The “Can’t leave anything alone” Thread

I’m confused by this comment. What model and which holes?
Over the years, I've had problems with both the hole for the barrel and the lanyard piece. It's not on every knife, but it's come up often enough. A little bit of filing removes the struggle.

Thanks. Spyderco is proud of their close tolerances. It can make reassembling difficult 😣.

Right. I think there's "close tolerances" and then there's scratch up your hardware for no reason.
A little filing doesn't hurt the tolerances or make the knife wonky, but does make fooling with assembly/disassembly much easier.

I guess i'll just run this for a bit

Messing around with these Kizer Microbes. I swapped the scales to get studs with Micarta. I also rounded the outer scale edges. These are remarkable for having very round scale profiles but they still came to an edge transition at the sides. Now they mostly don't. It's a lot easier to see on the G10 scale. I'm carrying that one now.

These are a little tricky for me because they are small, round, and chonky; and I need to make the leverage with long fingers. Thinking about the similarly sized Dragonfly and Lil' Native, it's not just that their shapes provide more purchase but that the clips provide more purchase. The Microbe uses a low-profile pocket clip that sits lower than the standard deep-carry loop-over from Kizer. I haven't tried fitting other stock clips but I did reach out to Kizer to ask about possible replacements.

Spyderco Southard with red shredded CF scale and overtravel stop, MXG clip, Taco bearings.

IWI Tavor SAR 5.56 with light green kryptek hydrodip, Geisselle trigger bow, Shooting Sight trigger pack, Manticore curved recoil pad, left handed conversion, Sig Romeo 3 XDR predator edition green dot, Sig Juliet 4. It used to have a folding charging handle, but I broke it.

Beretta PX4. 40 S&W with Langdon Tactical drop in trigger pack, trigger bar, and hammer spring. Beretta competition solid metal guide rod and Beretta upgraded DLC cam block, low profile decocker only.

Yeah I can't leave Anything alone.

Two of my better examples for this thread in particular. The PM2 and Osborne of Theseus - the original liners are all that's left. I have to say that it's been a lot of fun though. I didn't do it all in one go on either knife, so it was a process over years as I learned more about what I liked/didn't like. Most of the aftermarket pieces on the knives now didn't even exist when I started. I'm carrying both of these a lot now, so I'm taking pics of them all the time.

EDIT TO ADD : M4 steel can make a man do strange things .

Ok
here's a clue

The bottom one in second image .
Sure , it needs some polishing on the sides of the blade ; that 50 grit diamond plate kind of went where no diamond plate has gone before .

Is now :
1.9 mm at the spine
0.009 inch behind the edge .
Polished and stupid sharp edge (until I find time to give the sides another go ) .

The top knife in this second image leaned against the belt sander for a while when I wasn't looking and got quite a bit thinner .
Gotta watch 'em every minute the young Tyros !
Same spine and edge specs .
Must be a new fad with these guys .

For those who are horrified at what you have just seen ; rest assured I still have a third one in factory stock condition .
For gazing at .

PS : the minimultimonoliths (?) may be able to help me in the side polishing (or at least smoothing) .

A BMKT Explorer NF arrived today. It is a production folder designed by a Canadian knifemaker and OEM’d by Bestech.

This was my first time checking out Bestech’s quality and it is up there with Reate.

Obviously I needed to polish up the backspacer and pocket clip to match the satin flats. Haha.

Nothing crazy here, just installed some skiff bearings like I do in most of the knives in my "keeper" collection. I had one of these on my hit list for a while and finally a good deal came up, so it's new to me. I just wanted to make a little appreciation post, because I think these are under appreciated.

Note the detent system, notice anything strange?

Bestech really does an amazing job and is for sure equal to Reate.

I have a few Bestech and Bestech OEM'd pieces that I am keeping, as I am in the process of liquidating alot of my Chinese OEM's pieces. One thing I adore about Bestech is their Magnacut heat treat, they advertise 63-64hrc which has been confirmed by a couple Rockwell testers.

Great job on the clip and spacer, adds some great contrast.

Finally got around to adding some custom grooving to the edges of my Titanium Scaled Kershaw Skyline. I also tried my hand at anodizing the scales. (Yes, I'm missing a scale screw and insert but so far have been unable to find it!)

Part 2 with the Kizer Microbe.

In Part 1, I did a scale swap and a little ergonomic rounding on the scale edges. They had a nice contour in the middle but had crisp edge transitions in a few places. It wasn't egregious but smoothing them up definitely made it more comfortable. The proud body screws still create little hot spots but they are minor enough.

Here, I finally fixed my leverage issue. The combination of my long fingers, the chunky profile, and the close studs with that low-profile clip presented a challenge in actuating the studs. What made it worse was that the low-profile clip was recessed into the scale on just the one side. On other small folders like the Dragonfly and Lil' Native, the clip acts as a crucial finger bar to stabilize it in my hand. So the obvious solution here was to install one of Kizer's standard-size deep-carry clips. Of course, the clip recess was too small to accommodate it. Luckily, the scale contour was such that I could easily sand it out. Now it looks to me like it came that way.

I stacked the old clip for comparison in one of these shots but the placement isn't totally accurate. One of these days, I'll remember to get "before" pics. 😅
