Temperature Controlled Forge

Well I think all the welding is done other than the legs, but I am waiting on the old propane BBQ frame that I am using as a base to get delivered so I can get them right the first time. I do need to go back and grind some of the more ugly welds clean before painting it, I would have taken pictures but I really didn't do that much work today on it other than finish up my latch/door handle.

I am going to end up having to order my hose and regulator through High Temperature Tools & Refractory. I don't have anything against them, but I always try to buy locally first to support the local merchants. The worst part about having to go this way is the wait combined with the shipping cost. The shipping I can swallow even if it is almost as much as the parts, but having to wait how ever long it takes to get here will leave me a bit antsy:o I guess that while I am waiting for parts I can line it, my plan is 3+ inches of ceramic wool and then a thin coat of refractory cement.

Well I finally got the BBQ frame I was waiting for, so I finished up all my welding, and mounting of the forge. My welds are getting better, but still nothing to brag about, more of a stand back and look at my first welds and then the new ones and go, Gee that aint bad:p

My burner was a tad heavy to be held in place with just the bolts on the tube so I added in a support/stop that will keep me from getting the burner tip in too far.

All that is left to do is get the proper bolts for the hinges, paint it, order my burner hoses next week, and line the forge body. If everything goes well and shipping doesn't take too long I should be getting this thing fired up by the end of April. I am still contemplating adding a little shelf at the front and back openings to be able to block them off with a couple of fire bricks, that or welding up a pair of plugs that I can line and insert when needed.

George,

I bought my regulator from a BBQ Supplier that sells stuff for trailer size BBQ's etc. I would have bought it from High Temp but it was before Wayne(insanity) took over. You might look online in Canada for one that way?
You can run your hoses from the forge back in copper tube. My hose is from a scrapped BBQ.

If anyone disagrees, then say so, but, I'd rather see the burner down. Less risk of it falling and saves space.
The blower isn't likely to spark a fire a d if you turn it on before you open the propane you should't have problems.
Also, I just cut the nipple into the forge off so the burner sits slightly closer, also to save room.

Looking good so far. It's going to be cool seeing your knives with Hamon's and you being able to heat treat quicker.

Well it doesn't take any more room pointed up or down, but I like having that ball valve right there to shut off in an instant if needed. I am a lefty and the height is just right so it would be one smooth motion, I got lucky on that one. The blower will be mounted on the flat where the tank for the BBQ use to be and connected via a corrugated hose.

I searched like crazy trying to find a local and then a Canadian supplier to to buy my hoses and regulator from, but no one had everything I needed and by the time I ordered one piece from here and another for a different supplier the cost with shipping was more than getting everything from High Temp:o
