Taking the dive into knife making

Very nice! Wish I had A KMG :) Do you have a checkering file by any chance? It would allow you to put really nice jumping on your knives in only a few minutes...not to aggressive either. They often come in 18-30 tpi Depending on how aggressive you want it to be.

Haven't tried it yet, I personally don't like jimping on knives, and oddly enough no one has requested it on their knives either. Aesthetics wise, I very much like the look of it though.

Got to sneak in a little grinding before heading out to work.

Love me some Gators

One of my weird steps, is doing the flats first, then taping and grinding in the edge. After I will hit it with a quick pass on the first grinder to get a crisp bevel transition, light hand finish and glue the handles.

Gotcha, the files aren't cheap either.... Around $40 for a nice one that is 6 inches long and a half inch wide. You can get them on amazon if you are Ever looking. They are even more expensive at Jantz.

I'm a sucker for tools even if i don't use them right away. Dang the Internet! Lol

Some pretty unique wood. Going to be teamed up with a carbon fiber bolster, and canvas liners.
Wood is pitted Hawaiian Koa with some really nice figure hiding beneath it.

Aren't we all when we have the funds? HAha, good luck with the shop and knives man ;)

Looks good! I love this thread, and I appreciate the time you've put in to make it and hope you keep it goin as long as you continue to make knives. ;) Man that hunk of CF musta cost a pretty penny! It'd be sweet to see some of it used on hidden tang blades, if you're up to it   lol .. Man I really wanna get one of the DD-work rests (I think that's what they're called..?), do ya think the guy maken them would sell the "fixture" with just the "extreme" angle rest by itself? Anyway, keep it up man, you've come a long way in a short time period! :)

BTW, love your newer logo, it really helps to make the knife look more clean & classy and "professional." :)

Thanks Paul,

Yes it cost a pretty penny, and yes I plan to make a hidden tang with it.

Yes they are called DD-Workrests, great add on to the grinder. and Don the maker is fantastic to deal with, very nice guy. I'm not sure what he would sell separately, but he does seem very accommodating.

I don't have a newer logo, the name in cursive is the customers name. I like my dirty looking Mud logo. :)

lol Please don't take my logo comment as insulting your "Mud" one or trying to imply you should change it! I actually really like the "graffiti tag" style it has, plus it's more unique. I've just been looking to buy some "sig" type stencils recently for myself so it happened to catch my eye. Sorry, didn't mean to word it "quite" like I did. :o And thanks for the work rest info, I'll have ta get in contact with him. :)

Been needing a new drill press a while now, after my HF benchtop press started really bogging down on steel. And the power switch broke off- which I initially had duct taped back on. Ended up being so weak I could stop the press with my hand. Matt described my press as being so weak, it couldn't even break itself. lol

SO I went big, knowing I planned to make/work on more than just knives.
Nearly broke my back rolling this beast on a dolly to my backyard shop

Here it is waiting for the motor head to be attached.

I couldn't find anyone to help me lift this 150lb+ chunk of metal, then remembered I had an engine hoist.

Thank goodness it was able to reach! Turns out even if I was strong enough, I couldn't lift that high due to my lack of height.

Also quickly learned I need a small stool or stepladder just to change the speeds because my arms can't reach.

While I was putting the tank together, some other packages came in.

I'm kinda jigging that dig  :D

Man that drill pres is a beast!! How tall would you say is it? My little HF press is still chugga chuggin away, but a drill doctor is pretty much a must with it, least for me. A nice drill press would deffinitly be nice to have, extra power + slower speeds = faster & cleaner holes.

Even though I forced myself to stop using a jig and to get better at freehand grinding (I still suck cause I take too long inbetween knives that my muscles forget how to lol) I'm still pretty intereted ta see that jig all set up... looks like another well made grinding accessory by "DD" :)

yes it is, lol. Just under 6' I think.

My benchtop HF press, only gets down to 600 something rpm. Not ideal for steel.

I'm on board with whatever helps me do what I need to do. The jig will mostly help when I get to folding knives. I do jump between free hand and some kind of jig though, won't lie about that.

i'd like to hear how the new grinding jig works out for you

There's nothing wrong with jigs and I use Bruce Bump's File guides on most every knife but I still suggest that you learn how to grind flat bevels & hollows free hand first!

What it did for me is give a better understanding of how steel works/grinds which increased my design ideas for my blade patterns.

I know a few that started with jigs and they have never really tried much that's new and different since.
Just my not so humble opinion, for what its worth.

completely agree here,
I'm just curious how well the DD angle plate jig works out. :-)
