The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Hey Nate, what is the best way to get in touch with you to place an order?
Welcome to the subforum.
Orders are placed when there’s a preorder (dedicated thread open for a limited period) or if you manage to snag a knife during one of the Friday sales held either here or on the main exchange.

ETA: note that Friday sales are a recurring thing but that they don’t necessarily occur every Friday. Check/follow the Next Sale thread and the subforum in general to see what’s in the pipeline.

Hey Nathan i was curious as to whether you view the field knife designs as a companion knife that most would use in conjunction with some sort of larger cutting tool in the outdoors or a single blade option for most people going out to hit the bush for lets say hunting/ hiking / decent whether camping type activities

Apologies if the information to my queries are provided somewhere that ive missed, would be very interested to hear your thought process in designing both models.

Have you checked out the thread “A day in the life of a field knife” by forum member and timber cruiser @never.truly.lost ?
How and in conjunction with which other tools you use the FK/FK2 will depend on your environs and what you’re planning to do, but I think he provides a pretty good idea of how it might be used or fit in with other gear. It’s also an excellent and fun read.

Thanks that is a good thread. Honestly i think its the move towards the hdfk looking handle that had me wondering so much because i think i have an association of that handle design with the size of a hdfk and despite knowing that the knife was obviously smaller, even when seeing both knives in the same picture my brain kept telling me hmm this new version looks chunkier than the old one, maybe a bit too big. However in comparing the specs against that of the bk16 it finally clicked into place it still is infact quite small and light.

Nathan,
I just missed the pre order when it was open for the HD Medium Chopper. Any way to open that back up for a limited time?

I'm sorry, that pre-order is now closed. We will make a few extra that will be available in sales some time this year.

I can be reached at carothersknives at gmail dought com

Custom orders are general 5X to 10X a standard pattern. Current delivery time is about three years. Most folks order a standard pattern on our Friday sales, in person at Blade show in Atlanta or from Fort Henry Custom knives.

I view the Field Knife as a companion knife to other tools a person carries in the field or job site. For example, a carpenter will also have a saw, hammer, tape etc but use his knife to deburr or cut any bips off that causing a fit-up issue.

If you're outdoors and are going to need to chop wood, you'd also carry a chopper. I'm outdoors a lot but never need a chopper. For my use a Field Knife is all I'd ever need. YMMV.

I'm outdoors a lot and always need a chopper- different size/weight choppers depending on the work I'm aiming to get done.
I also carry an FK as well for other things, a locking folder and a multitool
When I don't need a chopper, the hdfk comes with, as does the folder and multitool

Email sent! Thank you for the reply.

Nathan, have you in the past or would you consider doing random single blade surprise sales for people that are in the right place at the right time? (And for those of us that stock the forum ;))

I think it could be kind of fun! Just a thought.

I also really enjoy the Friday sales and purchase most of my knives through them.

Thank you for such a great product!

Nathan, why does the antique micarta have to be on a liner? Would linerless antique micarta be a possibility? Why are the liners always black?

I laminate blocks to sheet and process as a sheet. I could do them individually but adding the liner is just as simple.

I use black because I like it. I could (and probably should) use natural some to mix things up. I don't like to use colored G10 and other colored materials aren't as well suited as micarta.
