Texas Camp Knife!

I'm not sure I understand why 440C would be the first pick in Stainless. Why not S30V, one of Sandvik alloys, ATS-34 or 154CM?

Here's the one that provided the final inspiration for me. I had been looking for one for a couple of years, and this one turned up at last year's GEC Rendezvous! We had talked about doing it for 2016, and when I handed this to Bill in the fall, it kicked him into high gear also!
It's in nice condition, with good old-style bone handles.
The shield is killer, but copyrighted.

That Utica is spectacular, Charlie!

For my part (and to get in and out so I don't perpetuate a Forum Knife Lite thread :p), I carry a large stockman, a variety of daddy Barlows, soddies or a Buck 110 in the back pocket/in a sheath, and really only one knife under 3.5" at any given time. A big honkin' camp knife, especially one of GEC's quality and creativeness, would be a welcome addition. Especially if it comes out in April -- I think I would have to buy myself a 40th birthday gift. :D

Will be watching this thread for news about that big camper.

I got an Imperial Kamp King in today that will be getting new covers soon. Its in really great condition and I think it will make a fantastic knife renovation.

Here's another picture for size comparison...

Middle - Camillus #72 Whittler

It's gonna be a hoss of a knife! Can hardly wait :)

Sidehill Gouger: to the best of my knowledge(any one feel free to correct me if i'm wrong), but i believe 440c and 420hc are the only stainless metals GEC uses. 440c is generally more highly regarded, sooooo........thus: please make'em in 440c.;)

Ok, but is there really a technical reason they can't use a different grade of steel? I've used plenty of 440C over the years but it has never been my favorite for a number of reasons.

you'd have to call them,GEC, and ask. couldn't really say what their reasoning is on the subject of steels. good luck!

I was at the Gator Knife Club show in Lakeland, FL today and saw a couple examples of this knife! It is BIG in person! Even bigger than I expected. There were also a couple other patterns with that same buffalo shield. Shame it's copywrited, it's a great shield!

Someone here has a MULE shield on one of their knives. I think that will look pretty cool on it. After all, you might need a mule to carry it. :eagerness:

I for one think it would be cool if one of the cover materials was jigged delrin.

I'm not a fan of jigged delrin, but it would be exciting to see somebody producing it. It has been used pretty extensively by American knife companies over the last forty years or so. I'm surprised that nobody is doing it anymore, or maybe they are and I'm just missing it. Either way, it would sure make this knife even more unique and would pay homage to the scout knives of the last several decades, most of which seem to sport jigged delrin.

GEC has done some jigged acrylic and micarta on their knives.

i think case also does some jigged delrin/acrylic, maybe in their work lines of knives. could be wrong. Neal

You're absolutely right. They call it rough black synthetic or something similar to that.

So, based on the other (forum knife) thread - where GEC has communicated it would not make a scout knife - is this one still a possibility??

I sure hope so - I can't take two let-downs on the same day!!

I am happy to say that this Big Bad Boy is going forward!!
:D
