Talk me out of a Spyderco (if you can)

I wouldn't even try , they are super bang for buck . Sal and now Eric have always been innovators and experimenters , mostly with good results . Cant beat much of there stuff for the price point . It's the knife I always point converted sheepl towards .

The ones with nylon handles look like crap. Looks like it will break if it is gripped too tight too.

Okay, here's my attempt to talk you out of it...

Most of them have blade shapes that look like the head of a reptile or bird, the hole being the eye (With the native, which I intend to get, being one exception. No big hump that looks like an eye socket in a skull).

I don't like a fish on my dinner plate looking at me as I eat it and I don't like my knife looking at me as I cut the head off of a fish...

Ah, lest you forget, they are fiberglass reinforced!;)

Having owned and abused the heck out of an FRN Endura (old school Endura, no liners, purchased in 1996), I can honestly tell you your worries are completely unfounded, not to mention a little far out in left field.

Why don't you post a video on youtube of you breaking an FRN (that's Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon, the ones you said "look like crap") Spyderco with your ninja grip of death? I'd love to see it.:D

ROTFLOL!
That has got to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen posted on these forums!:D

If I had a sig line, that would be in my sig line, with your permission of course. Thank you for the laugh, Vee3, I needed it!:D

is there another brand I should be looking at in the $100 price range?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: some may suggest Kershaw and perhaps Benchmade or even (Heaven forfend!) CRKT, but for sheer cut for the buck (as apposed to bang for the buck), they can't touch the top notch materials and design of the Spydercos, especially in the $40-100 price range.
And also, can I buy a $40-50 Spydy and still get the same quality as the Cricket?
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yes, even if you buy a $100 Spydy.

The Stretch and the Manix and the Mini Manix are the only Spydercos I recommend or buy for people. Not because the others aren't great. Just because I think those are the best for most people's needs.

Unless, someone can appreciate the "coolness factor" and then I buy them a Waved Delica or Endura.

Gee, that's odd as the only SOG I ever had came with aluminum handles and "looked tough", until you actually used it and the blade slapped back and forth like a slinky, the AO spring broke, and the lock(with the safety engaged as well) could be overcome and closed by fairly light pressure. And this all happened within a month of owning the thing, for real.

Maybe you shouldn't judge by "looks" alone...

Spyderco's lineup can match any other company, dollar for dollar, in the biz. I don't doubt that for a second.

I've actually thought the same thing for some of them, but I like it. Once I realized how comfortable they were, they immediately looked very attractive to me. I have a serrated Jester and I swear it looks like an aligator, my girlfriend thinks it's cute and wants it. I'm still thinking about giving it to her.

I've always thought the Poliwog looked ugly, but then just yesterday I put it in my hand- damn that thing is comfortable! Looks pretty now...

Ok. It still looks like crap! I know it has fiberglass in it. It still looks breakable. I repeat looks breakable. Many consider looks to be a major reason for buying a knife. The nylon ones generally have the cheaper steel and a ho hum design too IMO.

I am not going to waste my money on one of those and get a sweet looking babe to break the handle in her grip for you to see it (hyperbole).

I'd take a knife that isn't as pretty and WORKS well over a "pretty" knife that is so-so on performance anyday, but that's just me. I'd hardly call VG-10 "ho hum", either. At least when it's compared to AUS-8 that is offered on plenty of SOGs. Based on your criteria, I'd stick with SOG.

Name 'em! If you're going to make a blanket statement (you used the tem "generally") like that, you should be able to back it up. So, please, tell me which FRN-handled Spyderco models have the "cheaper steel"? I bet you can't!;)

You put the "sweet looking babe" part in there, but I have a feeling you know darn well that no FRN Spyderco can be broken by the grip of even an above average strength man. If you think I'm wrong, proove it. Even your favorite company, Cold Steel, would at least attempt to back up their claims on video.;)

Maybe if you put one on a long lanyard, and twirled it over your head, you'd appreciate them.

The knives in my EDC rotation are the Native III, Delica 4 and a Mini-Griptilian- all are absolutely great knives (IMHO) and all 3 cost less than $150. If I had to name a favorite right now, it would be the Mini-Grip, but ask me two weeks ago and it would've been the Native, next week, maybe it'll be the Delica, like I said, they're all great!

Enjoy the process, you can't really go too wrong with most of the advice you're getting here.

Spydercos SUCK
......the money right outta your wallet, cause like Lays potato chips, you just can't stop at one.;)

Good try, michaelmcgo, but when the original poster clicks on your profile and sees that your favorite knife is a Spyderco Manix, he's gonna be kinda confused.:D
