Terrasaur or Bushfinger?

Hulk2e & Onedog - thank for posting up those pictures - that really helps me put it in perspective the size of these two knives (+ the Recluse) in comparison with the Hiking Buddy that I have.

schmitte - thank you for your insight as well. This thread is turning up some good information.

Onedog - what is your preference in steel thickness for the Terrasaur (it looks like you have a nice variety)?

You're welcome.

I prefer 1/8". I don't hunt much so most of my uses for it are woods related and camp food prep. I find that a 1/8" Terrasaur excels at getting the last of the peanut butter. :D

I think a pic is required. :D

No problem.

I'm pretty sure my 5/32 one could probably hang with it, I like me some peanut butter :D

You definitely need 5/32" if you are eating Laura Scudder or the all natural stuff they sell at Sprouts or Whole Foods. For Jif or Skippy, 1/8" is probably fine.

;)

True. However, my main point was that the extra belly on the Bushfinger makes it a little more difficult to get the stuff that's stuck to the sides and close to the top. ;):D

Fueling the confusion Matt... :D Here's a Bushfinger that I just picked up. 5/32" straight tang. I've owned a couple of each of the 3 models. (Terrasaur, Bushfinger and Recluse) Obviously all 3 are great knives. The Recluse would be my dedicated Whitetail knife but the Bushfinger is my favorite all around choice. That is why I picked this one up. This, however, is an old school handle that is a bit more round and plump. I'm in the minority as I don't like thin, tapered tang handles. I like big, round hand filling handles. Anything else feels too dainty to me. Again I'm the minority. I say start with what YOU like initially and work from there. You're in a great position as you can't go wrong with any of them.

Whoa Dave that is gorgeous!

Well I made my decision this morning. It wasn't an easy one and I want to thank all the folks who had input into this thread. Lot of good information in this thread. There has been some great examples of both of these models pop up on sale thread but I thought I wanted to shark one instead. That was until I went out to DLT to see if Jason's new batch was up a few days ago. Bam - he had a couple Bushfinger's and a couple Terrasuar's in stock but I kept coming back to one knife daily - well maybe like hourly for the last few days. That knife was a tangerine burlap Terrasaur - 1/8" A2 with gorgeous spalting, natural pins and natural and white liners.

Weakness overcame me this morning sitting at a campsite, drinking coffee watching the wildlife wake up. It's inbound.

There is no doubt I still want to get my hands on a Bushfinger down the road. Ultimately I decided to try something a little different - I don't have anything like the Terrasaur in my lineup.

Pictures to come!

Congrats Westy on that Terrasaur... it's a beauty!

Dave, that looks like a grail Fanger. I too like fat handles.

That's awesome Westy. I know the knife you're talking about. It's almost identical to the scandi one I posted with the Tangerine handle. I got that one a week or 2 ago from DLT as well. :D I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with it.

I briefly looked at that one as well Westy. Good choice. I think my first of the choices is going to be a Recluse. I really like that blade shape, and love the Patch that I had. Just need to come across the right one...

Phil (Comprehensivist) has a really nice one listed in the Flea Market.

That's the "right" one if I ever seen it...

Agreed, it is a very nice Recluse. I had just looked at that before making my comment here.

It has all the right specs that I think I'm looking for... 1/8, tapered, I'm thinking I would like a bolster, but unfortunately I'm not a real big fan of the emerald burlap.

I love emerald burlap myself and that's what makes Fiddleback Forge so great, there really is something for everyone, your "right" knife will be along shortly I'm sure.

Most definitely! I'm a fan of several of the other burlaps, emerald just doesn't do it for me. I'll know when I see the right one cause I'll get that little rush and the feeling of, "yes I definitely need that knife!". I have actually really been digging the brown and OD canvas lately.

I was tempted by that emerald Recluse! That is one color of burlap that I would really like to have some day.

Westy,

Have you considered the reugalr Nessmuk model Andy makes? The design is great for bushcrafting, food prep, making fires, processing various game whether big or small and processing fish. It's my favorite model out of all my Fiddleback's where veratility and handle comfort are concerned not to mention that Andy's take on the Nessmuk is just ubersexy. Mine is on the thicker side at 3/16", however with the tappered tang and the awesome edge geometry it performs like a much thinner knife.
