Tell Me What To Do Brothers And Sisters

Ive sent in three different "scothbrited" knives of mine for waranty work, and it never was an issue. They came back perfect with the same level of customer service..

So my whole thread was wasted on this crap?:p Thanks for sharing!

Send it to me and I will do it for you! But make it the one that's already scotched!!!! :D

Alright, alright, but not really going with the whole starburst theme! pm incoming;)

I think it would be a more accurate statement to say that even though any modification gives the manufacture the right to refuse warranty service, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will. CRK service protocol unfortunately has to cover a wide range of customers, with not all being as savvy and respectful of their tools as members on this forum. ;)

Lots of good points and meaningful perspectives to consider. For me, it boils down to 1 thing ~ Will I be happier with the knife if I mod it? If the answer is yes and you do intend to keep the knife, then do it RR84; I personally think it would look great scotchbrighted. The worse case scenario is that it's not under warranty, in which case it may not be repaired for free; but, if you've got $500 to spend on the knife, then you can probably afford to pay whatever out-of-warranty costs that may apply. Even if you don't have the funds to pay for the out-of-pocket repairs, at least you've got 50+ years to save up before it ever breaks.:D

So many good points!!!!! My sentiments EXACTLY!! I just hope it isn't the one out of several that DOES have a defect, eh it's CRK!

I always call CRK ahead of time and ask them to look at the knife. I always tell them that if it doesnt fall under warranty, its no problem, I will pay to have it fixed, and I really mean it. Theyre not going to chargre someone 30 bucks or whatever out of spite, just to do it. If its a legitimate warranty issue, theyre going to fix it. A scotchbrited handle isnt a game changer. Maybe the rules have changed, but a polite call should be given before its sent in.

I think you answered it earlier, RR...You know that you go through knives like hot steel through butter. You don't hurt 'em; you trade 'em, and quite often. I understand that also. And folks "out there" are more reluctant to buy a folder that has had the finish changed...scotch-brited...heat-treated scales for color...whatever. Buyers, I believe, are even more happy to purchase a "factory edge" than one that has been suitably sharpened with an EdgePro, and I've seen a lot of factory blades that won't shave hair. So factory seems to sell better than modified...JMHO.
Anyone that knows you, RR, will buy your "modified" knives, but the newbie might not.

RR, keep it all original. I have a feeling you are going to trade it off in the future so I wouldn't change a thing. I haven't been around for a while, my rig has been drilling way out in Butt F... nowhere. How has the 25 been holding up for ya?

I think I have cabin fever from being in camp to long.....You don't have a 25, i'm just losing my mind:confused:

Alot of varying opinions and anytime you ask an intelligent group a question your bound to get intelligent responses so unfortunately those of you on the mod side and those on the don't touch it side all make perfectly good sense.

I've traded or sold a lot of knives I never thought I would and it's become part of the thought process when getting a knife now that someday I may pass it along.

I do use my knives, but I also take care of them. Modding a knife in a way that someone could always send it to CRK and return it to factory condition seems a little less drastic, then popping holes in the scale or turning it into an auto knife.

I guess i'll know when I get it what i'll do. I appreciate everybody posting their opinions.

And Rob, i'll let you know how the 25 is in a few months when it hits my mailbox ;)

Aside from voiding the warranty, refinishing the scales will likely decrease the resale value, should you ever want or need to sell it. I would enjoy it as is.

Well looks like I can scotchbrite one startac Umnumzaan and umm, leave another startac Umnumzaan minty:D

Problem solved:thumbup:
