Your right Cougar. I did not mean to infer that O-1 was cheap because it is a crap steel. I meant it was cheap because of what you stated plus it is readily available, has a proven history, has been around for ever, it certainly does not take a rocket scientist to work it (although McClung would argue it take a rocket scientist to do it right), and it is not one of those steels that has been highly modified to get a certain set of properties.
Simply put O-1 is a very simple steel therefor it has a cheap price on the open market.
