Teens cant have Knives?

In my state, even the accusation of carrying a knife of any kind on school grounds will get you detained......Actually having one will get you arrested.

I graduated high school in 1995, and it was worse back then. There was a eally bad gang problem and the murder rate was very high. School officials went overboard with security.

Moonshine, I hate to tell you. But, a lot of us older folk get funny looks when we produce knives from our pockets, too.

Seems like the world as a whole is "blade challenged".

I suppose i just joined the club then:D and "blade challenged" is a very good way to put it

I remember when I was in junior high (1970s) it was common for boys to carry some kind of pocketknife; I even had a typing teacher who showed me his Buck Cadet pocketknife, which introduced me to the Buck brand. At that time, the most commonly seen were various makes of stockmans (Schrade, Buck, Camillus, etc.), scout knives, SAKs, and the occasional folding hunter. Back then, I don't remember any stabbings at all in the schools I went to, though there were plenty of fist and wrestling fights.

Nowadays in the States at least, I'll bet you could be arrested for carrying a knife magazine on a campus. But I don't think just being young necessarily makes people look at you funny when you use a knife for a mundane cutting chore. I still get that and I'm 43. People these days have become scared of everything, though it seems that fear and the subsequent greater restrictions on us have NOT made us any safer. In fact, things are getting worse, and I still haven't heard of a rampage committed by someone armed with a SAK.

I don't know of any schools in Alberta where you are allowed to carry a knife. I'm not sure about where you live, but I think you are lucky you didn't get in a whole lot more trouble than you did. It has nothing to do with being a teenager and everything to do with the laws regarding carring knives on school property.

back in the 60's and 70's my dad tells me a knife that locked open was a really big deal. there just wasn't hardly any good decent folding knifes. the buck 110 lock back created a huge stir. we have it great today.

See now here is where I disagree, Laws where i live say you can carry a knife, anywhere. However the school dosent allow it, and what do you find in highschools? Teenagers. Plus teachers are allowed to carry knives, I relize I could have gotten into alot more trouble then I did, if a kid was flipping his knife around and showing off, then i think somthing has to be done, but the point is i used my knife for school work, as a tool, the thing never leaves my pocket unless it is being put to work for a good reason. I relize its hard to tell if im a danger with the knife, but punishing someone who has a tool on hand seems allittle off handed to me

Hey GUys...

Moonshine..

First off Welcome to BF.com...

Good to see yet another Canadian here...

I got at least one knife taken every year of highschool..
I got all of them back, except for a switchblade and a small key chain push dagger.. :) So I can't complain...

I've heard horror stories of teenagers getting screwed for having plastic knives in their lunch boxes..
So I guess you had a very convincing reason and a prettycool teacher..

Were you told Not to bring it back to school ??

My son who is in grade 8,, a friend of his got suspended for buying a cap gun in town at lunch and bringing it back to school...

Incredibly stupid rules...

Had I done that in high school five years ago, I would have been expelled and possibly arrested. While I agree with you in principle on the stupidity of their reaction, consider yourself lucky.

well, your a juvenile in a school setting. like others have said, in the states that is generally a no no.

dr. mudd, times change, whether we agree or not, so do rules. when i was in high school (80's) fist fights were the preferred method as well.

today, fights are even more common than i remember, and often knives and guns find their way on to campuses and are subsequently use in those fights.
three days ago two high school students were shot at a los angeles area high school.

so now is different than 'then'. .02

Although it seems in my state(at least up near chicago) I would probably be arrested and beaten if I carried a knife in school, I know more rural schools, like mine, are much more relaxed.

Surprisingly, I only know of one kid getting in trouble for a knife when I was at school and it was only a 5 day suspension...if he wouldn't have acted like a punk he probably wouldn't have been in as much trouble.

I would never carry a knife to school much less pull it out in the middle of class, regardless what the task at hand was. People are far too paranoid now thanks to stupid moronic idiots. When I was a junior in high school some kid got suspended for having a box cutter in his car, he never even took it out, they just saw it and suspended him.

I to understand how much trouble i could have gotten into, but you see, just because of that im not gona give up carring my leatherman where ever i go. Some may call me stupid for the descision but thats the way it is

The only thing i can say here is "but the pig had to be sliced open no matter what the cost"

No she never said that, so i still carry it

Btw, thanks for the warm welcome, and hey enjoy the name, its a good one

I don't remember any rules against knives in High School . (They used to do locker searches for cigarettes, though.) Can't remember if I used to carry or not. Had a little case knife at that point. It wasn't a big deal to the school if I did.

I remember in college I took a plant identification course. We used to go on field trips to collect plants for our collections. I carried a bayonet (M7 I think from the local Army Surplus store) to dig plants out of the ground with. That way I could carry it in a sheath so that I would have both hands free to negotiate my way up hillsides. Nobody said "boo" about it.

However, that was quite a while ago. I know that the California Code now states that carrying any blade over 2.5" to school is grounds for dismissal.

Bloody shame.

ca pc 626.10 any dirk, dagger, ice pick, knife having a blade longer than 2 1/2 inches, folding knife with a blade that locks into place, a razor with an unguarded blade.... upon the grounds of, or within, any public or private school providing instruction in kindergarten or any of grades 1-12 inclusive, is guilty of a public offense... (wobbler)

dismissal would be at the discretion of the school administration. a public offense is arrestable.

Oh, must be the local school district then. My info was that it was a dismissal offence.

Thanks for the correction.

no problem. the school may have paraphrased the penal code for their own rules.

I know a number of schools in our area have stricter policies than the CA state code.

It seems very easy for a well-meaning high schooler to get in serious trouble for reasonable use of a normal tool.

Sad.

Our Canadian friend would have been suspended before the pig was half opened!

I'm 16, living in Canada, and everyday I carry my Victorinox Classic Red to school. When I use it, I do use it subtly. I try to keep on the down low and use the scissors instead of the knife as much as I can if I ever have to trim anything like a loose thread on my jacket. I use the blade in shop class all the time though to cut thin tubing, rubber, etc. and I've never gotten any strange looks probably because they're aren't a lot of sissies who enroll in a senior shop class ;)

every school i have been to has rules stricter than the penal code, rightfully so. as do businesses, sports venues, etc.

yes a 'well meaning' high schooler can get into serious trouble for use of his knife. much of the responsibility is on the student to know and follow the rules of his school. i dont find it reasonable for any student to plead ignorance. and after all, ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it.

consider the perspective of the administration. if one student is allowed to carry a leatherman, then what is to prevent the gangster from carrying a knife?

What prevents a gangster from carrying a knife:confused: ? The rules? Which gangster ever played by the rules?
