Teens cant have Knives?

I'm 16, living in Canada, and everyday I carry my Victorinox Classic Red to school. When I use it, I do use it subtly. I try to keep on the down low and use the scissors instead of the knife as much as I can if I ever have to trim anything like a loose thread on my jacket. I use the blade in shop class all the time though to cut thin tubing, rubber, etc. and I've never gotten any strange looks probably because they're aren't a lot of sissies who enroll in a senior shop class ;)

wise for a 16 year old. seems to me that while you use your knife in the appropriate area/class, you are also aware of what others might think.

as much as many of us say 'i dont care what people think', we live in the real world, where the views and opinions of others can have a profound effect on our lives.

What prevents a gangster from carrying a knife:confused: ? The rules? Which gangster ever played by the rules?

the rules give the admin or police a policy with which to search and/or arrest said gangster when he is caught with a weapon.

they dont, we have to. without such policies, there is no legal repercussion for their behavior.

to be a little clearer. it gives administrators and police another tool with which to deal with knuckleheads on school campuses, students or not.

lausd has a zero tolerance policy regarding weapons on campuses. they have to discipline, police do not, on the other hand, have to arrest in all cases.

an otherwise good student may be subject to school discipline, but may walk with a warning regarding his legal misstep. officer discretion.

Hey Guys..

Believe it or not...

I use to bring my shotgun on the bus(We'd go duck hunting after school), and kept it in my locker until I got caught..
Then I had to drop it off at the office after getting off the bus..

I Absolutely Shit you Not!

This was late 70's..

I may have been one of the few that brought the shotgun to school via the bus,, but certainly not the only one that had firearms at school in their cars...

Back then this was no big deal..

Imagine doing it now!!! Holy Cripe!!

I frequently go to my kid's schools and have on occasion carried a fixed blade, however now I usually unstrap in the truck and carry only a folder....
If we go on field trips though I usually always have a fixed blade and my PSK with me...

17 here, I carry outside of school.
Usually I just carry a lava because of its size and friendly nature. This BM 710 is alluring though.

hey eric, how you been buddy?

hunting is not generally done in los angeles where i live, in fact is illegal within city limits. :) so the culture where you grew up had much to do with you feeling comfortable taking your shotgun to school.

in ca you would have to leave your folder as well, assuming its a locking blade, in the car. also assuming you were searched and the knife was found.

again, know the laws of your city. in los angeles you would be committing a crime under los angeles municipal laws.

im not advising here, or anywhere that you dont own knives as a juvenile.

only that you know what is legal and what is not. do what you feel comfortable doing, and understand possible consequences, if any.

owning is not illegal as a minor, carry becomes tricky.

And why should simply having a knife be an offense?

In a free country the mere possesion of item X should never be considered an offense. It's what you do with it that makes the difference.

School officials shouldn't need to say "Well he had a knife..." if they can already say "well he was threatening another student" or "he was disrupting the learning environment"

I think it just boils down to the fact that we need to use blanket policies / rules / laws in order to control the small percentage of people that are unable to be responsible, and in order to protect the school. The first time some kid gets stabbed and dies in a school, the parents are going to sue the school district, especially if there were no rules / policies in place that would have "prevented" it from happening. I'm sure we can all agree that most people are well intentioned, and that back in the "good old days' we didn't have to worry about this kind of stuff - but - in the lawsuit happy USA we no longer have the luxury NOT to "cover your ass" to a seemingly ridiculous degree.

Some things confuse me. (i'm not from the USA)
1. A leatherman is considered a weapon?
2. You can carry one on the street but not to school?
3. You can get arrested for carrying a leatherman to school?

I'm glad I don't have to go to school anymore!:D

I can carry a gun on the street but not in a school. A leatherman has a knife blade on it... you don't think that could be considered a weapon?

Yes, but a lot of things can be considered a weapon...
Shoe laces, pens, pencils, scissors, cans... just to name a few.

I agree completely - I used to be a corrections officer - and all of the above were considered "contraband" (except golf pencils and bendy pens). My point is that a knife blade is commonly accepted as a "weapon" even if its intended use is a tool. There's little you can do to sway the more liberal part of society, unfortunately.

It would vary from State to state and from city to city, but in general yes to all three of your questions Jos.

I see your point diceman, but there is some contradiction. You're allowed to carry a knife (or in this case leatherman tool) on the streets. But not in school. I guess this goes for students, teachers, and all other people who enter a school.
What do you do with the knife/leatherman tool you legally carry on the street when you enter a school? How do people cut things in schools?
Once again, I get the point of needing blanket policies against lawsuits etc... but I think these "rules" are a bit hypocrite (don't know if i spelled that one correctly:o ).

Jos - I hear ya brother, I'm not saying that I AGREE with "the way things are," but I can't really change it. I've got a concealed carry permit, but I can't carry in any government building, like the post office. Don't ask my why a post office is off limits, but it is. There really isn't a good answer to "what you do" with your knife when you enter the school or other "restricted" are - I guess leave it in your car...? Its unfortunate that some things have been micromanaged to such a degree, but what can you do? Not much...

So let me get this straight :) You can't carry a knife but you can use a cafeteria knife to cut your food? or be given a razor blade to gut an animal? Can you get hot tea or coffee to throw in a face and blind? Will they allow sharp pencils or any ball-point pen? And of course chemistry class no longer is allowed to actually have chemicals for experiments!!
Man, am I glad I'm way too old for school!
I work in government buildings and they all have "weapons" all over the place--it seems the doctors can't work without scalpels and and hypodermic needles, not to mention a huge supply of poisons!
Unfortunately, thinking, because it works, has been banned by the government and most ruling bodies. Go figure

I remember reading, not too long ago, a young six year old girl got suspended for taking a plastic butter knife to school to cut her cookies at lunch. I'm glad I'm way too old for school.

Mr. Wilson

In the school I work at, we have a zero tolerance policy. It is a blanket policy which levels the playing field for all students at the school. If you were caught in our school, you would have been suspended. A second offense would put you out for the year, I believe.

I do not like blanket policies in all cases, but considering some of the awful things that can take place in schools (or anywhere), I understand this one. Parents want to feel like they are sending their kids to a safe environment. Keeping blades away from students makes it safer - even if it is only because of the minority who would threaten the environment.
