Texas Camp Knife!

Looks like a fine pattern, Charlie, and I'm glad to see you and GEC making it. It will surely be too large for some, but I can see myself carrying one on a belt sheath or, even better, in the tool pocket of my Carhartts or Dickies. (Dickies are less likely to dump the knife when in the prone position, I discovered!). I often carry a large folder in that pocket along with smaller ones in the usual pockets when poking around the place doing whatever, or when campin', fishin' or crabbin', so I would definitely carry it, but it would look good on the display shelf too! I'll put it next to the Whaler so it doesn't feel self-conscious.

I prefer the large shield, but both drawings look great. Now I've got another reason to look forward to the OKCA Show in April! :D

The knife budget I've set for myself typically precludes me from purchasing customs, SFOs, or even higher-end production knives; maybe as my tastes mature, I'll invest more in knives. Since I'm not part of the target audience for this knife, my opinions about it should be totally disregarded. But that has never stopped me from expressing my opinions! :D

The "tool selection" is very similar to that on a Vic Electrician, one of my favorite knives. The main difference is the proposed clip main instead of the SAK's spear main. But I almost never carry a 4-inch knife, let alone a 4 5/6 incher!! It's a monster!

The one blade I would change or drop is the leather punch. How many people work with horse harness these days? Someone back a few posts suggested a saw blade. I like that idea.

Honestly, Charlie, I think you've got a good design there. I like the secondary sheepsfoot for finer work, whittling, etc.. A punch I can always use, as a scribe, punch, reamer, screw starter. And I like the dual purpose of the can opener/cap lifter, but I do miss a screw driver. As for the shield, I'm just not wild about that diamond. I prefer the other one, the standard Un-X-Ld, or as others have mentioned, the acorn. It's a beast, but I'm signing up today for a gym membership so I can lug it. Really glad to see this!

I like the punch, one of Charlie's HJ's is a pretty regular EDC for me. Here's a thread on the punch topic:

Edit: One of the most useful things I've found for a punch (in our modern everyday world): I put holes in plastic beverage caps so a straw can be inserted, making spills by my kids less likely in the back seat of my car. McDonald's milk bottles are perfect this way, nearly spill proof.

I'm actually not sure of the difference, but my Victorinox Alox knives have an Awl..... I use it for all kinds of hole making. Not sure about this though.

Charlie, I think your camp knife will make a lot of happy campers! :) I see some inspiration from a very collectible old pattern. Very cool! Although I like your diamond shield on prior runs, I like the larger shield best on this Texas-size knife. I'm going to need to check the tensile strength of my suspenders. ;)

Ha Ha - I should include a pair of monster suspenders with each knife!!
:D

The flat/faceted bolsters look like that of the Northwood's Presidential which make me wonder if the frame is a stretched GEC 53/54 pattern? Neat looking knife and it's good to see them continue to bring out new patterns. I like it.

I echo the same. Beautiful but quite large for me. Definitely an amazing purpose specific tool or collector's piece.

I do wish it was 3 5/8's or 3.75" closed to rival the boy scout knives Queen puts out. It would have been perfect at that length for any user.

I love large knives(~4"), but that one is a little too large for me.
I'm sure it will turn out to be a wonderful knife. I hope to see a scaled down version in the future.

Do you only want positive comments? Short version: I'm sure it will be a beautiful well-executed example of the pattern, but it is not something I have any interest in.

I echo you. Sometimes, some things can just get too big....

That said, a big one needs that big brazen shield, Stag need not apply now though;):D

That's a great pattern. I like shield option #1, and a saw in place of the punch would be awesome, if possible.
