The 640XL Design--Who?

joe houser is busy building knives for the upcoming web blast --i can guarantee 99.99% that he is not going to post anything on this thread for that reason and other obvious reasons...jeff hubbard is busy with warranty and probably wont take the time either--knives are the utmost importance....

The only one likely to be able to answer your question is someone that worked there and was involved with the design department.
And if it was just one persons design, which is unlikely, you've probably never heard of them anyway.

Probably, but when we get the name we'll all have heard of him.

Some of us like to keep track of these things, especially a beautiful design like this one.

Note that we've already established that the 124 designer is unknown because nobody asked the question and kept track of the information.

Just seems like it's an obscure question with no searchable answer designed to waste peoples time and efforts?
The guy/gal may have just worked there for a short time and then moved on to something else, maybe not even knife related. Its a big company with a long history and the design department is not publicly well documented. You have both major and minor players all playing a role. If it was of great interest to enough people, it would be well known by many.

That’s unacceptable. I want the name of the person who designed the 124. Totally unacceptable... I don’t believe for one second that you don’t know who designed the 124! Such an iconic knife needs to have a name on record who actually designed this knife. There is no way you should accept anything less than a definitive answer to who designed the 124! I can’t believe you’re going to concede to this injustice! Who did it??? Someone knows, someone was there, someone asked and knows the answer! How dare we accept anything other than a specific individual’s name?!?!? It’s not fair that we don’t know this! It’s not fair to all Buck fans that this is not known. I demand a congressional investigation! Complacency in this matter will not be accepted! Anything short of a proper name, position, and notarized proclamation is an injustice!

I want answers and I want them now damn it!!

And for the record, anything published by Buck or stated by the Buck historian, or shared 2nd or 3rd hand by descendants of the designer WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AS PROOF! I won’t believe anything you say unless I can be there, in person, while this individual is scratching this idea on a napkin in 1966!

Who did it! Vorpal and I want to know!!!

Thanks, guys.........for your entertaining contributions while we wait for an answer.

:)
My reply was not meant as entertainment.
It just seems to me that you were posing the question in your OP for your own amusement?

Thanks again, Dan. And you are correct. Your reply was more irrelevant speculation than entertaining and creative writing as was the response from MT Pokt.

But that's ok. I'm just monitoring the forum for word from Hubbard, so I appreciate you keeping the thread going with your playful banter.

Don't get discouraged. Answers do come, it's just that they can take a while.

I actually do know who the designer was. ;)

VorpalRain,

I will put this to bed for you. I was the project manager for this knife. the 6 gentlemen that were involved had weekly meeting to decide on details and adjustments. the knife was born of a 124 but was modified to accept the larger guard and chamfer. basically there was a rendition that they would doodle on and then myself and another engineer would update correlating documents and processes to match. I would say it took roughly 3 months to get a final design. two of these gentlemen were actually involved in the production and grinding of the blades. So far all the knives have been built by one of our CKS specialist Andy.
Hopefully that helps answer your question.

Thanks hengem! Be prepared to show a photo ID along with a check stub from Buck along with a business card with your name and title.... lol

I’m actually disappointed that you posted to clear things up. Now someone might feel empowered with the win to repeat this train wreck...

well vr did say that basically only hubbard, houser and cj the big boss are credible sources he'll accept...so i guess if they come along and verify hengem its good.:)

wow how ridiculous this became....but a big thank you to H hengem for taking his very valuable time to answer a question. i own one of these knives and it is a fantastic knife. thanks to all at buck for making it happen. now we just need a regular production version but without the stenciling as vr doesnt like that.:)

Thanks, hengem, I appreciate it. I'm mainly interested in the creative process.

Was the "rendition" they started out with basically the outline of a 124 and they made all the changes? Or was it already altered in shape?

Is the creative design credit shared by the six only or did you and the other engineer also contribute ideas to the creative process?

We have the six names and your name.......can we get the other engineer's name?

I see the 640 as Buck's best fixed blade design, with only a couple of the limited edition Bowies offering competition.

Congrats on completion of a superb project.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

verpil drop it. He don't have the time to answer all of your irrelevant questions. Your OP question has been answered so stop trying to keep your thread at the top of page one of this forum.
LOCK THIS THREAD for the LOVE of GOD!!!!

Employee's designed it, per Joe...

Thanks, Sass......but you see that now, rather than just "employees," we'll know for sure WHICH employees and it sounds like two more names may be added.

Then we'll have all the info.

See how that works? Better, right?
