The area I hunt its rare to take a shot more than 40 yards or so unless i'm hunting power lines. I just think it would be fun to take a buck with a Desert Eagle for the heck of it. Talk me out of buying one Friday. I think I just want an excuse to buy a DE.

Please tell me you don't actually do this....

You don't need no stinkin' Desert Eagle. There, I tried. Just remember to post pics when you get it :).

What's wrong with hunting power lines as long as its within the law? In my neck of the woods, there aren't many clearings besides power lines. Powerlines are private land, so unless posted, are fair game.

230 grains,
I've shot two deer with a Smith and Wesson 629 .44 magnum with an 8 3/8 inch barrel. The gun(which I no longer have) was the same exact gun that Dirty Harry wielded except mine was stainless. I used open sights on both occasions. Don't mean to toot my own horn but I was a very good shot and I was fast with that gun- one of the deer that I shot was a young pointer buck. I shot him 5 times really fast and hit him 3 times in the heart-he was only about 20 yards away when I shot the first shot and he jumped a couple times toward me and ran right past me within arms length-(I was on the ground) as I shot him 2 more times---he had no idea where I was! Then I shot him one more time when he stopped on the other side of me sending him down into a creek bottom. I shot one more time to finish him which I probably didn't need to do but my adrenaline was pumping so hard that I couldn't help myself. The other deer that I took with that gun was a large doe-I shot her in the heart from 30 yards and she ran about 10 yards and fell over and died.
Why did I tell you this? To let you know that HANDGUN HUNTING IS AWESOME!(in case you haven't used a handgun to hunt before) It's almost as good as taking one with a bow........ BUT..... I'm sure it's no where as good as taking one with a BUSSE BATTLE MISTRESS, which I have yet to do! Maybe a Gladius would be a better option, what do you think?
Now as far as a Desert Eagle-I've never owned one so I can't recomment whether to get one or not. I've heard mixed reviews. If you have the money and it does look like you appreciate the 1911 then I would invest in a Wilson Combat Hunter 1911 in the .460 Rowland caliber. It's got .44 magnum power blasting out of a beefed up 1911. It will run you about $3000 plus but Wilsons in my opinion are worth every penny-you won't realize this until after you shoot one in case you haven't. They're super accurate and super smooth.

Sorry bud, I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you literally "hunted" powerlines as in shot at them :o.

OH LOL.

I didn't get why you were upset I hunted power lines haha. Nah, I don't hunt power lines, I'd imagine they don't taste all that great.

Thanks for the input! I've never hunted with a handgun before, but i'm pretty eager to try. No time to get out for muzzle loader or bow season this year so I need to have some fun during rifle season.

I WISH I could pick up a Wilson Combat Hunter, I love a high end 1911, I'm an Ed Brown fan myself, but I can't justify 3k right now for something that would only be used to hunt.

DE 44 mag is a nice big gun with a large grip. I had to use premium (ie. 'hot') ammo for it to function properly especially when new. Extra mags are pricey too. It is a heavy gun, best carried in a chest or shoulder rig, but it is also fun to shoot too.

You can find some good deals on barely used DE's as many do not realize the above when they purchase

Personally, I would much rather shoot my Python ;)

There - just talked you out of it :p:D

I prefer the Ruger Blackhawk when hunting with the .44 mag. I have taken several deer with a variety of handguns and it is a "Blast".

Talk you out of it???? I want to join you. Post pics of the DE when you get it and good luck in the woods.

Mate, hunt for food, not just for the hell of it. Sorry but killing for the sake of trying out different methods to kill defenceless animals seems really ******* lame to me. Just my opinion which you may not give a ****, but who cares, right?

That's one big and heavy handgun 230. I have friends that own 44's and 50 cal De's. I've owned and shot quite a few smith 44's over the years. The De is the only 44 that i've shot that you can actually rapid fire and keep on target. The drawback for me is the weight of it. You can get a rifle just about in the same weight class. But with a red dot scope would make a good deer pistol if your not shooting to far. I don't know if i've talked you out of it or not. Really you should see if you can shoot one to see if you like it or not. But will get the job done i'm sure. Good luck with your decision and hunting Mike. ;)

Heavy gun.

Lame trigger vs. a S&W 44 mag.

Heck, for the price of a DE, you could get a Colt Anaconda.

Handgun hunting: Yes

Desert Eagle: No

Unless, like, yer, um, tryin to compensate for something. ;)

The cool factor is there, but I'd vote Anaconda. I just saw the one you need at the gun show last weekend. I think it's called the Hunter model. It's camo with a scope and a long, long barrel, comes in it's own case. Very, very nice. Google it. Or buy a Custom Shop 629, or a Single Action.

I understand the "need". I've been wanting a Ruger Mini since the 80's. I blame the A Team. I've passed on a couple of good deals, because everyone I've talked to says that I'll be disappointed and I tend to believe them.

That would be the Realtree Anaconda - comes with 8" barrel, scope, and case

Those usually go for alot more than a stainless 6"

Personally I believe in hunting in a manor that takes the animal with as little suffering as possible. With a rifle, generally it's one shot. Same with a bow. If you feel confident enough to take the animal in a humane way with a pistol, then go for it. Otherwise, get you one of those decoys and blast away for fun.

If I was going to get anything in 44mag it would be a revolver. Have you been talked out of it yet?

if you are good enough and can get a close shot[20-30yds] go for it.i think it would be a blast.
