Talk me out of taking a white tail with a .44 mag DE this season.

I would never buy a Desert Eagle. They are clumsy, bulky affairs- better suited to the silver screen than to the real world. If you want a cannon, get a S&W .460. They're more accurate, and much more powerful than the .44 DE. Plus they're multi-caliber cabable, a much more useful gun, IMHO. You can kill the heck out of a deer with supreme confidence with a .460.

I vote For hunting with the 44mag- BUT with the Ruger Super Redhawk instead of the DE.

Buy A S&W 500 nice shooter & I would love to trade you out of it when the season is over ;)

I'm sure you're using a handgun to humanely harvest deer the same way you would with a traditional rifle. A semiauto (rifle or pistol) for hunting isn't something I'd do, though I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I have a Smith & Wesson 629 44 mag. I gotta say that my dad's Ruger Red Hawk in 44 mag is more comfortable to shoot hot rounds through. To me the grip shape of the Ruger makes the recoil push where a Smith revolver snaps. I've heard a Bisley shape makes recoil even easier to handle but those are always single action. A big guy like you probably doesn't care about recoil, but I like to practice with 50 rounds instead of 15. They both have got to have better accuracy and reliability than a DE. Colt's Anacondas are too expensive now, but still a better investment than a DE IMO.

230,
Just make sure you check your hunting laws and make sure there is no restrictions on mag capacity. Lots of places have them and may require altering your mags to make them capable of only holding a set number of rounds.
Other than that, I cannot come up with any good reasons to change your mind. Sorry Bro. I have had and shot a few DE and they are fun.

Regardless of what choice you make, best of luck with your hunting season.

Mate, hunt for food, not just for the hell of it. Sorry but killing for the sake of trying out different methods to kill defenceless animals seems really ******* lame to me. Just my opinion which you may not give a ****, but who cares, right?

I am hunting for food, but I also enjoy hunting, and the handicap that hunting with a handgun gives you. I can sit in a field in a comfy chair with a .270 and pick off deer all day, but in the end, I may as well went to a butcher shop and bought a bunch of meat.

That's one big and heavy handgun 230. I have friends that own 44's and 50 cal De's. I've owned and shot quite a few smith 44's over the years. The De is the only 44 that i've shot that you can actually rapid fire and keep on target. The drawback for me is the weight of it. You can get a rifle just about in the same weight class. But with a red dot scope would make a good deer pistol if your not shooting to far. I don't know if i've talked you out of it or not. Really you should see if you can shoot one to see if you like it or not. But will get the job done i'm sure. Good luck with your decision and hunting Mike. ;)

I've never fired the .44 DE, but have the .50 AE. It's a big, heavy gun, but weight is of little concern.

Personally I believe in hunting in a manor that takes the animal with as little suffering as possible. With a rifle, generally it's one shot. Same with a bow. If you feel confident enough to take the animal in a humane way with a pistol, then go for it. Otherwise, get you one of those decoys and blast away for fun.

I can keep it in the kill zone all day with a rifle, a shotgun, a bow, a musket or a tomahawk. I'll have no problem dispatching a deer humanely with a .44 mag as long as one crosses my path

Well I don't really see a problem with it if you are a good shot. I am not a great shot with a pistol so I would feel pretty bad if I gave the deer a nasty gut-shot and it got away and suffered. Magnum research also makes a large caliber revolver too that might be better for hunting.

Buy it in .50AE, might as well get the real thing

I'm not that impressed with .50AE. If I were a reloader I would consider it, but alas, I have no time to reload.

I vote For hunting with the 44mag- BUT with the Ruger Super Redhawk instead of the DE.

I have considered one as well.

That's another consideration, a friend at work just picked up one for this season and another a 460. Both comically awesome revolvers.

A lot of states do have mag restrictions, luckily NH has no magazine size restriction, but rather how many rounds can be loaded in that magazine.

I had to email fish and game to get confirmation on this for coyote hunting, as I had no 5 round AR mags and the answer they gave me is that magazine capacity doesn't matter, as long as there is only five rounds loaded into it.

In the end, what I see on Friday will determine what I hunt with, if I don't see anything I like I wont buy anything new. Hell, I could leave with anything from a .338 lapua to a new .45/70 or .450 marlin lever action.

Talk you out of it??? No way! I double-dog dare ya!!! ;)

Go for it, man. Sounds like a lot of fun.

totally agree with post/fact that DE triggers are ,at best, *almost* acceptable & that a s&w 460 platform would be a better choice ( can use 460/ 454 casull / 45 colt ammo with no mods )

my suggestion : marlin 1894 cowboy 20" in 44 mag or 45 colt

If I go marlin, I'm goin .45/70 guide gun or .450 marlin.

The area I hunt its rare to take a shot more than 40 yards or so unless i'm hunting power lines. I just think it would be fun to take a buck with a Desert Eagle for the heck of it. Talk me out of buying one Friday. I think I just want an excuse to buy a DE.

BUY it..... heck... at 40 yards its like takin candy from a baby with a 44.

I've shot 5 deer with my 44 Redhawk... that was back in my younger years. Now I plan to get back into it and use my Ruger Flattop 44 Special loaded with some heavy lead.

Go for it and post results!

44Mags are great.

Back when I had time to handload and other things, I found the Rugers to be more versatile than other handguns. This is not just true from a power standpoint, but also in bullet selection. I say go for a longer cylidered Super Redhawk.

IMO, .44 mag from a handgun is sufficient to humanely and effectively take deer. However, like some others here, I feel that the DE is more about show than anything else, and that you could get a "better" gun for less money. Of course, what is "better" is in the eye of the beholder. Either way, hopefully your hunt will be an enjoyable and successful one.

I say get whatever floats your boat. The DE is railed so you can mount glass, so I think it would do fine for hunting. Personally, I am not a revolver person. So heck yeah, the DE would be cool to take a deer with.
