The 2023 Garden, Landscape, and Other Stuff Thread……

Hey LEGION ... is that the same old owl, Laurence? ... Can't tell at distance ... and no spiff apparel, no chapeau .. ?

I have, for over 10 years, been looking to see what one of the plants in my garden in Washington was. I hit all the local nurseries and even the local garden clubs with no success. The bush is the tall one in the corner of the fence:

As the picture shows, it's 12 ft tall (trimmed) and it gets these tight pink flowers (about 1.5" diameter) that absolutely freak out the big black bumblebees we have locally.

So here I am wandering through the local garden center (my current yard is smaller than everything in the above photo) and I finally figure out what the heck it is. It's a hibiscus, and I can't say I've ever seen one that size before. But they have really small versions here for sale, and I'm thinking I just may have to get one and put it in a pot.

About 5 minutes drive from where I'm living now is a series of man made lakes owned by the local fishing club and stocked. They are not public, you have to be a member to fish, but they have a nice path around them and I walk it every now and then.

Germany has different wild berries than the PNW, here's a wild raspberry variation not quite ready to pick.

From April on this year I've been camping here.in Muskoka ... until June 15 ... when friends headed east on vacation and left me in care of this property (home and cat!). Daisy was almost as excited about the cat as I was having indoor plumbing 🐱.

Now, I did not plant, but have watered, weeded, fertilized and thought to share here.
Annuals - geranium, verbena, cali'

Lots of deadfall was handy, and my camp tools ... so I pulled some poles from the woods, de-barked, wrapped&frapped a couple tripods - but also tried Coalcracker recommended fast method, saves cordage- bundle, tie tight and flip any of the three poles. Worked just fine.

Tomatoes, squash, cukes ... far end. Potatoes, beets, beans ... near end. 14 July

Powdery mildew & Japanese beetles are issues this year.

Soil mostly sand, needs lots of watering ,.. yet is 'hard as rock' .. needs amending!

Daisy looks to be a real O’l English Sheepdog. you hard ever see them anymore! It’s always a Labapoodle. though we didn’t have one, I’m old enough to remember the TV show. “Please don’t eat the Daisies“ the lady author had one. A neighbor had one too! Very well tempered dogs, unless your messy with the flock. then watch out!

Hey, RHINOKNIVES ... both of us - Daisy and I ... well we feel awful if you are disappointed to learn that my girl is not one of those treasures, an Old English Sheepdog. Perhaps it is her furcut. I clip her in sections over several days (no kidding) - her size & my age 😁

Now she has that sheepdog posture for sure. And she can scare strangers with her mighty 'bark and lunge' routine..but she's a softy.
Saint Bernard/Standard Poodle cross ... Yup, a Doodle 🐾🐾
