Talk me out of taking a white tail with a .44 mag DE this season.

I say get what ever gun makes you happy.
I have a S&W Mod.#29 & a DE MK.VII IN 44 Mag both guns have taken Deer.
Each has a plus & minus side.
S&W is fairly lite 4In. mod. can carry all day and hardly notice its there.
minus side with standard 240gr.hunting rounds muzzle blast and Recoil are stingingly wicked.
DE MK.VII downside as mentioned in earlier posts its heavy about twice the weight of a 1911
Plus side. Accurate, sights are regulated with 240gr.bullet for 100yrd
IT will keep rounds in a 5in. circle at 100yrd. from a steady rest.
due to the weight and sealed chamber, muzzle velocity is higher then the
4iN. S&W. being gas opperated recoil is mild, flash is still hefty
one other down side to the DE is that due to having polygonial (SP)Rifleing like the Glock and a gas system cast round can't be used.
so no cheap practice ammo in the off season

I've owned a DE before and it was extremely accurate and reliable, and fun of course! I'd say do it! Maybe get the extended barrel...

For the price of the Desert Eagle,

I would definitely recommend that you get a revolver.

I do like Desert eagles. I almost traded into one a while back, in .50. You can switch out barrels too for different calibers.

My advice, honestly, would be the S&W .460. Such a versatile caliber. You can shoot .45LC, .454 mag, and .460 S&W. With the full house .460 ammo with the flex tips, you are actually pushing rifle energy and they perform great out to 200 yards or so.

Nothing on the continent, or really anywhere in the world you could not hunt with one.

The S&W .500 mag may push a slightly bigger bullet, but has no where near the flexibility, or options for ammo. And does not match the velocity of the .460.

One word of caution, Pleas, for the love of all that is holy keep your digits and other bits away from the cylinder gap! You can actually blow the tip of a finger off if you get it right up there.

I have seen cylinder gap blast burns in normal revolvers and they burn and hurt. My uncle who had gorilla hands did it with a .357 mag, and it pushed the still burning power into his thumb and gave a nasty pitted burn.

With the big uns, you can actually take the end of your finger all the way off.

The desert eagle is fun, but no where near as practical. Very very heavy, thick, big grips, and the trigger is not as good as most any revolver you will find.

It is very limited on ammo as well. You can only shoot jacketed ammo. Lead will foul the gas system, and it specifically says that it won't be covered under warranty if you shoot lead ammo, as it will foul and stop working.

What that means, in practical terms is that tons of great heavy loads specifically tailored to hunting (think hard cast "Elmer" bullets, or Buffalo Bore etc) are off limits out of the Desert Eagle.

Also, any ammo that is not in the "Goldie Locks" zone in terms of power, will not generate enough pressure to cycle the action. Meaning, there will be all kinds of great Jacketed ammo that while safe to shoot in the action (won't plug the gas system) will actually not cycle the action at all.

Just my two cents.

there is zero cool in a DE. Too big, crappy sights, too heavy, expensive mags, appears in rap videos. all negative. get a nice wheel gun build for the purpose like a ruger, colt or smith. or go full class and get a freedom arms single action.

KD, there's an aftermarket "plug" for the lock.

The big wheel-guns are very capable of taking deer size game out to 100 yards.

The area I hunt its rare to take a shot more than 40 yards or so unless i'm hunting power lines. I just think it would be fun to take a buck with a Desert Eagle for the heck of it. Talk me out of buying one Friday. I think I just want an excuse to buy a DE.

Man, I just sold my .50 AE.

You will love it.

41 magnum, when loaded right it is better than a lot of 44 mag rounds.

Revolvers lack the intimidation of a Desert Eagle, but a good round is a good round.

Just a thought.

I had one of those as a teenager too, that thing was awesome. I never really did anything with mine, but it was still cool.

Me too man, I swung mine around once and knocked something off my dresser, and that was the end to my manriki days. Maybe i'll hunt deer with one.

If you want something classy to shoot your 44mags out of try the S&W 629 classic

Now there's a man who USES his Busse knives!

Funny story: About 8-9 years ago, I HAD to have a DE. .44 mag b/c it was more practical than 50.

My buddy just got a vintage Mod 29 and we decided to hit a new range I had just joined. We head down to the indoor range and one of hte officers of the club was there.

"Whoa! What's that?"

"A DE."

"What caliber is that?"

"44. Like the 29 over there."

"Well, you can use the 29, but you can't use that in here."

This guy was AN OFFICER OF THE CLUB and fell for the Evil Looking Gun argument. LOL

He was OK with ALL our ammo (Lead and jacketed) but not with my dangerous looking weapon. LOL

We went to the outdoor range instead. I shot that thing once - about 3 mags full. . . and sold it. Heavy and terrible (for the price and billing) trigger.
