The 640XL Design--Who?

Just to compare this is one of the 124 clip points that were made aprx. 74-75, more likely 75 by customer service upon request (these were factory production knives modified). After about 50 -100, no one knows exactly Chuck said no more. The Godfather has verified the knife.

Doesn't look much like the 640........the 640 clip fits the blade. Longer angle and more slender blade.

The 124 clip is too short on a blade that's too fat. I can see why Chuck said no more.

True.......but a designer had to sit down and envision and draw the exact shape of the blade.......also the shape of the 905 style guard and the filework and the placement of spacers, spacer material, etc.

So, the only way to satisfy your query is to find out which of the 6 guys was holding the pencil at the exact moment that the other 5 proclaimed "THAT'S IT!!!"?

Despite several folks repeating what was printed in the catalog, linked here from a thread titled "Buck-640XL", found using your key to discovering infinite wisdom, er... "good stuff", you still aren't satisfied?

I'm just trying to figure out what question we need to answer specifically so you can be happy and we can move on...

Be of good cheer. My happiness is not in question. I'm very happy and secure and sipping a little red wine in front of the fireplace.

The question (and it has not been answered)was.........Who designed the 640XL?

I'll be satisfied when somebody comes up with the answer, but if it remains unanswered like the 124, so be it.

I thought it an interesting question. If you don't like it, that's ok.

Who designed it? Buck designed it, enough said already. Send your question to CJ Buck yourself attach a link to this thread, then post the answer here in your thread.

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like six guys collaborated until all of them agreed on a final design and signed off on it.
They most likely started with a generic knife design and built upon that. Sounds like it would have been a fun little project for them!

I agree, it does sound like that.
But I'll wait for an official answer from Buck to be sure.
Conclusions by rumor are not going to suffice.

Maybe it was an exercise in teamwork. I guess we could speculate all day, but if you are just going to "wait for an official answer from Buck", then why ask the question to the participants in general of this forum in the first place if you already know that you will just get 2-3 pages of best guesses that just will not suffice.o_O

There's a guy named Hubbard here who moderates the Buck forum and answers such questions. He has many other duties so sometimes it takes a while.

Maybe you should @ tag him in your OP.
You really didn't answer my question though...

""".....why ask the question to the participants in general of this forum in the first place if you already know that you will just get 2-3 pages of best guesses that just will not suffice."""

Because sometimes (actually often) forum members know the answer. If not, someone from Buck will show up to answer it if we're patient. They read here often and Hubbard either works for Buck or is closely associated with Buck.

you realize the 6 employee page in their marketing came from ......buck. its not hersay or rumors.

It's not an answer, either........as I explained above, it doesn't really answer the question, just talks about their input.

I don't know whether I'm more frustrated by the fact that he refuses to accept opinions or even official information; or more entertained by him making an ass of himself. I want to ignore him, but when I do I end up missing the lunacy. Then I unignore him and I can't believe I'm actually still reading his posts! I'm so torn... I think I actually love this guy!!

the only sources that seem to be credible wirh you are Hoyt and Chuck Buck and they were, but they have passed. unless we believe and find a medium to ask them we just have to accept what Mr. Houser and Hubbard will tell us. maybe C.J. if hes willing? so ask them and see what they share and if ya dont mind share with us the good stuff. thank you Sir.

I'll be happy to accept an answer from Houser OR Hubbard. Just haven't seen an answer from anybody yet.

Their input? At a company like Buck, they have designers that work for them. The designs belong to "Buck Knives". Why would they give one designer the credit? Ultimately all of the designs are signed off on by one or two guys at the top on the basis of "Does the design honor (or fit with) the company's image, and vision.

The only one likely to be able to answer your question is someone that worked there and was involved with the design department.
And if it was just one persons design, which is unlikely, you've probably never heard of them anyway.
