OK, before we get going, im a 17 year old male, live in Canada, and i consider my self mature. Now on with the story.....

I as doing a Bio lab and the razor blade i had to cut open the pig with was dull as all get out, so i take out my leatherman and used the clippoint blade, needless to say the piggy opened right up, but my teacher walks over and gives me dirty looks, so i slip the leatherman back into my pocket and pretend nothing happened. After class she calls me over, and says "young man why do you have a knife in school" i replied "well the ones you gave us just wernt good enough so i brought my own" needless to say she scowled and i went on to explain that i carry it only as a tool and using it as a weapon was the furtheset thing from my mind. In the end she let me go, and i didnt get in trouble, tho it was close. I still carry it to school but no one notices me using it anymore.

So my point is, just because im 17, people look at me funny when i prouduce a prefectly usable tool from my pocket, I find this rather hurtful, to be watched, just because I have a knife

I don't agree with it - but if you had that knife in a US school, odds are you would have been in some trouble. Too many wack jobs doing stupid things with guns and knives are making it hard for the rest of us to go about our daily lives. Granted, a leatherman is different than a 4" folder, but I still think you'd be in a lot of trouble in most schools in the USA.

Nope, no wepons of any kind. but being homeschooled & private schooled, i can. most people dont care at my school, so most of the boys do cary knives...

The only exception that I can think of (and this is like 8 years ago) was the kids that were in the "farm shop," they could have like a 3" blade or something for whatever it is they do in "farm shop," (this is Montana I'm talking about), but they were seperate from the rest of the high school.

Every boy carried a knife to school and everywhere else, too. We didn't cut each other up, but we did "play with them" a lot. ;-) I can't remember ever hearing about any boy getting in trouble at school with his knife. Fist fights were another thing entirely, though. I always went to school in the South, and some might say we have always had a knife culture here. It goes way back to our frontier roots I'm sure.

Your lucky man, when I was in HS I couldnt have ANYTHING not even multi-tools. I would have been suspended and maybe even expelled. Now I agree with you and think that you were in the right. But there are too many @$$holes out there that have ruined it for good people. Dont worry soon you will be out of HS and able to carry whatever. You may still get looks(I do) for carrying knives but at least you wont get suspended:rolleyes:

Yea, this is my last year, Then i can carry my belt knives:D, And if my Bio teacher really wanted to she could have gotten me in serious trouble. Im pretty sure knives and the like arent allowed in my school, so i guess im in silent protest

Do a lot of you guys really pack big ass knives around town and such? I've got a lot of big knives, but I don't pack them around when I go grocery shopping... I've got a concealed weapons permit, and generally like my "weapons" to be concealed! I draw as little attention to myself as possible...

Same here in Mississippi, Dr. Mudd. We could carry a knife, but that was twenty some odd years ago. Now, I'm a school teacher, students better not have a knife at school nowadays because if they do and they're caught with it
it's an automatic expusion for the year. We, the teachers, can carry them, but sometimes I wonder if I should have one here or not, you never know how some of the kids will react.

Many schools in the US have zero tolerance policys. They will expell you for having anything pointy, including nail clippers with the file on it. Will also suspend/expell you for having or giving someone cough drops, aspirin and the like. This is "drug dealing" now. They will also suspend/expell you for having presciption meds if you don't give them to the nurse to give to you. Frigging idiots.

in a belt pouch you can carry whatever length blade knife you want in my state. you can also carry a pistol in the open or in your glove box with no permit. but schools don't allow any sort of blades to be carried by anyone. too many young teens today misuse weapons. in the 60's and 70's boys seemed to fight with their fists or not at all. it was unheard of for a guy to fight unfair. even with all the new rules you still hear about a kid stabbing another in school a few times a year. some reason clubs, knives and guns are used more now to settle fights. of course knife fights used to be common out in the rural areas back in the 20's and 30's. my grandpa always said that on Saturday night men would go into town to watch the knife fights between families that had great hatred for the other. he always said he thought tv had gave people something else to do at night. maybe things just repeat who knows? it used to be a common thing for a knifer to hold the blade in his hand thumb and index finger just allowing the blade tip to poke out. then a person that wasn't much of a threat and needed to be taught a "lesson" would be cut up with the tip. (more of what the old timers have told me about knife fighting years ago)

I think that most states allow open carry - but why would you, unless you were on your way to go hunting or hiking or something like that?

Now,
Like I say, we are in a rural setting. So, I have seen a few boys that I am pretty sure had knives on them. I think my reaction would depend on the individual student. If I had a known trouble maker pull a knife out in the same scenario that you described I would have immediately turned him in, BUT if it was a good student, I would have pulled him aside and told him or her that it might be in their best interest to put the knife up and don't bring it back to class. I have never been in the situation you described so I don't really know what I would do. But I am pretty sure I would follow procedure, remember the US is a lawsuit happy society and I am the ONLY one in that classroom that has a family to support and put bread on the table. Kids talk and I am sure they would let it be known all over school that "Mr. S let so&so use a pocket kniffe in his class" then I would receive a visit from the principal, then the parents would call, then the school board.............. I shudder to think about it!!;)

Good point, i forgot to mention that, im about as rural as it gets, so im sure that had an influance, and i suppose im a good student, dont get in trouble, so i see what your saying.

I'm only 2 years older then you, and i carry a knife (several) to school every day( my EDC and my LM wave).when i was 17 and in high school i just carried the Wave. but i used it all the time in class. all my teachers new i carried it, and several times ive even had them ask me if they could use it. just find it a little funny that your teacher dislikes the fact that you have a knife (which about 99% of teachers would) and mine love the fact that i had one. just my .02!

Moonshine, I hate to tell you. But, a lot of us older folk get funny looks when we produce knives from our pockets, too.

Seems like the world as a whole is "blade challenged".
