Texas Camp Knife!

Perhaps I missed it above, but will the 98 have chamfered bolsters like the Northwoods Presidential. That is what I'm seeing in the sketch, can someone confirm?
Thx

The sketch was taken off the GEC site, I'm guessing because there will be some changes from the original design. The suspense is killin' me!!

I am Still hoping for a saw addition...
That length is Begging for a large saw for Camp use, I mean it is a "Camp" knife...

Yes, this one has me excited too! My favorite pattern is a scout knife pattern and its many variations, but very interested in the cattle knife version that's coming out. Can't wait!

I'm sorry I had one of the Remington bullet knives and it was a no go for me. I kept wondering where this knife fits in. Too big and heavy to put in your pocket and I wouldn't trust it for the tougher jobs. The GEC take is even more mind boggling to me. The punch?? Worthless really on a knife like this. Replace that with a saw blade. Remington also had the better idea of a combo bottle opener/flat blade too. Am I really the only one that doesn't flop over when GEC puts out a new knife?????

Given that GEC are one of a very few knife makers made in the America, which seems to me to be one of the foremost properties when purchasing a knife in the Continental US. There are not many manufacturers that have the ability in 2016 to make anyone flop over! GEC seem to be doing a good job themselves so far. I think the camp knife will be another winner, my order going in as soon as possible. Some models are not everyones cup of tea and GEC have issues like any company, but they seem to be very close to the top of the knife making heap, which are making more and more individuals liking the products they produce. One persons opinion.

Rusty1 so true but I don't want to derail this thread other than me saying nope not good for me.

Hi all. I'm just getting back from a quarter long knife hiatus, and GEC debuts a camp knife? Woohoo!!!!

But my woohoo is rather subdued. The size is very close to my Camillus Classic Cartridge Series CCC-7, which is far too big and heavy to actually carry. It's more of a showpiece size and weight. And a can opener instead of a screwdriver? Huh? Who uses a can opener anymore? I love the awl though, and the secondary sheepsfoot is awesome. The bail is great too. I'll buy one for the collection but not too carry. Add a double cut wood saw and I'll use it for sure. Do a run with a heavy duty scale material like canvas micarta, and I'd consider marrying it.

But as it stands, I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed. I had so much hope for an outdoor worthy GEC scout pattern someday. But this isn't it. At a bare minimum to make it great, it needs to be 3 5/8" closed. It needs canvas micarta. Ditch the defunct can opener. But I'll buy one for the collection since I'm a scout pattern collector.

On the can opener front, the prevalence of light pouched trail friendly long(ish) term stable foods are the main reason that those who camp off trail do not "need" a can opener.
They are not going to take up the space and weight by lugging 4 cans of Chef Boyardee raviolis out into the wilderness for a two day.

Those that could use a can opener would be car camping and not have to worry of the weight and bulk of an actual household can opener or actual cans of food.

I would like to think that the utility of cap lifter or a screwdriver (often combined on one tool) would be preferable and Either of those two tools alone would see more usage than a can opener. Be it in a back yard at a fire pit, car camping, hiking, fishing, or any other place where a nice sized utility knife would come into play.

This raises the following question,
Does GEC want to make a "scout patterned" knife or a knife that has the heart, utility, and soul behind what the original "scout knife" embodied?

If they are going to go utilitarian with (comparatively) modern stainless, go all the way and make one "for camp use" not one that seems to look the part...

If you can't tell, my knives are users and I would like to think that they are designed from the get go with the end "User" in mind, not a shelf.

go either way on the saw, which on balance is a good idea, but definitely a space taker leading to a wider cross section. but get the heck rid of the can opener, or at least use a design like the one thumb opening can opener; those at least can be converted to something useful. best? screwdriver/pop topper. more tools, more bang and honest utility for your buck. not that i'm not already drooling no matter what:).
thanks, Neal

If nothing else, traditional patterns were born out of necessity. Marlin spike on a knife (riggers and sailors),
Doctors knife, Lobster knife (thin, gentlemanly) et al.

When was the last time a p-38 was used aside from nostalgic reasons, what about a bottle opener?
I can tell you what, this past week I have used a bottle opener 3 times at least. My manual can opener has seen use but once in the last two years.

you would only be half dissapointed then, there is a bottle opener at the base of the can opener.:D

So then it is twice as useful already!

Is it the tool configuration or the size that makes it a texas camp knife? I recently inherited a camillus camp knife, and I wondered if it fit the bill.
