The 640XL Design--Who?

Thanks, hengem, I appreciate it. I'm mainly interested in the creative process.

Was the "rendition" they started out with basically the outline of a 124 and they made all the changes? Or was it already altered in shape?

The developmental process for most special projects/LE's start with an idea. That idea then is represented in a illustration or rendition. That render is then scrutinized and revised until the customer is happy. ( in this case the 40 year employees)

Is the creative design credit shared by the six only or did you and the other engineer also contribute ideas to the creative process?

We have the six names and your name.......can we get the other engineer's name?

The 6 were the main influence in design. Sometimes there is an engineering challenge that will change the design slightly, but that is not really considered a contribution to design.

The other engineer Can divulge his name as he sees fit. He lurks here every now an again.

Thanks much, your answer is great. Much as I expected and wanted confirmed.

Your co-worker can message me his name if he so wishes. I keep extensive notes on Buck knives and history and he's one piece of the 640 story, so I'd like to hear from him and add his name to the seven others who participated in creating the design.

Thanks again and congrats on a great knife.

VorpalRain,
So far all the knives have been built by one of our CKS specialist Andy.
Hopefully that helps answer your question.

C Cooper
Don't you need the name of Andy's apprentice too?

JK!

I'm done! I'm glad you got your answer, your patience paid off!

Since this is not Buck knives.com. maybe these ridiculous pursuits shoukd be directed to Buck. That would ease the frustration thst his posts generate.

I heard that it was designed by putting a bunch of parts in a bag, shaking it up, and dumping it out. So it was designed by chance. Don't know his last name.

It sure turned out well, though. Beautiful knife.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to make that helpful response.

:D

this design came out as a nod to 6 of our employees that are over 40 years service Thus the model # 640.
These 6 employees met and came up with what they wanted on this knife. Then our Special Projects Project Engineer (C Cooper) and mechanical engineer took it from concept to blueprints and production processes. It is being built in our special projects area. Andy may or may not do all of the run.

As far as the history of the 124, I do not know. If Joe isn't sure, then we might not ever know for sure.

Jeff

Thanks, Jeff.

Can you address the "rendition" that hengem said was given to the six employees?

Who was responsible for drawing up the "rendition?"

Thanks, Jeff.

I pretty sure that when they got together they chose which platform they wanted to modify and it was the 124. They could have designed a knife from total scratch, but all of them worked out in the shop at that period of time when the 124 was in production

OK, Jeff.......so the "rendition" that hengem said they were given to "doodle" on must have simply been a picture of a 124.

Thanks much for the info.........if anything else comes to mind, please PM me.
