Tell me what you love/hate about the techno

I am contemplating pulling the trigger on the techno for a new EDC. Every time I look at one I like it more. Also wondering what would be a good alternative in the same category.

Personally I'd have no use for a 4.5mm thick blade on any folder, much less on one with a 2.5" blade. That, plus it being wrong handed, a framelock, and not having a 50/50 choil, make the Techno one Spyderco I can't see myself ever purchasing. For a knife about that size, the CF Chaparral would be my choice. Beautifully thin 2mm thick blade, fully ambi, has a 50/50 choil and doesn't wear its insides on the outside. Seriously though, the saying "different strokes for different folks" most definitely applies to knives. Am sure there are those who dearly love the Techno can can't see themselves carrying a thin bladed knife.

+Cute and people don't seem to mind it being pulled out (unlike some larger knives)
+Very stout so no worries when doing hard cuts into plastic or wood.
+Sturdy tip
+Carries very well (good clip) in both normal front pocket or watch pocket.
+Cuts well for it's blade thickness (better now that I've convex the edge)
+Great lock and very smooth action.
+Perfect fit and finish.
+Lots of cutting edge in a compact package.

-My C22 ZDP-189 CF Walker cuts better, is lighter and works better for 90% of normal folder use.
-Expensive
-In some materials the thicker blade is a bit of a draw back.
-Blue back spacer isn't as nice as an orange one (fixed that)

All in all it is one of my favorite folders and the one I grab when I need something that won't offend while still being a great folder that I feel can handle almost any cutting task.

Love that backspacer. Goes really good with the watch.

I would suggest getting it. It is a great carry knife; small, unobtrusive. CTS XHP blade comes viciously sharp. The materials are quality. It's thick and stout. The backspacer makes it look appealing to the eye. It is a little pricey. I got mine for about $160. I would say it's totally worth it. Just know that you're buying a smaller knife (2.5 inches of cutting area) but with 4mm of blade stock. Do it.

Too thick for a knife so short. It's got pretty much the same blade and handle length as a GB Air, but the Air is so much more comfortable to hold in use. The Techno and Air both barely afford a full grip, around 3 1/2 actually, and the transition from having the thick handle to nothing makes me want to choke up on the knife, which is hard, since it doesn't have a finger choil, or leave off my pinky completely off, which feels uncomfortable.

I would suggest going somewhere where you can hold it, I did and ended up not liking how it feld in the hand, I ended up with a southard flipper.

Its a beefy little knife. It carries great with the deep carry wire clip. The wide handle fills the hand well and offers good grip for its shortness. A lanyard helps with retrieval and adds something to extend the handle a bit.

If you want a stout little folder then the Techno is perfect.
If you are looking for a thin lightweight folder, then there are better options.

I like mine for how solid it feels for its size, admittedly I don't need such a heavy duty EDC, but that doesn't stop me from carrying it and liking it one bit.

I carried mine every day for over a year and used it to cut everything from 5" firehose to veggies without any issues. I've owned CRKs, Striders and Hinderers to full-on customs and think the Techno doesn't take a back seat to any of them. Despite its size, it locks in your hand(my hand, anyway) offering a secure grip and good control for fine cutting tasks. The edge itself has been very easy to maintain and I've made some pretty challenging cuts without any chipping or edge rolling. The lock on mine is very solid with little, if any, noticeable wear.

The only real issue I've had with the knife would be the clip, as I do find it can dig into the palm when gripping very hard and I actually broke my first clip when it caught on the back of my bud's couch when we were moving it.

As a stand alone EDC or smaller back-up, the Techno is awesome.

Good to hear flipe, I just took mine out from the safe to start using.

Not my photo but I had bought an Ambitious to try out because I wanted to pull the trigger on a Techno. While I liked the Ambitious very much and thought the Techno was total bling, I am generally too pragmatic to own such a thick knife.

At the end of the day, there are too many really nice Spyderco's in their lineup GBradley, Delica, Salt, Dragonfly, Stretch Caly 3.0/3.5 etc...etc.. in that blade range that I think are better suited for my purposes than the overall novelty of the rather awesome looking Techno.

The Techno is a bit of an albatross in the Spyderco lineup as its bought on looks more than the function. I won't lie it looks great and is a Ti Framelock but for me its not enough to EDC or or keep as all of my one handers are for utility and not EDC'ing.

PS The Ambitious fills the hand up great btw, its stout and feels very secure. I was always afraid of it falling out of my pocket though when sitting down as its such a small folder it disappears in your pocket.

he Persistence overall feels better. The Tenacious felt great too, probably the best of the three, but I got rid of that one as I prefer smaller knives.

I just got mine on Saturday. Materials and finish are top notch. I "needed" a <3" blade because I'm in Los Angeles County every once in a while and larger is illegal. It's awesome, but too stout for me to carry (in pocket only--no clipping to pocket--another California thing) in suits or dress pants. It'll be one of my weekend/weeknight items.

Planning to get a Gayle Bradley Air to go along with my ProTech Stinger (CA-legal auto) for dress duty.

I ordered a carbon smooth Cuscadi backspacer to customize a bit.

The knife is awesome, and I'll never get rid of it. Prices are getting lower, too--I paid $150-something and it's a value.

Only cons are that I would've made the blade length exactly 2.5" instead of 2.55" due to blade length limits in some municipalities and the handle a little longer (3.75" instead of the current 3.43") to get a better grip.

I love my Techno. The quality is top notch. I like the stout contstruction and rock-solid lockup. It handles all my cutting need nicely. The compact size carries well and is less threatening to some of the more gentle folk among us. I wear size large gloves and I am able to get a surprisingly good four finger grip on this knife.

I'm pretty much with deacon on this one. I got a chance to handle the techno several months at knifeworks in Louisiana. I really wanted to like this knife, but it just felt really uncomfortable to me. Minutes after handling the techno I looked at a chaparral ti, and wow, what an amazing knife. I edc large blades like the Millie, but if I was going to carry a smaller knife it would probably be the chaparral.

Okay i held one today. It feels like it is 1/4 inch too short in the handle for my liking. I really like concept of the knife, but to drop 150 on it i want it to be perfect. I did hold a sage 2 and was impressed. It felt like the techno's big brother with the longer handle. Ugh i am torn. I wish the techno was just a little bit longer in the handle and i would be sold. Haven't held a chapparal. What do you guys think of the SAGE 2?

I am 6'5" and have man sized hands and really like the Techno. The only thing I do not care for 100% is the clip. I wish Spyderco used the clip design that Marcin Slysz uses on his knives.

I like it, definitely a cute knife. But the deployment and the ergos aren't great for me ( i uses large gloves ) so i sold it... but really, it is a great conversation piece, at least for me

I kept the Sage2, sold the Techno. If the Techno just had a little bit more length in the handle, I would have kept it. I really like CTS-XHP.

Pic comparison request: Techno, Chaparral, and Sage2. Looking to see them with blades open and closed, and handle thicknesses.

Thanks in advance!
