The Orange G10 Kephart is mine (I think) and I have a baby version to match it on order.
Can't wait to finally hold it in my greedy paws! I also plan on reviewing it after some playtime.

I was thinking about designing my own knife for my next blade from John and was tossing around some ideas for a pocket or neck type scandi. I couldn't believe it when I saw JDS1's cutout for roughly the same thing I was thinking of. I pictured a bit less belly with a slightly more acute point, maybe a bit smaller overall, but pretty close to his design. Great work JDS1! Let us know how you like it.

Thanks outdoorsfan. This will be the third knife that John has made for me from a drawing or template...and he's NAILED it everytime. It's really cool having your design take shape.

The design your own process is much harder than I thought though. It is easy to disect someone else's design and production, coming up with what you might change to make something work for you but starting from the ground up to arrive at your own personal piece is really challenging. Just out of curiosity JDS1, how many versions did you develop of that piece before you settled on a "final final" or was it perfect out of the gate?

Tomorrow I`ll be starting on a Knatchet for Rockywolf, a Pocket Scandi for C Bryant, a scandi Friction Folder for busterbones, and a 7" Hudson Bay for trevytrev.

I do a rough pencil sketch first and then start refining the lines by erasing and re-drawing. From there I'll cut out a paper template (it's a lot easier to cut curves than to draw them). After trimming things up to my liking, I'll trace the paper template on to light cardboard or a piece of file folder stock. Once it's in this form, you can refine the curves once more with fine trimming. Then just add the specifics like pin placement and grind details. The heavier stock lets you handle the template like you would the real thing so you can check balance and handling. I usually play with the design over several days to get it right.

7" Hudson Bay with brass pins, contoured walnut handle, and a bit of forge finish left on, for trevytrev.
