Talk me out of buying a small Sebenza

get something half the price, will preform just as well in every way a knife can preform. A sebenza is a luxury item, like a 300000$ car, nobody needs one, they just get one because they have they want one and have no monetary worries.

Procede with caution. Knives are a progressive addiction. At first, spending $50 on a knife satisfys the lust. Next, you need to spend $100 and on and on... If you don't quit in time, you end up mortgageing the house to buy a Loveless... I kidding, but this is not far from the truth.

What do you mean "quit in time?" There is no possibility of quitting. There's a reason it's so dangerous, no one has successfully quit.

Get something twice as expensive and then you can "downgrade" to a CRK and it will seem like a bargain.

I want the knife so bad....

But 330 bucks? Holy Smokes batman...

There must be something else out there...

I actually really love this mini griptilian, it just looks very military/mall ninja. I wish they made it with classier materials...

if you look hard enough and are patient you could get it for less. for example i have seen sebenzas go for $230.

So because I haven't owned a Sebenza that makes me a fanboy of every other knife company that I ever recommend? No I have not owned one because I do not want to own one. I have handled them and it was no big deal. Just a titanium frame lock like a lot of other knives out there. And I got the under hardened "crap" from all the certificates that come with Sebenza knives that say 57 rockwell hardness. That is not hard for a folder but might be right for a fixed blade using S30V that was going to be used as a chopper. 59 is about average for stainless folders with a trend towards going harder (60+) which for a cutting tool is where they should be hardened. So if it is hardened to less than average, yes it is under hardened.

Nothing you said makes me a 'fanboy' and just shows that you don't like when someone disagrees with you. So what if he has a grip and so what if I said a Sage is 95 or 99% of a Sebenza?

Edit: I just looked for a Sebenza certificate saying 57 rockwell and the couple I found said 58-59. I know I have seen them multiple times before that said 57 so I guess it was rare or they are hardening them more now. But 58-59 is not soft and is what they should be although I personally would like them a little harder.

all mine say 58-59.

Sorry, can't help talk you out of getting one - bought my first small Sebenza last weekend at a gun & knife show. Didn't want to spend that much money without handling one first.

It is fantastic. Fit, finish, design, materials are all excellent. No regrets on the cost and my thoughts on which knives I was planning to collect has changed as a result.

Ordered an Umnumzaan yesterday :-).

Did the OP succeed in being convinced out of a Sebenza?

I'm here to help!

Best knife you'll ever own. Fingers not crossed. Been carrying mine for hmm, over two years now, I think.

I own 20+ knives, and I can find something I don't like about each and every one of them, including the Sage 2 and Benchmade 940. I consider this a personal problem, not that there is anything inherently wrong with any of these blades. I have no doubt that I would find something not to like about the Sebenza, or any other upscale knife. Maybe it would be the pocket clip, the weight, the balance, etc. Maybe I just wouldn't like the way it feels in my hand. Whatever. Knowing that, I won't risk being disappointed. I'm sure the Sebenza is a fine piece of workmanship, but I can get a healthy dose of buyer's remorse for a lot less money.

I spent $350 on a knife once.

Then I spent $400...

Then $1000

Don't do it, it's a slippery slope.

(how's that?)

They're nice. I've held them and fondled them a couple of time. They're very nice.

Are they $350 nice to me? Nope. I think you can get way nicer things for the same and sometimes less money.

For example:
I bought this for $270

While that might not be your thing there are plenty other options out there for that amount of money.

The Sebenza is an amazing feat of enginering I'm told. I believe them but I'm not an engineer and I'm very unlikely to notice the difference between one and a knife that costs perhaps half that like the Spyderco Sage II, or that new ZT/Hinderer collabaration.

Sebenza's are cool for those who like them and worth it to those that it's worth it for.

I'm not one of them and maybe you're not either.

In any case I'd suggest handling one before you buy.

Thinking outside of the box....

  • Have you looked at the custom folders here?
  • Recover the mini grip with some classier material?

Best case scenario I would have a griptilian, made out of sebenza materials and finishes....

would be amazing.

well when i think sebenza i think Ti RIL, if you had a griptillian with Ti handles it wouldnt really impact performance. and you can get an S30V griptillian.

This isn't directed at you, however I pulled this as a quote. I compltetely disagree. I have CRKTs, Kershaws, Spydies, William Henrys and Lone Wolfs. Let's take WH out of the mix because IMO they are in a legue completely on there own. Their 275$ knife IMP is made better than others costing 2x that, but I digress.

Of the rest I would say Lone Wolf stands out as the best made, above and beyond Spydie, CRKT, Kershaw and all the rest. They feel better, they preform better, IMO they hold an edge better (as well as came out of the box with a better edge). You can tell just by looking at them that they cost more than myu others, and once you pick them up and open them you can feel how much better they are.

I have never handled a Sebenza, but if it is anything like my other higher end knives, there will definately be a difference between it and the ones that cost half.

If you dont want to spend the 300+ on a sebenza, consider the following similar knives:

Buck Mayo TNT
Spyderco Sage 2
Benchmade Mini Skirmish
Bradley Alias 2

There really is no substitute for a sebenza as far as F&F and pride of ownership, however those are all made of the same materials and are great knives for the money.
