Sorry, I was posting at the same time you were.

Yes, it will have a ferrule and a pommel. Both will be made from high purity silver just like the guard.

I'm looking forward to the finished piece. This is going to be nice.

I'm not able to see the pictures,... not sure if it's a computer problem or a site based problem.. there's nothing! (and I have the gold membership.) Is anyone else having this trouble too?

2knife, I have no problems seeing the pictures. Can you see the pictures in the other threads?.

I wonder if your pop-up blocker is causing it.

On your IE menu bar, go to "Tools" then "Pop-up Blocker" then "Turn off Pop-up Blocker"
