Testing: What I would Like To See

I'm not sure what this would accomplish? Steels are already tested for corrosion, toughness, and edge retention by the esteemed Dr. Larrin Thomas and others. As to testing the knives to destruction, well I already know that I can break any knife I own by doing stupid things to it. Why would we need to formalize doing stupid things with knives when we already know knives can be broken?
Thank you for saving me the typing.

There is always one good option for anyone who 'would like to see' this or that, and that is do it yourself, record it, then share it. If you can do better, or if you really want to know what happens to a $2000 CRK when you use a 14lb sledgehammer to see if it will cut 1" rebar, then lead the way, show us :)

If the idea has legs, then it will get picked up and supported and we might all see more.

IMO , not true ! He's also trying real hard to get laughs and more viewers .

Seriously though , he does compare similar knives and their relative breaking points .

Like the old school Cold Steel Warcraft vs the current GSM model with the same name .

Not afraid to call out GSM either .

He also compared the old CS machetes from SA vs the current same from China .
Those "tests" aren't valid because the can't be quantified and they aren't repeatable. The exact same 10 knives used to do the same activity by the same idiot person might yield 10 different results. They don't prove a thing.

so when ya gonna start the testing and youtube it for us? ya already got a Randall and some other high end dollar knives to see how they do.....

I suggest using the same setup per each knife so we can see how 1 does compared to another.....
The Randall is ruled out. No black out coating leaves it susceptible to all sorts of failures.

One with a black glint free finish, the other one shiny?

OK , except knives can fail in ways and circumstances that could easily cause injuries / death .

I had a Al Mar Pathfinder fracture at the hilt and fly off like a spear . Just chopping at some hardwood saplings . Thankfully nobody in the way .

In a survival type situation , just a failure of your knife to function properly , could contribute to the failure to survive .

If all a knife needs to do is sit for photos , fondling , youtube unboxing , and Barbie doll pimping ...different story .

Testing to the failure point is (or was) commonly done for all kinds of mundane products , just to assure a long service life . Quality assurance by design spec .

Doesn't have to be a safety , life or death matter . 🤷‍♂️

I would like to see a testing program that buys high end knives from premium makers and thoroughly ests them . . .to destruction.

Testing edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness in the usual way through scientifically rigorous standardized methods would come first followed by toughie, even abusive things such as penetration, battening and vice-bending would follow.

I want to see comparison testing of fixed blades from makers such as Chris Reeve and other high end premium makers. I'd like to see comparison testing of folders from Spiderco, Bench made and other makers of quality pocket knives.

In my vision, some non-profit organization, backed by an industry and/or individuals supporting to a crowd funding site to buy these expensive test articles on the open market. Testing could be live-streamed on YouTube.

I am sure hat there is a more sophisticated way to propose this. I am open to suggestions.
Go for it. I would love to see your results.

What you will find out quickly is that a TON of people will snipe at you from the sidelines, saying you should have done this or that.... All the them without skin in the game and without offering to help. I'm speaking from experience here.

But I'll watch your reviews.

Yes, I would anticipate all of that. That is why the suggestion is for an effort larger than just another YouTuber creating "shocking!" content. I would be looking for a more elaborate effort with strong claims to objectivity.

A parallel project might be a uniformly produced series of 'shop tours" of various maker's facilities. The Chric Reeve video is 12 years old. The Buck video is a shameless self promotion, which is OK but could be more informative. The Randall Made video merely shows the display cases without voice over. I would like to see the makers getting it done.

The reality is that this would not be in the best interest of the makers. If it were, they would have done it themselves long ago.

I doubt they'd do it themselves. Most of them are elbows deep in trying to make a living, and if they're lucky, fulfilling orders. A handful go to the time and expense of preparing videos demonstrating the capabilities of their blades.

Problem with this is that the Youtuber would have to have some actual skill at doing those things (most of 'em don't), so they opt for clownshoes nonsense like beating a fixed blade into a metal pole instead. No real skill involved there, and people who are easily entertained will give you a follow and a like, and companies will send you free knives so you can advertise for them.

Also, it doesn't really bode well for a company who sells knives in super steels when literally everything you'd actually need to be able to do in those situations you mentioned could be done with a $120 Becker BK9 or ESEE in good ole 1095. Oops.
Yeah. Pretty much.

The $18 hultafors survived a Joey x
